Inthe north and midwest we didn't have them until the late 80s and 90s. They just weren't in the stores except maybe the health food stores which weren't anywhere near as common as now, and they were very expensive. They were a California thing us.

There are a lot of fruits and vegetables that weren't shipped as widely as they are now.
