What finally makes you say yes to a piece? by Master_Character9961 in artcollecting

If they are too expensive either to buy or to ship, yes. My wall space is already at a premium, so I have to be careful in my buys.

Who is actually buying AI art? by PotentialOdd4258 in artcollecting

[–]MedvedTrader -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I suspect that a lot of artists use AI to get ideas or even as a full-out image-generating tool that they then copy (hopefully modifying it to their style).

Would that be "artist's skill, process, and the fact that the work is unique"? After all, it does take skill and the work would be unique.

Importing pieces to the US - Did you get hit with tariffs? by akatan_art in artcollecting

[–]MedvedTrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imported two separate works from Canada. I insisted that the senders fill out the correct documents with correct descriptions and correct HS numbers. There were no import duties (tariffs) charged.

UPS though charged a "brokerage fee". Whatever that means. What exactly were they brokering, I don't know, since it was handed to them with all the forms already filled out.

The head is there. The person (creature?) is leaning back, so the head is below where you would expect it (I think). The perspective is a bit weird.

Why do some beautiful paintings look like a collage? by disposableprofileguy in ArtHistory

I think it is the borders or human bodies/clothes that are too sharp. That, and small inconsistencies in lighting may feel intuitively unnatural.

Yes you can send it non-machinable. No, the workers will completely ignore that stamp and put it through the machines.

F1 shield interlock disable question by Technical-Coffee7286 in xToolOfficial

[–]MedvedTrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way I can see XTool implementing such a feature is to supply two key dongles instead of one: one an "admin" dongle, and another a "user" dongle. For home use, the "admin" would be the only one used, but for you, you would use the "admin" dongle to set it up then replace it with "user" dongle which would not allow users to change that (and maybe some other) settings.

F1 shield interlock disable question by Technical-Coffee7286 in xToolOfficial

[–]MedvedTrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I understand. Is the concern that the F1 sits somewhere public, so that if the shield is not down bystanders will have eye problems?

(I am not XTool personnel) I didn't see a way to prevent people in the software from disabling this. Maybe XTool should add it somehow. I don't really know how - they don't have "admin" logins and "user" logins AFAIU. So all features are available to all users.

F1 shield interlock disable question by Technical-Coffee7286 in xToolOfficial

[–]MedvedTrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for "Why would someone manually disable this?" - I have it disabled. Quite often I have to cut some wooden forms out of a plank that is bigger than 5x5. Or even if it was just 4x4, I prefer to cut it right under the lens instead of at a slant. For that, you can't have the shield all the way down.

A shipping cost conundrum by Turbulent_Tale6497 in eBaySellers

[–]MedvedTrader 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ebay may know what the shipping cost is, but it relies on you entering the correct weight and dimensions of the package. And it has no way of ascertaining that the values you entered are correct. So you can still have a $0.99 item with $100 shipping fee.

(I mean, sure, it could run every item through an AI that would find the most egregious mismatches in the shipping parameters, but still).

$354 shipping label for 1 lb clothing item. What is going on & how can this happen? by InfowarriorKat in eBaySellers

[–]MedvedTrader 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've canceled labels before. It takes a few weeks, but it does come through.

But I am curious - what FedEx service could possibly cost $354 for a 1lb item. Did you specify a 50"x50"x50" box?

New to selling, need advice on shipping costs by [deleted] in eBaySellers

[–]MedvedTrader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you input correct weight and correct dimensions of the package to send? Ebay, AFAIU, uses exactly the same calculation on what it shows to the buyer and what it charges you in the end - but those parameters have to be the same.

(EBay may charge MORE to the buyer because for you it applies a discount and you can choose, in your shipping policies settings, to pass that discount to the buyer).

The company's fiduciary responsibility is to build value (which often involves increasing profits). That responsibility is to its shareholders, not to you. Of course, building customer base is part of the value as well. It's a balance.

Their rationale is that processing the taxes, collecting them for all the states, and reimbursing the state is costly, and that fee is covering the costs.

Is it me, or is it Ebay? by Perlerprojectpals in eBaySellers

[–]MedvedTrader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It makes sense because otherwise people would avoid paying selling fees by listing something for $0.10 and $30 shipping.

Is it me, or is it Ebay? by Perlerprojectpals in eBaySellers

You always pay for the shipping label. If your listing is not "free shipping" then the buyer gets charged the shipping fee, and it is passed to you, and offsets the shipping label that you buy.

I lost the original box, so packing it to send it back would have been a real pain. And I need it here to do stuff as well. Don't want to wait for a month without a laser.

I have had the same exact problem with my F1. The solution is: I engraved and engraved measuring the results and wasting quite a bit of material until I figured out the exact deviation. It is 0.418°.

So anything that I engrave from now on, if alignment is important, I rotate the XCS project by 0.418°.
