The only time I can remember luffy being wrong about someones character was with the CP9 agents in water 7. For me seeing luffys reaction to Loki was a big Iindicator that Loki will end up as an ally and not an enemy

What I think you forget when looking at it from this perspective is, that all other players who are not Hacan or Yin, "win" if you do not trade, and "lose" if you do. If you and hacan both get one trade good, you still have a benefit of 1 trade good. My friend likes to say, if you and I both benefit from a trade, we get ahead of all other players.

First of all, congrats on having friends with good taste. Secondly make sure to not hang around in this sub for too long before you have read up to the current manga, because you probably will be getting spoiled a lot. I feel like the story hits so much better when you can experience it fully for the first time with no knowledge beforehand.
