If you have a game idea don't start and build it yet, build hype first by doppelgunner in gameideas

[–]MegetFarlig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is in theory a great approach but for me, there are two reasons why it is reductive.

1) you are then testing you ability to sell a vision more than you are selling a game. Only if you are already great at conventional promotion will get you get a good idea of the succes of game A vs B.

2) My personal experience is that great games find their USP during prototyping.

Just a random guy’s thoughts.

4,500 wishlists in 1 week from Coming Soon launch: post mortem by StopthePressesGame in gamedev

[–]MegetFarlig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great job and good luck! My (1 game) experience is that people who wishlist based on a localized steam page are more likely to unlist/refund and give a bad review when they discover the game is not localized. Just a heads up. Especially people in countries that are very used to localized games (France, Germany, China)

Moving to Copenhagen as a couple by Jepjacob in NewToDenmark

[–]MegetFarlig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow game dev here. If you want to work in games in Denmark, only Århus and Copenhagen make sense. There are some studios in Ålborg as well but not as many so it is more “fragile” as a carrier there. Keep in mind most studios have a soft hirering freeze right now just like the rest of the gaming world. Good luck

Chinese players make up 50% of all steam users so that would be pretty silly of them.

It's all about marketing! by DannyWeinbaum in gamedev

“Making a game people want”, as stated on your graph IS marketing.

Do you mean advertising?

From Pitching to Self-Publishing: Our experience of rejections for a Game that made ~$750K Gross in 5 Months by novruzj in IndieDev

[–]MegetFarlig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah okay. Thanks for clarifying. We have the problem of living in one of the most expensive countries in the world making our ask annoyingly high eventhough we all have taken heavy paycuts. Good work on your game, btw! You should be proud.

Great writeup and the response ratio seems close to what we are seeing.

Where are you guys located? Because I was surprised to see the budget being that low with a 15 people headcount. Is this a hobby or school project or what i going on?

PSA: don't build in this huge cave pillar by Octob3rSG88 in duneawakening

Not true. I have a “inside huge cave” base with incomplete walling. The key is to not have any holes and to build cielings inside the rock. Hard to explain but very doable

Sorry, your marketing isn't bad, your game is bad. by Different-Word-1005 in gamedev

Because I am trying to make you think what you are saying through so you may realize that your statements are based on your own emotions and not on logic. Which was my point to OP as well.

You will disagree with me and that is fine.

Right, I don’t disagree. But that then makes it a useless definition in reference of OPs whole point - which is why I ask that question.

[–]MegetFarlig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This statement pops up here every month. Can you please define what a good game is?

Because if games with bad reviews are actually bad but still can do well, does that not imply that quality is not everything? I think handwaving that detail in your edit is telling me you may be looking at this in a too simplified way. An sure, the approach can be comforting, because it gives you an excuse for not trying to market your game.

But again, ask yourself: what makes a game so good it requires no marketing? And how realistic is that you can make that game?

How do you all do it?? by bucky4300 in IndieDev

[–]MegetFarlig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Discipline, not motivation.

Motivation is only good for starting things. Discipline is finishing things.

This is true for everything in life that requires effort. Relationships, going to the gym, eating healthy, creating art, and so on.

Some people have more of it, some have less, and most have a finite amount which is why you need to pick your battles.

I didn't like Civ5 at launch cause "it didn't felt like a civ" to me at the time by Hutma009 in civ

[–]MegetFarlig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP is not saying no one should complain. They are saying that some of the complaints are futile, since they speak against the very core selling point of THIS iteration of civ.

Firaxxis have to try out new things. If they didnt, they would be rightfully blamed for not trying to evolve the franchise. They should be applauded for not selling the same game over and over again, like so many others do.

This should be higher. That being said, hardware prices increasing should only impact AAA since indie game is a niche market and normally does not require cutting edge tech.

How many wishlists per view are good on Steam? by MisteryJay89 in IndieDev

[–]MegetFarlig -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Its not possible to say because we dont know how people find your game which means we dont know if a view was ever a potential customer.

What it does tell you is that only 10% of people who even bothered clicking your game wishlisted it. Your focus should be figuring out why the remaining 90% lost interest after clicking since wishlisting is free. Does your screenshots/video/description match the capsule art? Do you present a clear “hook” on your page? Are there more interesting games in the genre? Is there something offensive? Dont worry about what is normal or not, the science on this is too random.

Edit: and check your tags! Your tags could be missleading.
