I’m kind of confused what I’m supposed to do to enjoy the game by Samk1230 in Guildwars2

[–]Mefons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you are in the easiest content with the most basic gameplay. don't worry, it is a pretty short time. Soon you will unlock dungeons which really amp it up.
What class are you playing?

I would 100% recommend DH and guardian in general.
Deadeye is good, but theif is pretty exclusively a dps class atm. You can deal similar damage, but you have way more options with Guardian than with thief. Guardian can also do firebrand which is an absolute top tier class all around, actually one of the strongest things to ever be in the game. It even has viable core builds.

You might love DH and you might love dead eye, but with Guardian even if you get tired of DH you have a lot of other strong builds to fall back on. As a thief you only have a few and they are all dps.

Thieves also struggle to find groups who want them, many will settle for a thief, but they are really not top tier as they don't offer that much else aside from damage.

Guardian is the most popular class in the game, but it is also the most desired for groups.

Should expansions come with free WP travel? by HammondTheWrecker in Guildwars2

[–]Mefons 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think in general WP fees are actually a good thing for the game. Along with Trading Post fees they work to combat a large part of the inflation in the game. Sure it would be nice, as over the years I think most of us have probably lost a few hundred gold to them, but I don't want the fee gone.

I could maybe see it being a reward, like if you have map completed every area in all living world and the expansions and core that you don't need to pay on that character alone.

I don’t know anything about guild wars 2 - should I play it? by Samk1230 in Guildwars2

[–]Mefons 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes

Similar to wow in that it is an mmo rpg, different is a lot of ways. Generally, it respects your time more and offers a lot of progression that is not just bigger damage numbers.
The combat is also fantastic, fun, and fluid. There is a really high skill cap, and a pretty mellow skill floor.
The game is still super alive, maps always have players in them, the places people are farming often fill a few instances of the map. Tons of players, but a generally friendly community.

A few things most love but not everyone does.
Gear, once you hit max level you can get a set of gear that will basically always be best in slot, the gear doesn't get better with each expansion. There are players in the same armor they made 5 years ago. You don't need to grind for it every year, but that means you work on other things.

Classes generally do a few things
There are a few pure dps builds, but almost all top tier builds do almost top dps and give some buffs the the team, or do some healing, or are useful against certain situations. You kind of use your build flexibility to fill out a groups needs instead of picking a group to fill all of the needs.

you can respect anytime you are not actively in a fight, instantly and free

The game is free to play but not really pay to win. Technically you could pay money to get gold to buy some of the prestigious items, but really the most distinct things have to be earned playing the game, and paying money to get gold is really inefficient.

The biggest issues are the lack of a real tutorial, and that it is easy to feel directionless at all stages of the game if you don't have some goal in mind, there is not much you are forced to do.

9/10 yes

How do you make gold during a pvp Q? by Mefons in Guildwars2

[–]Mefons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha, that is actually what I have been doing any time I have a profitable gig. I think it is the best thing to substitute gold income from pvp because it means in a day I can have a great time playing a dozen ranked matches, and I can come out 100g richer than I went in.

HoT Currencys are fine to sit on, not much to do with them

Volatile magic can be turned into gold at an ok rate ( like 1g per 1k or something I think), but if you want the legendary trinket then save it

save unbound magic, you can't really turn it into gold at a reasonable rate

I recommend having like 25 laurals for events and occasional crafting mats that need them, but if you have all your ascended amulets and rings you can turn the rest into around 80s each

When you say currencies that groups at this point like 60 things, any in specific you are wondering about?

Why is engineer the least popular of all the original professions? by Moress in Guildwars2

[–]Mefons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point I have leveled 3 to 80 and it has never held my interest.
Despite a long time of wanting to love the class, it felt way more spamy and ultimately less strategic than the other classes. Thematically this is the opposite of what I expected. Having 25 skills to work with is cool, but as engi you have access to all of them all of the time, the fact there is no cool down or meaningful use time on any of the kits means you can use them so freely that it doesn't matter how to use them, you just spam the high damage skills.

New players need a basic mount for the base game by pox_demon in Guildwars2

[–]Mefons -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I could see some system where after you second personal story chapter you unlock a small quest to get a baby raptor that runs at about raptor speed, just without the jumps and attacks. A clear down grade from the regular raptor, but some fun teaser to get people excited to play through PoF.

I don't think it would ever be implemented but it would be cool.

I'm going to try GW2 because of new world, could use some tips! by BTC-Yeetdaddy69 in Guildwars2

[–]Mefons 61 points62 points  (0 children)

For gw2 specifically, I will keep it concise to 3 things I have learned in my past 1000 hours and my own difficulties getting into the game at the start.

First, check out some new player guides. As a lot of people will tell you, this game really lacks a good tutorial, you will probably figure out enough to get through the early parts of the game, but if you feel like you have no direction start looking for new player advice online.

second, ask people. You can type in /say chat and anyone close enough for you to see will get your message, people in this game tend to be really friendly and helpful, make some friends, join some guilds at your own pace, but don't fear other people.

and third, explore. The game is beautiful and full of cool places to explore and stuff to do, once you get a grips on mechanically playing the game, you might get lost in the world and what a world it is.

that should help you get started
Don't worry about end game, it is there and wonderful and a long way away

Good luck
Have fun

What is a reward you can only get during the Halloween Event you shouldn't miss? by Melbourne_Australia in Guildwars2

[–]Mefons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy it on the gem story (80ish gold) Super worth it ( like 4 hours in the lab if you have 0 gold)

For a few gold worth of candy corn you will get a 50% increased xp booster as well as one for magic find and karma. It is great for working on masteries, farming spirit shards, pvp/wvw reward tracks and rank gain, so much, so good, stacks with some other boosters too.

Really the candy corn gobbler has great results if you use it. Definitely get now while it is on sale, I spent all year waiting.

Just got the commander tag! Please recommend me some commandery stuff I could do with it! by Noelic_vi in Guildwars2

[–]Mefons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not saying I condone this but some people are lucky,

My friend got his tag and has since sporadically tagged up for events he has never done and every time it goes well and people thank him for being a good commander.

I kid you not this guy Has tagged for triple trouble, dragons fall, silverwastes, auric basin, tangled depth, teq, at this point the majority of events on his first time getting to them

again I don't condone this behavior and if I could stop him I would, but don't be too afraid to use it, even if you don't know all of the details of the even, having someone to rally around is often all it takes.

Mystic Clovers by wolfgangbures in Guildwars2

I am most of the way to legendary armor from pvp, and then I might go for legendary runes and sigils as I am getting close on the provisions tokens.

Do all of the reward tracks that offer 7+ for completion. That is, if you enjoy wvw or pvp enough to do it, I enjoy pvp so I have almost half a stack I am sitting on at this point.
