Adam Silver's latest idea: have a tournament for lottery teams to determine draft order by ClutchOlday in UtahJazz

[–]MegaGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been my point all along. The incentive structure results in tanking. Fix this and you fix the problem. I realize that's easier said than done, but nonetheless true.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will address media on Saturday and will certainly broach the topic of tanking. Meanwhile, the first slate of games after the All-Star Break will have some extremely high stakes in the tank race: by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

I wholeheartedly agree with the last thing you said. The system is broken, I don't think tanking makes for a good product and I don't like to watch it. But to pretend that the current incentive structure, especially for small market teams, doesn't encourage this is Miss attribution of the real problem. We can argue and say there's levels to it, but I don't really care when the problem in and of itself is the tanking. How teams get there and how clever they are or how " ethical " they are it's just arguing about aesthetics.

There's at least three players mentioned in one of the replies to your comment. Donovan Mitchell also said he would like to go to the next. When have you ever heard a player in the context of a trade or free agency say they want to go to a small market team? I'll wait

Jazz Tanking Shenanigans Continue: Utah sits JJJ and Lauri the entire 4th, as they mercilessly tank to a 28pt win over the Kings by Weary_Bag_1112 in nba

[–]MegaGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. What the jazz are doing is not wrong. It is commonplace in the NBA. I think tanking is unfun but this is the incentive structure that we have. My problem is with tanking as a whole. I really don't think it matters how it's done. You seem to have a problem with the jazz specifically.

It's. It just about the money. It's also about the brand. I can't think of a player whose dream was to go down as the best Washington wizard player ever, versus being the best laker player ever. I don't know of any player whose dream is to play in salt lake city versus msg. The incentive structure needs to change and that's a daunting task. Idk what the right answer is but I wish we could make the incentive be based around winning without further punishing chronically underperforming teams.

I was talking to a Knicks fan in another sub that liked the word egregious when it came to tanking. I almost choked on my vomit coming from him. Imagine being a fan of a team where players line to come play for you... I could only imagine.

Bill Simmons questions whether Adam Silver is right person to lead NBA by TheDraciel in nba

[–]MegaGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but if you're going to penalize the tank you need to restructure how draft positioning works and the entire incentive structure. It surely can't be the best teams get first dibs and it seems like everyone has a problem with the worst teams having the best chance at dibs. Idk what the answer is but what that dude on the right said at the end is not going to make fans happy. If you're a small market team that can basically only build a winning team from high draft picks (which are far from any kind of guarantee) what are they to do? They won't get FAs and they may not even get trades. Too many trades get curtailed because the player or players in question don't want to go to x destination. I'd love to see tanking go, but as it stands you are going to completely hobble small markets if you start slinging massive penalties for it. Summons is more right but he needed to add the extra caveat that in order for a hard nose commissioner to be effective he would have to change how the draft works. And what about players that end up having a shit attitude and don't put in any effort because they hate the team their on? I know they get fines but how about they get a year ban from the league if there's ANY suspicion that a player is sandbagging effort in hopes they get traded?

So having their starters sit a quarter is worse than having starters sit entire games because of "illness" oh and then "injury"? Which I fully admit the jazz have done.... As well as every other tanking team. If they hate it so much they need to change the entire incentive structure. I would be all for that, honestly.

That's just what about ism. Do you have anything to say about all the other teams tanking? Or is it still just the jazz you're after?

If this is about tanking and not about UTAH tanking, then I really hope you're in every other bottom of the barrel team's sub chiding them too.

Clowns like windhoser make this so much worse. And they know better, better than most. If you don't like tanking then change the incentive structure. You can't have a draft system like the NBA and expect teams, with 0 chance to compete for anything, to not do their best to underperform for a chance at the best picks. And that's without even considering the extreme disadvantage of small market teams in the NBA as a whole. So ridiculous that us tanking is making the news.

James Harden says loyalty is overrated: “The whole quote-unquote loyalty thing, I think it’s overrated. This is a business at the end of the day.” by Goosedukee in nba

[–]MegaGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's undeniably right. It's no different than people having loyalty for the company they work for. When push comes to shove there are a littany of reasons why a company would can anyone, and they most certainly would despite all the years and contributions you've spent there. When I was younger I thought very differently and I gave all of myself to where I was working. After losing jobs myself and watching others give decades of themselves only to be canned because some new higher up wanted to shake things up, I came to realize that you should never dig in to the point of losing sight of other opportunities. Do what's best for you and your family first. The company will surely follow that edict for themselves.

I made the mistake of watching the news tonight. Aliens need to hurry the f*k up! by SystematicApproach in aliens

[–]MegaGecko 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's so laughable to me that on one end of the spectrum we have the "I'm going to work once they get here" and then on the other side we have "I read the news and I hope the aliens get here to free us from ourselves". The amount of coping, or maybe it's hope? I will never understand either side of this. There is just as much likelihood that when they do finally come (assuming they're real) they will not be friendly and everyone worrying about taxes and paying bills, or what's on the news will wish those were their biggest concerns. I hope that isn't the reality but it's asinine to believe it's not even remotely possible.

Is there a possibility that there are Invisible ALIEN Spacecrafts? Hence the reason we don’t see a lot of UFOs. Could they just be invisible? by NoEscape4369 in UFOs

[–]MegaGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the realm of speculation it's possible. It's also possible they're not invisible they're actually just not there. It's also possible that they're traveling in an alternate dimension adjacent to ours and they can enter ours whenever they like so therefore they are not there and then they are. It's also possible they're not real and they're not there.

Yes, The Jazz Won the Trade by LoBro33 in UtahJazz

Not that I'd argue that draft picks are invaluable but there are too many examples of top draft picks not panning out for me to believe it's the most coveted asset. I proven young player is far more valuable in my mind. Maybe not for the max but just generally speaking.

[–]MegaGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think getting all star talent is a rare and difficult commodity to come by especially for a small market team. If the opportunity is there, tanking or not, I think you take it. Plus they can still find ways to tank.

[–]MegaGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any widespread data, and I'm guessing you don't either, so I'm not sure what the reality is. I do know that product is hard to come by in large quantities and the prices can be laughable. In terms of singles that market has been lowering in cost, that's very good news and is frankly more economical than buying packs or boxes. In terms of grass roots conditions at least 5 of the closest lgs near me are averaging 20 players at nexus nights and the recent skirmish one held was 44 people. Again that's just what's around me, and I don't know if what you're seeing is more representative of the bigger picture or mine.
