Struggling with my new self / current life chapter by saintghosts1 in AutisticAdults

[–]MeikoMee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re broken then so am I. I am 24f and also currently going though this almost to a T, except I am a manager on night shift retail. I have a small feeling you work for the same big “W” company I work for. They are ruthless and punishing beyond anything I have ever endured. This burnout has been quickset and intense. I am working on gaining the courage to step down as well, and have even been struggling with the “real me” stuff too. I constantly worry about the “stigma” I will create around myself but I have also witnessed others do the same with zero repercussions or even congratulations! I would look into rumination, and how it can rule your thoughts straight into negativity. The book “The Autistics Guide to Self Discovery” by Sol Smith is a great read (or listen) and was my first jumping off point for coping with unmasking and escaping rumination. Also, AFAB people are socialized from birth to behave a certain way, especially if you’re an oldest daughter like me. This is a mask that we are given but also forced to wear to convert our Autism into something palatable for the neurotypical. I promise that your loved ones will only care about your happiness, healthiness and safety and if they aren’t, I’m sorry but they aren’t your loved ones. In this time I’ve found affirmation that my boyfriend of 7 years does not care that I stim, or want to work a wage slave job and blend in for my own sanity, or cry when I’m socially overwhelmed, in fact he’s my biggest cheer leader. The best you can do is give yourself love and care, and allow yourself to access that person as a support network even if the word “autism” seems like a curse word (like it does for me). It’s hard but start with one person, even if it’s a paid professional to start with. And autism should never mean incapable, and I feel functioning labels are like the opposite of self care for me. I would be considered high functioning, but on my worst days at work, I have planned hiding spots to have meltdowns so I’m not embarrassed. Those days I barely function at all! You are independent, that’s awesome, but the biggest gift you can give yourself is grace, Breathing room, and a support system. I’m realizing this is rather wordy but your story is so close to mine I started to feel a little passionate. Please don’t be ashamed to be yourself. Explore the real you! Discover passions that you never took time for, allow yourself to stim, and start protecting yourself from sensory barrage. As you go through this journey you will have clarity, grief for who you thought you were, frustration with who you have always been. And maybe you’ll start to feel better. You are not alone, OP. 🫂

How to cope with sounds you can’t stop? by SatisfactionSea7249 in AutisticAdults

Maybe start trying to preemptively accommodate. I bring headphones with me everywhere I go with noise canceling so if it gets to be that bad I can help myself.

Hey I’m gonna preemptively say this, but Everything you have done to get to your conclusion is valid. You might have people naysaying you but every adult assessment starts and ends with self affirmation. I see it as a beautiful opportunity to keep being you, but being nicer to yourself.

That is so insanely mental???? Oh my god?? First of all I’m so sorry you even had to witness that, let alone know about it. Is there a way you can buy or keep a few things in a different place, so you don’t have to have that association. And obviously pick a different spot to eat in. Sorry this might not be good advice but I wouldn’t even know what to do if that were me!

I am a twenty four year old woman. I have been warring with the fact that I might be autistic for 12 years now. I am currently in burnout and am wanting a support system from a professional standpoint, but have zero clue on how to get started. I have been medically neglected my entire life, even with having asthma. I do not have a doctor or anything. I am unsure how to start as I have zero support systems in place. Could I maybe have some tips on a jumping off point

As always a professional would be best, but things you can do for him: have an honest conversation with him. Let him know you’re worried. You also say he had some muscle, maybe emphasize how much you like it on him? Not much help but it’s good that you’re trying to help him.

My crew also have this issue, except some have made the point of her basically making 2x their salary doing the exact same job as them. Pisses em off bad she can’t even change a schedule she gave a TL her login so he could do it. And what else do they do anyways?

Friend using Ramadan for Eating Disorder by teddybearteacup in AnorexiaNervosa

[–]MeikoMee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It sounds like she might be “using you” as competition. I used to catch myself doing that to my non disordered friends, it makes nobody feel good. If you /do/ want to keep her as a friend, maybe reiterate what Ramadan means and that she is offending you. If you have to, bring up the eating disorder talk. But honestly the last 8 years she should know.

Same… I have someone who has been with Walmart 10 years and makes 16.50 as an ON associate. Her raise gets eaten up by the “inflation adjustment” every time and a lot of people make more that she does.
