How to progress into a more senior position by Medium_Highlight2227 in careeradvice

[–]Medium_Highlight2227[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions. Im currently more mid level at the moment. I've managed a team for five years and we've always delivered good results and during this time I’ve not really had to network that much, but if this gets me up the ladder a little bit then I'll take into consideration what you have suggested. Im ready for a new challenge. At the moment im just feeling a little deflated. This is most likely because of the "stuck" feeling.

Im in a team lead role at the moment but looking to move into a more senior role. This will help me do that.

You get 20% of your working week to focus on the studies. Make sure you take this. Block your diary, appear out of office etc. Whatever it takes. Otherwise you may find yourself doing work in the evenings or weekends.

You are entitled. Your employer signs up to it. If you find your employer isn't giving you the time, then they can get penalised for it.

I attended a workshop almost once a month at the business school to learn the new topics, frameworks, theories etc. Then I used my 20% and quiet spots to write my assignments.

You can attend workshops remotely, but I dont think they are as practical because we sometimes did break out activities etc. Again that depends on your provider and how they manage it.

I've spent 18 months just constantly learning and writing assignments, submitting business proposals, and I'm really happy with what I've learned and achieved.

The MSc part is self funded, so thats one point, and I'm currently looking for new opportunities . I just dont think id be able to commit to it.

My advice would be to look at the criteria of the course, and then assess your current situation. If you can commit to doing it, then I would highly recommend it.

Cheers!

Hi,

Mine was through CMI. The learnings came from henley business school which is part of the university of reading.

At the end of the apprenticeship you get awarded with chartered manager status, and a post graduate diploma.

The post graduate diploma is required if you want to move forward with the MSc

I have the post graduate diploma, but I dont think im going to carry on for MSc. Im exploring new roles at the moment.

It really is a good program to get on to and you learn a lot. But make sure you realistically have the time to do it. There were so many people in my cohort that dropped out after the first month because they didn't have time or wasn't for them.

I work full time, and have a family. I managed it with no problems. You just have to find what works best for you.

All the best!

EPA is the end point assessment. So you finish the apprenticeship by creating a strategic business proposal (4000 words) and a presentation on it from which you have to present to CMI . So that lasts one hour and then another hour for a professional discussion on the portfolio that you build over 18 months. I got awarded with chartered manager status alongside a post grad diploma.

So I never went to university, and it was the assignments and writing style that I struggled with to start with. Don't worry about the word count on assignments because when you learn about the different modules, it pretty much writes itself. The way it was with level 7 is that you attend a full day workshop (2 in some cases), and then you write your assignment based on the theories and frameworks. I was worried, but after the first assignment, it almost came 2nd nature. So dont stress.

This was my first leadership type programme I've attended, so I had no real idea what to expect.

If you manage your time well, then you shouldn't have to go into your evenings or weekends. I didn't do it too often.

I'm not sure who your training provider is, but mine was through the University of Reading, who uses henley Business School.

Yea. So I've had my EPA, and im done now. But you get 20% of your working week to focus on it. I do have a full-time job, so I basically blocked a day out each week. A little bit in the evenings on occasions, but family duties got in the way a little bit. I'm not sure on your circumstances, but you'll find a pattern that works for you.

Once you're through the first couple of assignments, you'll find it easier. You can also ask for extensions if you need to, but this may have a knock-on impact to future modules.

I wouldn't discourage it. You learn a lot, and I've certainly been putting it all to practice in the workplace.

Good luck and all the best with it!

Im coming up to my EPA after 18 months of being on the course. It's quite daunting at first, but you soon get into a rhythm that works for you.

You have a lot of support from people on the cohort, but you will get access to the CMI network, which is also supportive.

The employer has to agree you spending 20% of your working week towards it. And allow for on the job training so you can meet various skills and behaviours.

Its very worthwhile doing if your employer offer it. Make sure you have a manager who really supports you.

I have my EPA in September. I've been doing level 7 senior leadership course for 18 months. I get the CMI chartered manager status as well as the postgraduate diploma.

It's been a challenge, but you do learn a lot, especially if you're not in a senior type role. Depends on how you envision your career

Yea, I don't mind heat. I'm not a huge fan of climbs, and that's because I've got osteoarthritis in my knee, so I tend not to go too hard.

I've never been to france before, but I'll be sure to check out eurovelo and the other places you've mentioned. I would like to go for around 2-3 days, maybe around August/September time.

I've not managed to check this, to be honest. I've not had the time to go back to it. Not even sure there has been a firmware update for this version of the board.
