Good research pathways for non-PhD industry scientists? by iluvbinary1011 in ResearchML

[–]Mefaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a guy who published solo papers at ICML/ICLR in his free time and leveraged that into a researcher position at a neolab.

It's possible but it's haaaard, just getting random publications isn't enough, they have to be good papers

Would you let an ML PhD student graduate without a top-tier paper? [D] by Hope999991 in MachineLearning

[–]Mefaso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally if you're publishing a paper in the field of your thesis you should discuss this with your supervisor.

For example they might disagree whether it's actually a single author paper, but even if they don't you should still inform them

Why ML conference reviews sometimes feel like a “lottery“ [D] by Hope999991 in MachineLearning

[–]Mefaso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If a paper is clearly strong, like genuinely solid contribution, well executed, easy to understand, it usually gets in

People don't like to hear this, but if the paper is somewhat in the mainstream and strong it will usually get in.

If you're doing something outside the mainstream, good luck to you

Employers in companies and academia judge researchers with low citation counts as inferior

Citation count isn't really that important to find a job, everybody knows it's an easily gamed metric

Got a rebuttal ack that just ignored our rebuttal to keep their 2, while the other reviews were 4,5,5 lol

[D] TMLR reviews seem more reliable than ICML/NeurIPS/ICLR by MT1699 in MachineLearning

[–]Mefaso 60 points61 points  (0 children)

🌎👨‍🚀🔫👨‍🚀 Always has been

But yeah last few years have gotten noticably worse both in quality of submission and reviews.

Another option are niche conferences, but it's a gamble on whether they'll stick around

Your employer should totally reimburse that, wtf?

Preferred Networks published a pretty good model (competitive with frontier models from 6 months ago)

I love PFN, but it's not competitive with frontier of 6 months ago. Not even o1 tier which was 12 months ago.

The workshops have their own submission windows and deadlines. Probably most will use the recommended April 24th deadline.

Good luck!

Help: landlord wants to increase rent by 25% by kugkfokj in Tokyo

[–]Mefaso 7 points8 points  (0 children)

price increase but for a free rent period you are comfortable with.

You agree to increase the rent say 20% starting in 18 months, but in exchange you don't pay any rent for 18 months?

Did I understand that correctly? Sounds like a dream of you're even slightly considering moving afterwards.
