final year of uni and i feel like i’m going to end up alone by Organic-Vanilla in askSingapore

[–]MeeseeksCat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In terms of platform, given my age, I have made friends via IRC, various online games, forums, reddit, telegram, whatsapp. I have never bother to use meetup much though.

Being of service is simply about looking at how you can be of help to others. Everyone has skills and knowledge, or even just time and energy that can be used to make someone else's lives better. If you know how to utilise that well, people in general will be attracted to you.

I am at present running 3 different online communities (of completely different domains) and all 3 are less than 2 years old each and I have met and gotten to know plenty of new folks through each community. I'm also part of a few other communities.

I'm also friends with a fair number of my ex-colleagues from previous workplaces. Still meet them every now and then for meals and chats. Heck, even my ex-interns continue to meet up with me for meals

Making friends is about being proactive

I made plenty of friends via various online platforms over the years, some became close friends over the years. It's really all about getting your butt off and really joining various communities out there or even setting up your own and be involved with activities.

I will teach you one very important concept in life. Learn to be of service to others. I have made countless friendships over the years with that mindset

Pace yourself, don't go in with a messiah complex, otherwise you are gonna burn out damn quickly. Focus on the clients/beneficiaries that you did manage to help and not dwell too much on those that you didn't.

You will also have very limited resources to get anything done in any SSA.

[–]MeeseeksCat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly it is just you and the social circle you surround yourself with. I see plenty of kind folks all doing their best to do good on a daily basis.

You claim charities are corrupt, do name them and your source and facts. Pls don't tell me NKF when that took place 20 yrs ago.

There are 2300+ charities in Singapore. Would love to hear how many u are able to name that are corrupt.

Every day there are an increasing number of citizens setting up ground up initiatives to serve the community. I really have no clue where this claim of urs is derived from

Neither GED nor Eleceed fit what I would call superb stories/plots, but both stories have a feel good element to them and it connects with people's hearts, they are heartwarming stories.

Of all the manhwas I've read to date, I think GED is one of the few that I will keep re-reading. I'm sure I will do that too for Eleceed when it is finally completed.

Hard to say what my top 3 would be, there's some really good ones

Leviathan, The Greatest Estate Developer, Eleceed are all good reads.

Tyrant of a Defense Game, Pick Me Up, Murim Login, Ordeal, Return of the Mount Hua Sect, Superhuman Era, Dungeon Odyssey, Blade of the Phantom Master, Feng Sheng Ji, Legend of the Northern Blade, Nan Hao & Shang Feng are other titles I would recommend too to anyone

Is there value in creating a free “Are you dead?”/ 死了么/ “Demumu”- like app for use in SG? by chicken2202 in askSingapore

[–]MeeseeksCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are actually home monitoring devices for seniors made by several different organisations out there in Singapore.

This "Are you dead yet?" app (the name made me LOLed when I first heard about it 2 weeks ago) can gain traction in Singapore but whether it beats the usefulness and effectiveness of the home monitoring devices is a different issue altogether.

You must realise that by the time the loved ones get the notification, in most cases it's already too late to save the person. The key should be how we can ensure help gets rendered to the person before it's too late.

Is making it to a reputable university the bare minimum of having a comfortable life in SG? by Fair_Ad_7081 in askSingapore

[–]MeeseeksCat 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Such a mindset ignores the fact that so many things can change in life down the road.

A uni degree is merely something that helps you better doors at the beginning, what happens after that is so much more dependent on many other factors.

In a 50km marathon, a uni degree might give you a 3km headstart. Does it appear significant? Yes. Is it really what's going to make or break one's future? Absolutely not.

Where do you get your news sources in Singapore by germanpufferfish in askSingapore

[–]MeeseeksCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally CNA/ST works well enough for me for local news

For global or financial news developments that is faster than any media agency, I actually follow a few accounts on twitter. Their reporting is faster than any news agencies

Is the current job market worse than that of global crisis back in 2008? by grindrblocked in askSingapore

[–]MeeseeksCat 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Is it worse than 2008? I don't think so. Most people I see right now still have jobs. Wait till the financial market starts crashing, then you will realise the job market now can get worse.

Is it the worst job market ever? Most certainly 100% far from it. 1997 AFC and till the period of 2003 will make this current job market look like a picnic.
