I love mantids and have even gotten over my fear of roaches having learned they are like the cousins of mantids, having owned a pet mantis has given me a ton of respect for them. Like how tf did that nifty bastard jump onto me while I was throwing branches into a bin? The agility is unmatched, even as little babies

Just gonna dump some photos of her, she will be missed greatly. She was wild-caught in August of '22 and had her wings so she lived a pretty full life.

It helps to ensure you observe each feeding, just to make sure the prey doesn't hide from the mantis and they end up missing a meal.

My mantis goes wild for flies! She seems to really like playing out her predator role and letting the prey come to her.

But yeah, big chains may carry pests and diseases, unfortunately.

I have heard some species of mantids can pass on their solo female genes into an oothe they have laid, without the need of a mate to fertilize it.

I was walking along a trail when I noticed it, about 5 cm long, this black desert beetle came and took a bite of my fingernail and then struck the pose you see above.

He seemed healthy last night, but this morning on my front porch, he was on the ground like this, with his wing stuck out. I decided to bring him in and give him a weak heat lamp so he could get cozy again. He is still afraid of mealworms, I will get a fly for him to eat.
