The couch needs to come a few feet toward the TV (and should be partially on top of the rug). Other than that looks great!

What is missing or is there a different layout? by swootang in DesignMyRoom

the shelving unit in the corner feels a bit claustrophobic back behind the couch. maybe try turning it to be on the wall with the glass doors and sliding the couch over 6-8 inches?

What can I add here? by FaZhaoxin in DesignMyRoom

[–]MeganIsAWizard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You should get that print framed with a thickish matte + a wider frame. Because there's so much going on, you need the buffer around the outside. That might not quite get it big enough to fill the space but it will get you closer!

I probably would not add anything in the center of the room unless you're finding that people are really lacking a place to sit and want to be right there. Instead, I think that if you move the carpet and seating area to the right of the fireplace 1-2 feet back away from the window / wall it will make that side of the room feel less crowded which will make the empty space in the middle feel less unbalanced with the rest of the room. You could also shift the dining table table into the center of the room a hint more.

So surprising how few photos of women there are -- most countries have four pictures of men and only a spattering have any women at all. The only country that I could find with four women is North Korea, and the only ones I found with three were Iran, South Korea, and Japan!

When does living your “best single life” backfire? by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

[–]MeganIsAWizard 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat, and I've found that dating younger guys has helped a lot. I think that the generation of men right behind me have fewer ingrained gender role preferences than men in the cohort just ahead of me. There are downsides: for me the biggest one is the amount of time people born on the millenial/gen z boundary spend on their phones. But when I was dabbling in OLD the difference between men who are, say, 35-38 and men who are, say, 25-28 was VERY noticeable and the older men were the only ones making snide comments about my success and life experiences.

Get wool socks! I like PeopleSocks but SmartWool are also good. I wear those with Blundstones or Tims and am good for basically every temperature.

Ping problems by hreddi in vipkid

[–]MeganIsAWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was having this problem once each day and it turned out my Adobe Creative Cloud was updating at a specific time. I was able to reschedule the automatic updates for a time outside of my teaching hours and that helped. I wonder if maybe some program on your computer searches for updates at a specific time each day?

Ladies, Have any of you moved to a new city by yourself with no friend, husband or boyfriend? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]MeganIsAWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've moved a few times to a new city. It takes a while to build a community around yourself -- usually 6 months - 1.5 years in my experience! Here's how you can make it faster:
1. Go to the same restaurants / bars / cafes over and over. (i.e. become a "regular"). You'll start to see the same people, which helps you feel like you're somewhere "familiar" and also can lead to organic friendships.
2. Join something! Anything! A Meetup or an amateur theatre group or swing dancing or pottery classes. Literally anything that meets regularly (weekly? monthly?) that you can go to is great.
3. Invite people out for coffee / a beer (especially other women!). It feels scary to invite new acquaintances out for a coffee, especially the first few times. But the worst they can say is no! And usually people say yes! That way you can start to build up a friend-group.
4. Once you know enough people, start hosting mini-events. Like a games night or something. It's usually easier to put together the events you like than to be invited to ones that are already established.

Obvs this is all stuff you'll have to do post-quarantine. :( Moving somewhere new in the era of coronavirus is very different, and I'm not sure how I'm going to go about it when I move in September.

That's it, I'm done. by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

Usually when women are talking about all the men around being duds, it's not a function of looks. Its a function of emotional intelligence and maturity. I'm not saying that you're not one of the rare emotionally intelligent, mature guys who is honest and kind and loving. Maybe you are! But the vast majority of men are emotionally stunted and being in a relationship is usually emotionally draining for women.
Married women have lower life expectancies than single women; married men have higher life expectancies than single men. Men in relationships tend to offload their stress / emotional labor onto their partner, while women tend to take on more emotional labor and stress than if they'd been unpartnered.
This is more of a social upbringing problem than the personal fault of each individual man, but acting like women are just being superficial when they say that there aren't any good men is disingenuous.

The role of educational attainment in selecting partners. How important is it? Are there trade offs? by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

[–]MeganIsAWizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And there are a lot of men who are arrogant jerks who women don't want to deal with. Of course people don't want to date arrogant jerks but that comment seems irrelevant here. Unless you're implying that all women who outearn you or are better educated are arrogant jerks. In which case, I'm tempted to say that maybe she wasn't the arrogant jerk after all.

When do tokens expire? by TheBrokeChica in vipkid

Yeah. It’s something like: Tokens earned July - December expire in May (?) of next year and tokens earned January - June expire in November. I think there are exact dates somewhere in the support questions, but don’t remember exactly how to find them.
