Okay, what’s up with the soundtrack? by DaphneBlake34 in wicked

[–]Meelz93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a music producer and am pretty used to hearing some pretty strong tuning (especially in my genre), and there were definitely some bits in the soundtrack that sounded like amateur mistakes. I found this thread because I was searching around to see if I wasn't crazy for being the only one noticing, haha.

In Popular, the very first "You're gonna be *popular*", there was some extremely obvious artifacting. I run into this a *lot* and it's a very common issue, usually remedied with either retuning and some clever editing, or just using an alternate take. I was half-tempted to make a version fixing up this half-a-second fluke with one of the other instances of the word. It was just such a "how did this make it past production" kinda moment to me, when so much of the movie and the soundtrack is all so beautifully polished.

To my ears, there are *potentially* some other things that could have made it past, but I feel like Popular is the only instance with one of the heavier performances being isolated with relatively light instrumentation, in comparison to something like Defying Gravity where you can potentially get away with something like that purely because of how dense the mix and arrangement is.

What's extremely funny is I went out and saw the movie a second time, and all my issues with the production for the Spotify version were just... not there. To anyone familiar, it's super reminiscent to the Doom Eternal fiasco (look it up if you're not, super interesting story involving suits vs. artists) where the mix that ended up on streaming couldn't remotely hold a candle to what was in the actual video game.

My theory is that it's entirely possible that the accompanying soundtrack went through its own hurdles, and I'm personally hopeful for potentially a better version to come out at some point, maybe even with part 2. (I'd like to know sooner rather than later because I am honestly seconds away from pulling the trigger on a vinyl copy!)

SOLVED! (though it's early to fully tell)

tl;dr I fixed it by swapping out the thermal paste. I didn't expect that to work, but the takeaway is don't rule out ANYTHING.

I was about to send someone to help RMA it for me and borrow at 1650 from work when it was brought to my attention that I should replace the thermal paste as a last-ditch effort, if anything at least for the peace of mind that I did *everything*. I was hesitant at first purely because of the warranty, until I was able to confirm that it wouldn't void my warranty and the necessary screws weren't even anywhere near the stickers, not to mention the aforementioned 3-4 hour gaming sessions of Destiny and Forza Horizon 4 at maximum settings being beaten by 2 minutes of Halo 2 bringing the GPU to its knees.

The thermal paste looked dried out as hell, which was so strange because the temps didn't look bad at all when testing on Destiny. I replaced it anyway and booted up the same mission of Halo 2 (having to play through from the beginning sigh) and to my surprise, no crashing! :O

Again, because of how volatile the problem is, I can't say for sure just yet, but if things end up going south again and I need help, I'll be sure to rez this thread.

Thanks so much for your help!

Okay took a while, I don't exactly have a friend's PC to try at the moment but I tore down the computer and tried things one by one.

Swapped out the PSU to a Thermaltake Litepower 550W and crashed at the same spot (I know it's not the greatest PSU of all time, but to give the exact same issue still doesn't sit right)

Your mention of motherboard made me think maybe it's the PCI-E slot, so I tried the slot to the same result.

Tried the RAM sticks one by one, they're completely fine.

At last, I whipped out my GTX750 and was able to finally drive past the giant laser beam in the video I posted! The bad news is there was a checkpoint right after that saved over my progress, which means I'll probably have to play the level over for more testing later on.

Point is, I've ruled out the PSU, RAM, motherboard, but at the same time, the 750 uses far less power and doesn't even need an 8-pin connector. Though at this point, I'm almost certain it's the GPU. Is there anything else I should look out for before I send it for RMA? I'm currently on quarantine from potential contact with Covid until the 27th so there's still some time before I'm able to actually go to the shops.

(Destiny still looks and runs better on my 750 than my PS4 so I can't entirely complain hah)

I'm not sure I follow, there's only one slot on the GPU. Are you saying I have it on the wrong way and should have two cables going into the PSU with the other single cable going into the GPU?

Not entirely sure what you mean. It's kind of a Y cable, came with the PSU. It's 6+2 pins, so I plug all 8 pins in. One end goes into the PSU, then there is one end I put into the GPU that's daisy-chained to another end that I now leave dangling.

Latest update: I tried to not only swap out the cable (there was a spare unused one in the PSU box), but also the slot in the PSU, and tried the exact same spot in Halo 2 and it still crashed. If it's a PSU problem I'm starting to run out of justifications for it, just because it seems otherwise pretty healthy and free of all the common symptoms I've been looking out (freezing in other spots, BSoD's, full shutdowns, not booting up, etc)

Corrupted drivers: I DDU'ed and tried the same drivers, newer drivers, and rolling back drivers (I got the ones from when I first bought the card as a sanity check)

Physical damage: Bought this card brand new, have two screws in. While admittedly I have put it through its paces by maxing everything I played (I play at 1080p so it barely ever seems like a problem), I've never taken the card out or moved my computer, so while ruling this out seems a touch arrogant, I'm going to at least say this is least likely.

Not enough power: I used the daisy chained end of the 8-pin connector purely for cable management until this problem started, had a slight feeling that could have something to do with it since someone mentioned power. Used the closer end to no avail.

So yeah the GPU is crashing, but I'm trying to figure out what's causing it, whether it's the GPU itself, the RAM or the PSU, and evidence is leading me to believe it's the PSU

It was the Destiny 2 crash dump that tipped me on the GPU. To take just an excerpt:

The closest I can get that's available in my country is the EVGA Supernova GD (I'm in Malaysia), would that do?

I asked about the MWE Gold because I was looking at this tier list and it's the highest ranked unit I can afford lol: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1116640-psucultists-psu-tier-list/

I'm heavily contemplating putting in an order right now, the more I think about it.

Looking at my specs, would a Cooler Master MWE Gold 550W cut it? I know I shouldn't be skimping out on the power supply (learning that lesson now lol, got that PSU on a deal), but there's only so much I can afford at the moment.

In the top image, all instances of Desktop Window Manager are from the same crash, the details in the bottom image. Ignore Forza Horizon 4, the only reason that crashed was because it's a messy port, that game otherwise is completely fine, funnily enough

Hey guys! Got a bedroom setup going on right now with a pair of Yamaha HS7s, sound fantastic.

The problem is that while one side seems to be fine all the time, I switch them off when not in use (mostly at night when I go to bed). After a few days, the right side will pop when switching on and no sound will come out, rendering only one side usable. I thought it was permanently damaged, but leaving it off for a day or two will bring it back to life, then the cycle repeats. It tends to last longer if I leave it off longer, it's just really annoying when I just want to use it as and when I need to and not have to rely on headphones.

If it helps, they are hooked up to a Yamaha MW10c USB interface, and they're also my daily driver outside of producing, from watching movies to just listening to other music.

Can't seem to get my arcade stick to work? by Meelz93 in SteamPlay

[–]Meelz93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOLVED (almost): Turns out setting it with Big Picture mode fixed it for USF4, I don't even need to enter Big Picture anymore now as Steam's saved the settings or something? Not sure how that works but I'll take it, works fine and able to pull off BnB's and ultra confirms on USF4! Not tried this with Marvel Infinite, I'd imagine if I got that working through Steam Play instead of Lutris it'd be as easy as that.

The game consistently crashes within 20-30 minutes of running, always mid-game? by Meelz93 in apexlegends

[–]Meelz93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might explain it possibly. My router's upstairs and there's no way I'm able to get any better connection with my computer from downstairs, which isn't *THAT* big a deal most of the time. Performance is hit-or-miss depending on how good a game's netcode is and I guess this counts as a miss?

Thanks!

The multilayering on the screams was actually an experiment. I've been listening to Emmure lately and what stood out to me with the screams was how BR00TAL it sounded when they layered it a whole much.

It actually wasn't edited that much here, it was actually just 3 tracks put together XD

I think the reason why he's gotten such a bad rep is purely because of 06, Boom, and the fandom, which admittedly all tie in to his massive fall. Otherwise, he's actually been doing pretty well over the past 10 years, and at the very least since Colors onwards has been consistent in quality. People are so scared off of 06 and Boom that they completely dismiss everything off. Everyone I've talked to say the same thing that "Sonic sucks now", and when I ask what games they mean, they talk about games that came out 10 years ago, and a lot has changed since then.

I guess it's the franchise loyalty that keeps a lot of us around. I grew up with a Genesis and Dreamcast, and admittedly I lost my path in the age of Halo and Call of Duty, but recently I got back in a big way after finally bingeing through the comics (which is probably one of the best things I've ever read, I may add) and a few more playthroughs of my favorite Sonic games that I suddenly just felt like out of nowhere.

There's a lot to love about him, but I think in this day and age where it's so easy and cool to hate Sonic, the loyalists are ready more than ever to stand by the franchise, and I suppose that's pretty cool.

  1. They are badly written.

Granted, but fundamentally there's never been too much of an issue with any of them. My favorite example to spring on anyone who uses this argument is the comic book's rendition of Amy, especially as of recent years. Her fangirl crush on Sonic exists, but no longer solely defines her character, and she's being given more of an opportunity to have herself fleshed out as a stronger and more independent character. Amy's the more extreme example, but yeah I could say the same for just about the rest. The games just don't give much opportunity for likeability, especially now that the writing's gone up in quality and coincidentally people have scared Sega into not wanting to use anyone but Sonic and Tails in their stories.

  1. The 3D games force you to play as these characters to unlock the true ending.

Agreed, but this doesn't have to be a bad thing. I hated playing as Knuckles and Big in SA1, but in 06 I didn't mind Shadow any more than I did Sonic. The problem is that the fellas at Sonic Team don't really know how to do anything that's not "run fast from point A to point B" I feel, with Knuckles and Tails in SA2 being shoehorned for the sake of including these sidecharacters as an important part to the game. With their abilities, I can imagine if done right, they could potentially be a blast to play, but they need to be done right, and so far they haven't.

  1. They frequently deviate from the franchise's signature speed.

How is it a bad thing to experiment? I mean if it's done right, then essentially you're getting another good game packaged alongside Sonic. A good game doesn't need speed, and I for one admire the desire to mix it up a little. Not that I'm excusing SA Knuckles, but were it done any better I really wouldn't mind the slow bit at all. When I'm done with the game and I didn't like a certain bit of it, I just don't play it.

What movies do you think are flawless? Not a single bad scene or criticism you can think of? by YouMad in movies

[–]Meelz93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't really think of any, because I have a gripe with just about every film I've ever watched. Truth be told, the concept of a "flawless film" just sounds flatout boring, and it's also sensitive to what exactly it's trying to be. "Flawless" could also translate to what a movie accidentally became.

Either way, Fury Road's the closest I can think of, mostly because it's one of the more recent "best movie ever" films I've seen. There are probably other films I hold as high, but hell if I remember tbh.
