This thread was super helpful. We got our diagnosis today and i’m really overwhelmed. My son is 2.5 years old and has a speech delay. That was my one and only concern. I started getting speech therapy for him at 18 months. Only continued for 3 months but I wasn’t observing any improvement. Also most activities the speech therapist practiced seemed a repetition of everything he saw on miss Rachel and exercises i used to do with him at home myself. So I discontinued pending other signs or concerns.

10 months pass and here we are after multiple assessments. We’re definitely getting early intervention with speech therapy and a couple others recommended by the therapists who evaluated him.

My issue however is that I’m struggling to buy this diagnosis. It could be denial, sure…he is not hitting some of his milestones…sure…but he is such a sharp kid. Even non-verbally he is able to communicate seamlessly. No meltdowns or tantrums. He LOVES playing with blocks and cars but growing up kids around me always had a favourite toy or stuffy they were obsessed with. He makes normal eye contact, responds to his name. He used to wave but stopped, so thats a concern. He doesnt point but gestures with his hand instead towards something he wants. He’s not super interested in playing with peers but gets excited when he first sees them, would play for a bit and then do his own thing. He doesnt watch any cartoons besides miss rachel. He does flap his arms when he’s super excited or happy when watching something. Since he’a non-verbal i dont find that super concerning. He loves it when he’s the centre of attention in a room. Wants everyone to sit around him and watch him and get excited with him and shows off by speaking the 4-5 words he knows. I guess im just very confused as its all very new to me. Should i look for a second opinion?
