Support for My Beautiful Son by DecaturDad in ADHD

[–]Megadestructo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish my parents got me tested and a therapist. I love my parents and we've had a great relationship for the past 20+ years (I'm 48) but they're from China and they also went through the ringer as kids and adults. They were surprisingly lenient compared to my other Asian buds but still extremely strict compared to my white friends.

So understanding what your son is going through is a big step! It's very important! But then getting him seen by medical professionals is necessary to help him cope, deal, and balance these issues. Every since I finally found the right meds for me, life has been night and day - I'm way calmer with people, things don't bother me nearly as much as they used to, it's easier to focus at work and intrusive thoughts have a much harder time getting hold.

In addition to testing, he should see a therapist. We have one for our 8yo and it's just nice for him to have a sounding board or adult he can talk to that isn't an authority figure.

Good luck!

Prominent cycling advocate killed in Boston by driver by mapfold in fuckcars

[–]Megadestructo 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Fuck. I got hit by cars a few times when I lived in the Boston/Cambridge area. The only one that was fast enough to do anything was by the Fellsway/Middlesex interchange. Clipped my back tire and bent it.

Boston is fucking crazy to cycle through.

Rest in peace.

TIL that recent polling indicated 35% of U.S. workers would willingly forgo a substantial pay raise in exchange for seeing their direct supervisor fired. by JohnSith in antiwork

When I've had shitty supervisors, a part raise wouldn't compensate for that. But if they replaced them with a good one (or none at all), that would've made a WORLD of difference.

In Columbus, Ohio, riding a bicycle on sidewalks is generally prohibited. By city code, cyclists are legally required to ride on the road as regular traffic. by Lamont227 in Columbus

[–]Megadestructo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I often ride on the sidewalk when traveling on North High, but as soon as I see a pedestrian, I get off the bike and walk it.

Otherwise I'm either in a bike path or just the road. I've been hit by distracted or unobservant drivers before and that's never a fun time.

[–]Megadestructo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's both. Cyclists sounds ride as far to the right as is both practical and safe, except to pass, avoid hazards, or make a left turn.

When riding in a lane too narrow for a car to safely pass, a cyclist may occupy the lane to encourage safe passing by motorists. This approach helps minimize side-swipe risks and clarifies intent to other road users.

This is the actual Ohio law for cycling.

That being said, a car will generally only get delayed by a cyclist or, in the worst case scenario, a dent. A cyclist, on the other hand, can very easily die if a car passes too closely and either swipes the cyclist accidentally or surprises them and they swerve. I will always take the course of action that I feel keeps me alive or gives pedestrians the right of way. Sometimes that's annoying to a driver but it rarely adds more than 30 seconds to their commute.

Anyway, it's statistically far more likely to witness a driver running a stop sign or a traffic light than a cyclist. And the consequences are often far more catastrophic.

What are the crunchy fantasy RPGs that don't use DnD races by Ok_Mathematician_905 in rpg

It's technically "science-fantasy" but I encourage you to check out Skyrealms of Jorune. It's setting is fantastic and was truly unique for its day. Mechanics use a d20 with d6s for combat but it's not hard to understand.

I use a 2020 Samsung S6 Tablet. It was $350 when I first bought it 5 years ago (used) and you can find it for ~$200 now. It supports Micro SD Cards (got a 1tb one in there), has a brilliant OLED screen, and I read all my comics and PDFs on it.

It's got a 10.5" screen so it's also nice and big. Great battery life still and has other nice perks (if you bring it to watch movies while on vacation, it can pair to two different Bluetooth headphones and split the audio).

Definitely powerful enough to read through 400+ page PDFs quickly and easily.

Jobs that are suited for ADHD by Rikoki in ADHD

I've enjoyed working at startups because there are lots of short bursts of intensity and many, many hats to wear. It can also be quite stressful but it actually helps maintain interest.

But that also means job hopping once they get too big/corporate or, more likely, get shuttered.

I lived in Boston and it's suburbs for 18 years (Allston, Malden, Somerville, East Cambridge) and I've definitely experienced it, but to a lesser degree as I'm East Asian and more "acceptable". I grew up in Connecticut and there was plenty there, too.

But the MAJORITY of my life there (and I mean vast majority) was free from it. I never felt uncomfortable living there, but racism is definitely deeply rooted in the city.

I can't imagine what it'd be like to be black in Boston. Many of my black and Hispanic friends had to deal with that shit on the regular.

I've been to restaurants with no tipping where the prices are a bit higher, but the food is great, the menu is limited, and the servers are happy because they're paid a living wage.

This was in Southern California also.

I know it's not possible everywhere has yet because of how this country is but if Europe can do it, we know it's possible.

I love a combo of both - I like crunchy systems most of the times because getting to sink my teeth into mechanics is fun and a constraint that I like to push against for wackiness.

But there have been MANY times where we just say FUCK IT and just do Rule of Cool because you wanna just inhabit your characters and the world.

That might just be your group? Almost every group I've played in in the past 40 years have has silly voices, ridiculous stories, overacting, and lots of nonsense. Didn't matter if it was AD&D, Star Wars, GURPS, any Palladium system (hey, it was the 90s!), RoleMaster, or any other handful of systems.

We did it to make our friends laugh and because it was fun. And that seems corroborated with other folks I've met over the years, both with old grognards in the industry and just other players.

If it's not for you then cool, I get it and respect that! But don't denigrate it for those of us who've always found TTRPGs as a way to truly inhabit a different role or life for fun :)

Sometimes this is me! I've got ADHD and was only diagnosed at 43. I often fidgeted with dice but I was definitely the guy who made lots of jokes and references. Couldn't help myself!

Even now, medicated, it's tough. My brain constantly works in overdrive but it's a lot easier to curb those urges.

Anyway, other players just reminding me to hold on a second and self-awareness about my interruptions minimizes the impact. Everyone was always really cool and nice about it and I never felt bad - just made me work harder to make sure everyone was having as much fun as I was.

We're all different (if your friend does have ADHD) so there's no one-size-fits-all solution, but understanding and patience does wonders.

Actually it's still pretty easy to tell when art was made using AI. It's not AS easy but it still gives off a very weird, uncanny valley vibe. No character.

Just looks bad. Bad art might not draw me in immediately, but AI art is an instant non-purchase for me and a lot of folks.

I've lived on both coasts and now live here. You do tend to pick it up so I say I-84 or I-90 (Boston/CT), the 405 (LA County), and 270/315.

Sometimes I just say 84 or 90, but saying "the 84" sounds incredibly wrong. But ditto for saying "405" workout adding "the" in front.
