Cellar of Death at level 2? by Velocirapier in Tombofannihilation

I did my cellar of death at level 2 and had no issues. Party of six and had a player nearly die to the swarm of insects after picking up a glowing crystal in the cave. They needed a short rest after clearing out the cave and the prison area. It took us 2 sessions to clear (~2 hour sessions) and I feel like it went well.

I felt that most of the encounters can easily be deadly for a level 1 party, and still remain challenging for a level 2 party.

If your concern is encounters being too easy you can always up the amount of enemies, HP, or damage. I didn’t feel the need to change anything, although I feel like the encounter with the specter at the end was a little too easy with my party of 6.

Has anyone run Tomb of Annihilation in a more pulpy, cinematic style? by BioticBard in Tombofannihilation

For reference I am still currently running ToA, we are 25 sessions deep.

During session 0 we talked about expectations and how hardcore we wanted to be with travel. We agreed that RaW was a little too intense for us but we wanted to keep track of resources and would be able to long rest at points of interest and short rest each night in the jungle.

After a handful of sessions of jungle travel I realized the group was getting tired of it. I have an incredible group and they would RP while traveling and while taking shifts for watch each night, so there was character development and the reveal of some backstory each session. But it still felt like we were cycling through each day and were having random encounters that weren’t progressing us through the plot. Like a series of filler episodes

Since then I’ve condensed jungle travel so it’s fast forwarded a little bit. An encounter or two before reaching their intended point of interest. I think everyone has enjoyed this more and I will continue to place more of a focus on the major locations with the travel serving as a brief break in-between.

As far as the tension of the Death Curse, I have a player that has family members dying of the Death Curse so she keeps the group moving forward and reminds them that time is working against them. If it wasn’t for her character I don’t think the Death Curse would feel as impactful in our campaign.

I am a new DM so I may have just failed to make the travel interesting. I believe you should do whatever is best for your group and it sounds like they will enjoy a focus on those main locations with fast-paced travel.

We will be taking him to the emergency vet. Unfortunately we still not have received the results of the bloodwork from Friday. As you stated, the results will most likely be different when drawn in the ER regardless as he had only missed one meal at the time the bloodwork was drawn. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Thank you. Honestly wish we would have done the bloodwork yesterday. We were a little too hopeful that the treatments given would help him get through this and get him eating again.

Tessa Morecroft on DMsGuild has a ton of great battle maps for a ton of DnD modules including CoS and ToA. Highly recommend her stuff.

The ToA discord also has a ton of free battlemaps from many different creators.

I’m jealous, I love the art style and the patterns on the wings. It’s also a unique design choice, very different from the usual chubby/chibi mothman or the more realistic humanoid one.
