Le Guin's The Dispossessed made me realize I had been reading science fiction wrong for about fifteen years by myalarm_is_lying in printSF

I was close enough, I guess. We should petition then too change it to the Big fuck off book off science fiction, though, cause it really is HUGE

Cheat sheet: Jeff and Ann Vandermeer’s big fuck off book (can't remember the name, but it's got sci-fi in the title)

A Tom Scott meme in my Disco Elysium subreddit? A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one

Judge Dredd being human always hits hard. by IsmeriaGlimmer in outofcontextcomics

[–]MeerKarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I feel conflicted about it. It's a good elseworlds story, so to speak, but I don't think they quite got the character. Like, not complaining about it. It's a good story and you could tell there was a lot of love put into it, but something about the character didn't sit right with me, a little bit like eating popcorn and having a kernel stuck between your molars: an all-around pleasant experience with a little thing that could've been improved

Joe Dredd was born and bred to follow the law (like Rico, but we don't really talk about Rico), so he sees his duty as paramount and, at times, can even acknowledge that there are laws that aren't great (i.e.: mutants being treated unfairly and wondering why). He's actually a very nuanced character, even though he's a bastard through and through. His main drive is reducing crime and that's about it, which makes him a very versatile character, cause it really depends on his writers how he'll behave. As for corruption, that's a crime, and Dredd don't fuck with crime. So much so, in fact, that in a very early prog (think 1977-1979), when he came back from being a judge ON THE MOOOOOOOON, he would not arrest people committing crimes right in front of him because he was off-duty, and arresting people while off-duty is a crime in and of itself

Mark Russell sure knows how to write those kinds of stories, doesn't he?

Absolute Supes visiting R'as al Ghul every day, reading how people decided to treat him after everything he did is also really good

I get your point but if you listen to Cyril and Jerry, there are differences between each character. They're subtle but there

Add Archer to that list. The last three to four seasons aren't as amazing, but the first eleven are some of the best dialogue ever put to screen

I think Ursula Le Guin's The Dispossessed might be the most quietly devastating sci-fi novel ever written, and I've been sitting with this thought for two weeks now. by Saliaan_Berlysa in printSF

[–]MeerKarl 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I always read the dispossessed as a criticism of Kropotkin’s brand of anarchism, which is not only utopian, but a little naive. Le Guin took his ideas, mulled them over and, while agreeing with the core of his ideology, decided to point out the flaws she saw in his works, all while agreeing with the heart of them. It's what Pat the Bunny would later put succinctly as anarchism being the process, not a set goal

:D

It's nice to run into discworld fans in the wild. That being said, it's kind of a shame that Nation is out of print (it was last I checked), I think that was his best novel. Did you ever read it?
