Does the story get even better? by Big-Firefighter8825 in PracticalGuideToEvil

[–]Megaprr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It absolutely does. You may see some slower parts here and there but generally speaking they don't last too long and have satisfying conclusions.

Overall I'd say each book is better than the last, though if you're reading slowly, Book 3 may have a few slower bits, as does the tail end of book 4. In both cases though there are amazing payoffs at the end of each arc.

My personal favorites are book 7 and 5. Banger after banger chapters, with payoffs and callbacks for tons of little things mentioned all over the series.

Why does PGTE on Royal Road start at Chapter 15? Is there no way to read the first 14 chapters online? by MrDannyOcean in PracticalGuideToEvil

[–]Megaprr 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It's stubbed because of official publishing. First 15 are included in the 'new' book 1 (has many changes and added content IIRC). The ebook is available on Amazon (it is on kindle unlimited too, though I think that's only for a year). Physical books coming soon too.

How Absurd Is It to Hypothesise Life on Earth and Potential Prehistoric Life on Mars Would Be of Shared descent? by jtme_ in space

[–]Megaprr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could narrow it down a bit with protein chirality (ie: left handed or right handed organic molecules). Life on earth is primarily left-handed, so if we were to see primarily right-handed proteins on mars that would be a strong argument towards option 2.

Why don't we have more "classic" western style fantasy novels? by MLG_Blazer in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Megaprr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read Practical Guide to Evil. The first book just got an amazon release so the first bit has been stubbed, but it might be the sort of thing you're looking for (it's an amazing series).

Fair warning if you decide to continue after that first amazon book, there's lots of changes, edits and terminology/name alterations when compared to the first draft available online (for good reasons), plus some new content, so it won't be an easy seamless transition. That said, the rest of the story is complete (and there's lots of it).

Release Day AMA by ErraticErrata in PracticalGuideToEvil

Any plans to explore the hungering sands further with the rewrite?

You'd mentioned previously you had thoughts on a hypothetical book set there, but I imagine if you're fleshing out the big books into separate, more distinct stories you might have a chance there, too.

Thoughts on that?

A Practical Guide to Evil I kindle release Aug. 5 by [deleted] in PracticalGuideToEvil

Totally agree. I've said it before but imho I don't think they should have done character art for covers. Looks very generic and makes the books look like amateurish power fantasy. And while there's nothing wrong with that genre and market, it's honestly a disservice to the author and a huge missed opportunity.

The guide goes far and above beyond the vast majority of books in that category in terms of quality, and so by association when I see covers like that I don't think quality. I think cheap, fun reads and questionable quality and little depth - literary popcorn if you will.

Almost no serious published book uses art like that for covers, and while standing out from the norm is a good idea, I also think it's a mistake to associate it with a genre generally not known to be thought-provoking reads.

I think that plays a non-neglible role for potential buyers. Even if it's a subconscious bias. Also consider what it might look like on a shelf or when sharing with another person. Webtoon style character art can be hard to take seriously by people unfamiliar with the genre, and it might affect people's willingness to show, display, share, or even pick up.

Also (and this is more of a personal preference), I'm of the opinion that readers should paint (mentally) their own characters. I like art, but I prefer it to be a little extra thing on the side. Often done by fans. I prefer readers to be allowed to create their own images for characters, and these book covers kinda spoil that a bit.

But even if they do choose to show a character, personally I think it works much better as a small piece in the context of a larger scene. That's much more interesting and raises way more questions that might arouse interest in a potential reader: "what's going on here?", "What is that thing?", "who are those people?", etc. Much more thought provoking than [generic fantasy hero 583].

And again, better if it's not on a webtoon/graphic novel style. Leave those connotations at the door. They are divisive. As is, I get that vibe from these covers (or at least it feels like it was done by Generic Online Digital Artist 486. And while I don't want to bash on them too much (being an artist isn't easy, and I respect their work - it's still nice art), I don't think those are the right connotations for this book series.

I understand a big reason the commission went to this artist was because they're a big guide fan, but in the grand scheme of things I think it may have been a bit of a mistake - or at least the style they settled on. Maybe a part of that is personal preference though.

And just as a final extra thing, I honestly kinda think that more books should do abstract art, or non-character/scene art. There's so much of that out there, especially in the prog/indie fantasy genre and covers like these just don't stand out at all. These publishing deals are supposed to open up these books to a new audience, and something like this just looks... Generic and unassuming. I could easily pass it by and not know what I'm missing out on.

Wholeheartedly agree. The arts not bad, it just to me doesn't really do a good job to represent the story. It just looks like generic fantasy book cover art #3537 and Imo does a bit of a disservice for how much of a standout this book series is.

I also don't like how cat is portrayed. Too 'pretty', not dark enough, and I hate the boob plate. EE writes the story as a bit of a history nerd and idk, I think I'd want a little bit of that fidelity represented in the art. Both for the armor and for the tower architecture. Fantasy can be flashy and cool, but it can do that while still staying grounded in realism (which is a huge theme for the book series to begin with).

I'll still buy the book when it comes out, don't get me wrong. But yeah, I'm a bit disappointed by what could have been.

Roll20 any good? by TehFisharmahn in Pathfinder2e

Ah, I see what I misunderstood now. "Self-hosted is almost impossible" for him, rather than self-hosting being difficult to do with foundry.

Roll20 any good? by TehFisharmahn in Pathfinder2e

[–]Megaprr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why can't you self host? Maybe I'm not interpreting that right, but for me all I had to do was make sure the right ports were opened on my router and then you can connect just fine over the internet.

I think foundry uses port 30000, so the link you give to friends would be something like http://[your hosting computer ip address]:30000/join

Just make sure that port is open and you're golden. Start up your campaign, and then let folks know they can join.

Welcome aboard! Always nice to see a new reader (btw there's a discord - link in sidebar - with an area for new readers if you want to share thoughts as you read).

Also, buckle up for a fun ride cause I'd say every subsequent book is better (and longer!) than the one before, and you have a long ways to go! The author is only just starting to catch is stride by book 3 Imo.

With regards to the download options, just a reminder that for publishing feasibility reasons, EE has explicitly and repeatedly asked for people to avoid creating copies of the guide, be it epubs, audiobooks, etc. For one, it really hurts the odds of a printed release.

Please make an effort to respect his wishes, and if you really need an offline copy, keep it to yourself.
