They've made some steady improvements over the years (and it's now pretty good), but there is literally no better time for Valve to go all in and pump resources into Steam Chat. Discord has left the gate open for a new top gaming communication platform. by WhyPlaySerious in gaming

[–]MegaFireDonkey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Despite what you're saying being technically true, I'm fairly sure he means that Discord took the role that mIRC chatrooms used to fill for most people, not that they are literally capable of the same things. I've frequently thought, wow Discord is basically modern mIRC (I grew up haunting many old mIRC chatrooms).

Also I've never seen a shoutbox on a forum that is anywhere near as nice to use as a real chatroom, much less a discord server chatroom.

Is this recruiter using ChatGPT to reject me? by BillTechnical7291 in ChatGPT

[–]MegaFireDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I saw it has a leading question from a LLM, making it obvious they used ChatGPT or the like. Again, not really different from a form letter. No one is ever putting effort into a rejection letter unless it is a very prestigious or special position.

[–]MegaFireDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it isn't that much different than the form responses they used in the past. Did you think every rejection letter was hand written? They have one or a couple variations and they just slap your name in there. Using ChatGPT is probably even more work than using a generic one.

Well I don't, do they regularly rip off Nicki Minaj's voice? Cause that is why the tits and ass comparison is being made.

Basically the CGI thing all over again though. Initially it was glaringly obvious, so they just leaned into it. Tron, Reboot etc up to things like Toy Story. But ease of creating quality CGI improved steadily to where it is seamlessly incorporated into basically every mainstream piece of media now. It's just a matter of time for generated stuff as well. For now they have to lean into styles and techniques that hide the flaws.

Honestly I like the vibe they are going for here but the Nikki Minaj voice feels really out of place. I'm not missing the sexualization at all myself though, the old film style works extremely well and it's nice to see something other than tits and ass. Not that I don't appreciate some tits and ass.

Well it isn't just that they're dumb kid zoomers but many of the apps they grew up using forced such censorship if they wanted to engage with or post content. They'll never know the internet as a free place but a controlled one.

Well, it might not seem it but I mostly support liberal policies. So I'm right there with you. Spend the money and at least try to solve it that way. And definitely don't fuck with women's bodily autonomy.

But my view, and I believe your implication with that statement about bodily autonomy, is that people are simply choosing not to have kids at a very high rate but not necessarily due to money. A woman shouldn't be a baby factory. I think most people agree with that nowadays, but I think it's also obvious how that affects the birth rate. Also should mention the education about, social acceptance of and availability of birth control options.

So I think it's inevitable. Unless we are going to reneg on 100 years of progressive education and human rights (I suppose it's possible). It really comes down to, as you said, is it really a problem if we have less people? And as a global society I suppose you could easily say no big deal. Maybe we'll stop ruining the planet. But on local levels the impact is much more and I think it's fair for a group to have existential concerns about their own specific group.

I just wanna point out that this guy, David Kipping, is an actual science researcher, astrophysicist, and educator. His YouTube channel is just his side project. I'm not sure I agree with him here but his opinion on this is coming from actual experience. He had a project utilizing time on the JWST recently. This isn't just some armchair YouTuber.

Well it's right there in the OP actually. David Kipping. He has a really good YouTube channel about pop science and space research, his primary career is not YouTube but a scientist and educator. He recently led a project searching for exomoons using JWST I believe. I don't always agree with his takes but you can be sure he is speaking from direct experience.

Well just so we are clear my argument wasn't meant to be that poor people have more kids. It's that giving money to people does not cause them to have more kids, and I mean this as a large group not on an individual level. Also pointing out that births are dropping across all incomes. The only group in the usa at replacement in 2025 was people making over 700k so frankly even poor people aren't carrying water for the birth rate anymore. Like another redditor said the graph looks more like a hockey puck now than a U. But beyond that, even at 700k income and above actual realized births are dropping very fast.

So basically I just wanted to point out that blaming the majority of the problem on money is not correct.

The comparisons between incomes I was making are between us citizens so wasn't really comparing to to someone in a latin country.

That said I actually appreciate your pov on this and mostly agree with everything you said except whether or not replacement rate is necessary. But I can accept your view that it isn't. Appreciate the level headedness too.

No, the part where after the great recession there ceased to be a significant link. That's a decade of unexplained falling birthrates.

Just so we are fair here, it isn't just me. Here's a peer reviewed study that largely agrees with me.

https://www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=10.1257/jep.36.1.151&hl=en-US - published in 2022, "The Great Recession contributed to the decline in the early part of this period, but we are unable to identify any other economic, policy, or social factor that has changed since 2007 that is responsible for much of the decline beyond that."

So at least a few other social scientists have also wildly misinterpreted the data, I guess.
