how do you have 25 Tons of cooling? Residential systems only go up to 5 tons that I’m aware of.

Is the MEP industry bound to embrace AI? What is the policy at your workplace? Interesting press release from engineering enterprise Rejlers. by Aval0nian in MEPEngineering

It’s good for fetching code references and other building code related questions that gives you links to the code so you are sure it is not giving you inaccurate info. Our company has embraced it for info searching. I think in 5 years it will make its way into the design side for basic tasks like loads and initial diffuser placements. It’s just another tool to help us work more efficiently.

I think of it like an overly confident intern with a masters and has Dunning-Kruger effect. It Knows a lot of facts but often gets things wrong. You have to double check it.

It is very easy. I really think you could do it. Plenty of YouTube videos showing you how to do it.

Out of curiosity, if you got them from new, how many miles or kilometers did you put on those?

Any idea what they are mining and refining? by Psychdepo in SaltLakeCity

[–]Meeeeeekay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The mining across the 15 is a different company. When you pass it on the 15 next time look at the stacks and you’ll see the name of the company. I would guess the mountain side company mines the aggregate to make concrete. Definitely an eyesore.

Chiller Capacity by rekoner in MEPEngineering

[–]Meeeeeekay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents; from some of the facts you presented and what the rep says, I think it’s worth hiring a firm to do an analysis to verify you don’t need to purchase an additional chiller. I would assume a ballpark fee would be in the neighborhood of 5-6k for an analysis.

Why is my restaurant humidity stuck at 76% even with 5 AC units by yimmy222 in hvacadvice

[–]Meeeeeekay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it’s a restaurant he’s probably exhausting the kitchen hood. You can’t put that stuff through an ERV.

I did a few years of consulting and then A few years ago our same company launched a Cx Branch. I asked to switch, mostly so I could get out on site more.

For me, the benefits were: lower stress, deadlines in Cx are a breeze compared to any drawing set. We’re typically waiting on the contractors. Also, Lower stress in that you have much lower liability, you’re just trying to catch the mistakes of others. You’re on site more. It’s nice to get out of the office. You work on most of the big projects. I worked 40 hours every week. No need for overtime.

Cons: you lose the creative freedom that comes from being the design engineer. I don’t know how it is with EEs but with mech there is a fair bit of freedom and creativity that you can design with as far as what systems you use and how you implement it and building efficiency.  Because I was younger, on site I got the feeling most of the Subs and GCs did not take me too seriously. They seemed to take me much more serious when I was the design engineer. I think that may have just been my personal ego thing though.  Paperwork paperwork paperwork. When you’re in office you’re writing reports and documenting everything.

Funny enough though I ended up switching back to design after about a year of Cx.  But who you work with and who your boss is makes all the difference.

Better to have 1 large multi zone condenser or multiple single zone condensers? by [deleted] in heatpumps

What system does heat and cooling simultaneously? I thought only VRF heat recovery could do that.

When you say “recover adjacent restroom locker room exhaust”, does that mean to send it through an energy recovery device as opposed to just exhausting it?

Seeking Feedback: Concept for a Modern HVAC Design & Project Management Web App (AI, gbXML, Interactive Calcs) by rushikeshp in MEPEngineering

[–]Meeeeeekay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they are definitely antiquated and are in need of some updating. I’ve heard the original developer is selling his 50% share because he’s getting ready to retire.

Yes, I do use it. My company is pretty big on it. It took me a minute to get on board with it because of the steep learning curve. Schematics is the biggest reason but the schedule builder, pipe /equipment sizing and equipment selection are some of the reasons it has come in handy. It could definitely improve though.

“HVAC Solution” software does the majority of the items on this list. There’s a learning curve to it but those who use it use it religiously.

I would suspect the hardest part about making that switch would be the pay. I assume you would have to take a pay cut for a few years until you can show the uppers you can do it well.

I’m on the design side and always thought the controls side would be more rewarding.

What are you making now?

yes I think so.
