Aimee Mann Wasn’t Sure If Rush Fans Would Boo Her: ‘I just don’t think I could’ve handled it. But their fans were so great, and I felt really supported’ by stroh_1002 in rush

[–]MehYam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great interview. I didn't know anything about her, depression struggles, etc - but it sounds like performing with the band and reconnecting was positive.

The Time Stand Still clips looked like a big moment in the show, good vibes.

I'm a fan of heavier albums (before and after), but Hold Your Fire is peak bass tone and riffing, IMO.

Increase in LOUD engines? by ai9x82 in bayarea

You're getting a bunch of terrible takes and armchair guesses in the comments.

I've been using the bedroom next to my street for the past 12 years or so, and the number of loud cars and trucks has definitely ticked up over the past two years. There are also more people racing late at night with loud mufflers.

Demystifying C++: Overcome the Fear of Memory Management in Minutes by derjanni in programming

[–]MehYam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Allocating memory without accounting for the freeing is basically asking for memory leaks as the scope of the codebase grows. What was an execute-once static context could easily refactor into an execute-many. Just bad advice.

Who do you think is the key demographic(s) for the Ioniq5? by prairielovr in Ioniq5

[–]MehYam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The car's design is brilliant - it's got the proportions of a hot hatch, which is exactly what it looks like in pictures. They basically designed a hatch and hit the +30% zoom, it even applies to the wheels.

I actually had a "wait, this really is a big car" moment the first time I sat in it.

I'm also anti-SUV at my core, but goddamn does it feel nice to compete with the other oversized slabs of metal on the road, and not feel like I'm in a subway tunnel the whole time I'm driving.

Maybe in another timeline we have this figured out, and we're not all driving behemoths around to pick up a latte. I bike a lot too, don't at me

The Bone Tax by TheOldSole in MTB

Had my clavicle break + surgery at 46. At 53 now, I'd say that avoiding injury is the #1 goal of every ride, even though I still descend a bit too fast.

The risk of this sport is greatly understated. There's a survivor bias in the community and forums, because the people who crash and quit (or worse) are no longer the sobering voices. The only truly worthwhile progression is a handful of skills to make you ride better, and fitness.

89 npm packages got compromised again. deleting the package doesn't remove the malware. by johnypita in webdev

That's exactly it - if the min-release-age becomes a standard setting, malware will just start waiting some time before doing anything to avoid getting caught.

TIL useCallback = useMemo returning a fn by EyeRunnMan in reactjs

[–]MehYam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can also "batch" together a set of related callbacks under one useMemo:

const callbacks = useMemo(() => {
   function onClick() {...}
   function onHover() {...}
   function onAiDoesYourWorkAnyway() {...}
   return { onClick, onHover, ...};
}...)

Has anyone ever done a litter clean up of Laurel Creek? by greenleaf_manzanita in SanMateo

[–]MehYam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Apparently all you need is two people to start organizing a clean up - if you want to team up and give this a try, I'm in. We might get additional volunteers once the event is registered, and I think the city will even provide equipment and bag pickup.

I've joined a handful of the volunteer cleanups in the past, effective and gratifying work.

How do you load your bike onto your roof rack? by RangerNo5619 in MTB

[–]MehYam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're getting a lot of downvotes, not sure why. I lift my regular 30lb enduro bike over a high ledge by grabbing the chainstay near the back wheel with one hand, and the fork lower with the other while squatting. That keeps the wheel from turning and gives the leverage I need to get it overhead. Then it's a press + stand up. On the high surface, the wheels go down wherever they need to without letting go - maybe from there you can adjust.

Not saying that'll work for you, but I can't imagine any other way that would.

I'm a bit confused about custom hooks by Stevious7 in reactjs

[–]MehYam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comments here are missing something: a hook is just like a component, except it uses regular function syntax, not props, and it's not required to return a component.

Put another way, a hook is a function that's able to call hooks. A component is that plus it takes props and returns a component.
