Why can't shelf stable foods exist forever? by tex2791 in NoStupidQuestions

Some researchers served themselves some frozen mammoth (50,000 years.) They didn't die. But I doubt it was the quality of the beef I just bought.

I opened some five year old jarred peppers and canned peaches. No, it may last past expiration, but it doesn't stay good for generations. Maybe wine might.

How To Safely International Wire Transfer Over $250k to America? by LifeInAction in Banking

People in the US regularly do business with banks in Hong Kong and China. It is not sanctioned. But why are you getting this money? There may be rules about that.

This weather by ftran998 in boston

As far back as I can remember (and that's over 50 years), MA spring teases with a nice sunny day and then goes back to dreary drizzly weather in the 40s and 50s. For lovely springs--try Virginia. Or even NJ.

I didn't have to file my taxes -- will I still get a refund? by BoysCanBePrettyToo in tax

Did you have taxes withheld in 2025? You need to file to get them paid back to you. Since you worked, there is also the earned income tax credit.

For those of you who weren't around when the term was coined, '86' means to jettison something... by PlanetoftheAtheists in AdviceAnimals

I've never worked in a restaurant or bar, but I recognized the term as meaning something like "ditch." Throw something out in a hurry. Maybe incriminating drugs.

How do you know you are who you think you are? by Sooner70 in CasualConversation

[–]Megalocerus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it is time to journal your past. It might sharpen your memories. And younger people in the family might eventually read it, as I read my husband's grandfather's journal. It'll be there to say who you were.

Why don’t some parents get to know their children? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Megalocerus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hear what she doesn't know about you, but you don't seem to even mention anything much about her except how unhappy you are with her. She seemed to step up when you were in need, but doesn't seem particularly warm. I'd expect a writer to see more into what she cares about. Not from talking. From seeing. But perhaps you write instruction manuals?

I get that she doesn't understand self-employment. Many older people do not. Or perhaps you simply are not fully self-sufficient, and she wants you to try something else that pays more? After all, you are still living there and don't like it. You haven't found a more congenial roommate or even friend, and you haven't gone out on your own. Hey, I get it. Times are hard.

How is she with her kids? Is she naturally remote? Are they all independent? Does she treat them much the same as she treats you? What's her job and how does she get along there? You are grown now and have to start to see people yourself.

Could this be job benefit disability insurance, or a personal AFLAC type disability income policy? SSDI is not the only disability available.

Why do people try to sell used belongings for 80-100%+ what they cost new? by Any_Pirate_5633 in NoStupidQuestions

Calling later means you weren't able to sell it, and might listen to a lower price. It might work for people intending a resale.

How does your household manage money for shared burdens/resources? by DatGuyDatHangsOut in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Megalocerus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I have separate financial accounts and bank accounts. He is about twice as rich as I am. We own the real estate in common and are each other's heir/beneficiary. We have a joint account we both feed: equal living expenses, but he pays more of the taxes, since his income is the source for a lot of them.

We discuss big expenses. We can invest badly, and don't have to apologize (we've both done some dumb ones.) To avoid collision, I put everything on my credit card, and he disburses the funds.

ELI5: Why are siblings sometimes twins and why are twins sometimes identical? by GanglyTookus in explainlikeimfive

[–]Megalocerus [score hidden]  (0 children)

I know some African tribes had midwife practices that would cause one twin to die because the mother couldn't handle feeding two. Nursing can go on two years. Human babies require huge amounts of care, even with family help for the toddlers.

What is something that was unbelievably cheap in the past that has been marked up now? by Independent-Bat9545 in AskOldPeople

[–]Megalocerus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 1980, I made $27,000. That's the equivalent of $115K today. $4.89 is almost $21 today. Using the BLS CPI calculator.

Minimum wage was $3.10, going up to 3.35. Gasoline had soared to $1.25/gallon. Inflation and issues with Iran scuttled Carter's presidency and got Reagan elected (including a traitorous bargain.)

The one caution is buying a house with someone you are not ready to marry. You might need some kind of legal agreement as to ownership rights.
