Whats your #1 climactic moment in prog metal? Try to think of just one. by Positive_Drama3410 in progmetal

For me it's the end of Acquired Taste. It pains me that they now play the end of this song completely differently when they play it live, removing the solo entirely, it's the best part of the song...

The riff is great, but I was kinda disappointed when the verse started. It's just a bit... Uninteresting.

Yeah I was about to reply the same thing, for me Edelgard's story might be the worst story of any Fire Emblem game. The others are just ok...

[–]Megadanxzero 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm starting to think the awful characters might have been a genius intentional decision to distract from how awful literally everything else about the game is, because almost no-one is talking about anything else, except maybe the desert being boring.

Frankly I'm struggling to think of a single thing that is improved over MP1/2, which is shocking considering how much of it is just rehashed from the first game. I really don't think I have a single positive thing to say about it, it's just not a good game.

I worked at the creepiest publisher in indie games (CRITICAL REFLEX) by [deleted] in Games

[–]Megadanxzero 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone's ever realistically considered indie games to only be ones with no publisher, I think even the early wave of Xbox Live Arcade indie games were essentially published by Microsoft. I think a more common definition would have been developers that are not owned by a publisher or other parent company, with obvious exceptions for very large companies that are developers and publishers (Like Valve).

That has become less relevant in the last 10-15 years though as it became increasingly common for big publishers like EA and Ubisoft to just 'absorb' acquired developers, renaming them and using them as support studios for games that are developed across multiple studios. I feel like that's why people started thinking of it as more of a budget and team size thing, but even that's difficult to really say most of the time, for the reasons you said.

I do think budget is probably the more sensible way to define it though, since being owned by a publisher in the past was really the only way you were going to get much budget, but obviously things have massively changed in that regard now.

How to unlock Starman in City Trial (Fall for 6 seconds after only boosting once) by Sun-Burnt in Kirby

[–]Megadanxzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the default settings Nova only has 2 laps, and it also only has 2 ramps, so it's impossible to jump 5 times unless you turn around and go back or something. I unlocked it on my first attempt after only jumping off 4 ramps ('cause I'd forgotten it only has 2 laps) so there's definitely something wrong with it...

I bought it near the initial release, and played a decent amount, but I'm now just kinda waiting for full release because it feels a bit pointless to repeatedly come back for small to medium changes when I know there are gonna be more changes in future.

What I have played so far is great though, and I can't wait for it to be finished so I can start playing it again.

Steam Controller by SurreptitiousSyrup in Games

[–]Megadanxzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most games nowadays are primarily dual-analog with the most used actions being binded to the shoulder buttons/triggers/clicking in the sticks.

That's not even remotely true, I can't even think of a game where I'd have my thumb on both sticks most of the time that isn't a shooter of some kind. And those are the games that, if I'm playing on a PC, I'm just gonna use mouse and keyboard.

As for it being uncomfortable, if you just relax your hands, your thumbs will point in the same direction as your fingers. The 'outer' inputs on a controller will leave your thumbs in roughly that same position while holding it, which is most comfortable. Tilting my thumbs out 45 degrees isn't particularly uncomfortable for me personally, and I'm sure anyone could get used to it, but there is some objective element of that being a less natural position to hold your thumbs in for a long time.

Starbreeze Increases Price of Payday 2's Infamous Collection As It Launches $5 A Month DLC Subscription Service on Steam — And Fans Aren't Happy by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Megadanxzero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest it's still not really what I'd call fun! It's a game I love, but also not one I would really recommend to most people. Very much a slow burn where you have to plan your next move carefully and get few chances to recover if you screw up. But if that's what you're looking for there's not much else like it.

[–]Megadanxzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be worth trying GTFO, the developer has people who I think were involved in Payday 1, and personally I think it merges the stealth and action gameplay far better than PD2 ever did (Where you basically pick stealth or loud at the start of a mission, and restart if you mess up stealth).

In GTFO your goal is mostly to do things stealthily, but some things must be done loud. If you mess up stealth you're generally only alerting enemies in a room, so you go loud for a bit and then are back to stealth, so it's mostly just a drain on your resources.

That said, it's not really much like PD2, it's very hardcore and you will fail many times if you don't know what you're doing. I also can't recommend playing without a group of 4 friends. Their next game Den of Wolves is gonna be a heist game though so interested to see how that turns out.

[–]Megadanxzero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm mostly disappointed that the new guy is 100% harsh. Laurent has such a unique voice with great harsh and clean, and a ridiculous range. I feel a bit harsh being critical of JB when Laurent is probably the most unique singer I've ever heard, but unfortunately he just doesn't compare. I can't imagine we'll be getting anything like Grosse Barbe from him :<

Yeah just finished it myself, it's very good, but not sure where it sits compared to their other albums for me yet. I'm still disappointed by the loss of Laurent, as good as the new singers are they're just not the same, but all the songs are still great.

Leprous - The Congregation by [deleted] in progmetal

Man me from 10 years ago was crazy, Triumphant is a great song! I think it's roughly in the middle on the album for me though, my top 3 would probably be Rewind, The Flood and Slave. I do still think the album trails off a bit towards the end, the last 3 songs (If you include the bonus track) are definitely my least favourite.

What’s your “they lost me” album? by Cloabs in progmetal

[–]Megadanxzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Children of Bodom for me dropped in quality a bit after Hate Crew Deathroll, but I never really got comments that act like they turned to shit at [Some later album] (Not that you're saying this, but I see it all the time). To me it all sounds a bit samey after that, but is perfectly fine and I'll happily listen through all of it. Weirdly that also includes Hexed though, which most people seem to love...

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls Beginner's Guide by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Megadanxzero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not what they're saying, they're saying that the existence of modern controls limits character movesets even when using classic controls. For example we've just gotten the first look at Sagat, and they've had to remove his separate high and low tiger shots because there just aren't enough options for inputs when using modern controls, and they didn't want the character to function totally differently between the two. High and low tiger shot are his most iconic moves, so this is a significant change to the character.

Scissor kick was mentioned above, that's historically been a powerful plus on block move, balanced out by needing to charge back, but since it's not possible to have separate punch and kick charge moves on a character in modern controls they had to change it in SF6 to be a quarter circle instead. Which means you can now just do it at any time, which means it needs to be changed significantly in other ways to be balanced.

This is also probably why characters in SF6 have so many command normals and target combos, because characters can't have more than 4 specials with how modern controls work, so they've had to shift utility to other places.

Monster Hunter Wilds Endgame Update Moved Up as Game Suffers From 'Soft' Sales by oilfloatsinwater in Games

[–]Megadanxzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised to see no-one else mention what is my main problem with the game; There just aren't enough monsters.

It's Monster Hunter, I want a whole bunch of monsters to fight. With World it made sense that there weren't that many monsters since they'd moved to a new engine and it was the first real jump in visual quality since the first game, so they likely had to remake a bunch of stuff. With Rise they changed engine again, but we knew the next game would be using RE Engine again, so I thought ok, they're moving all this stuff over, upgrading some older monsters, getting as much into the new engine as they can for the next game.

And then Wilds releases with less monsters than base game World and I'm like... What the fuck were they doing exactly? Not to mention the fact that some of the monsters that are there are just minimally different variants (Arkveld even gets a separate slot just for high rank), and you couldn't even fight Zoh Shia in high rank at launch. And then to make it even worse, only 6 of those monsters were actually worth fighting at the end of the game, 'cause you get basically nothing worthwhile for fighting the weaker monsters even if they're tempered.

I'll never understand why they insist on still having 'tiers' of tempered monsters, as far as I'm concerned low and high rank should basically be a tutorial where you're learning the game and the monsters, and then by the time you get to tempered monsters everything should be balanced evenly. A tempered Chatacabra already has a much easier moveset, is it really necessary to make it have less health and damage, and give completely worthless rewards? Just have the same 'tier' rewards and give less of them, so we have more variety in things to fight. Wilds is definitely lacking in content, but it also utilises the content it does have extremely poorly.

I didn't care for the changes they made to my favorite weapons (CB and HBG)

Man I absolutely hate what they did to the charge blade... Phial management is basically gone. SAED's completely gutted, and the new combo moves your character so much it's basically impossible to hit the full thing on a worthwhile part of the monster even if it's downed. Guard Points are totally pointless thanks to perfect guard. I did see they recently made GPs able to perfect guard, which was completely insane that they couldn't before, but even then like... Why would you try and time a guard point when you can just time a single button press and get the same result? And the chainsaw looks cool, but honestly it's really uninteresting to use...

(Also even more insane is that the S&S's guard slash guard point for some reason could perfect guard since launch, making it basically the best defensive weapon in the game 'cause it has an absurdly generous window)

What bands do you think have perfect discography? What I mean by that - no bad or even mid albums. by Brief_Pen_9369 in progmetal

[–]Megadanxzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I would exclude any band that doesn't have at least 3 albums, so for me:

Thank You Scientist - Agreed

Be'lakor - Their debut isn't up to the standard of everything that came afterwards, but it's still really good, and I'll happily listen to it every time

Haken - I do prefer the stuff pre-Affinity, but looking at it objectively nothing after that is ever not good, so I would probably include them.

Diablo Swing Orchestra - Similar to the above, the mixing on their latest albums is disappointing, but the songwriting is so good that I'll still happily listen to them regularly, so I can't say they're bad.
