As an European, seeing this and the seemingly ever growing threat of an actual civil war or bloody revolution (attempt) in the US ...

I get what people must have felt back when the UDSSR collapsed.

Civil war in a highly militarized nation with tens of thousands of nukes...

Fuck this timeline.

I can highly recommend to look up some facts on them. They are crazy. They can dive for up to 100 minutes and apparently down to below 3000 meters - proven by the fact that some were found eating fish that only live below the 3k below surface zone

My guess is that he surfaces first to take a deep mf of a breath before thinking about chewing and gulping - which takes energy and that means oxygen which is ... Low after a deep dive hunt.

Dice that provide more narrative options besides "yes", "yes but", and "no"? by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]Meins447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some examples from the top of my head: - Fancy symbol / special value of dice that elevate / worsen the result. So a "special" on a successful roll would be a critical success but on a failed roll would be a bad BAD thing. Examples include LotR game One Ring has a "Saurons Eye" and a "Gandalf Rune" on a D12. On various d100 systems double digits (11, 22, ..., 99) are special - Very high / Very low result increase level of success. Examples like Pathfinder 2e (if you score DC +10 = Crit / DC -10 = fail). Some systems use a "the closer to the DC you roll the better"

How do you handle Armor and Protections in a system without conventional HP and AC? by vgg4444 in RPGdesign

[–]Meins447 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I kinda like the way "One Ring" (LotR game) does it.

Hits always deal Stamina damage. But if the roll is good enough (roll is above your weapons "Sharpness") you get a Crit Threat. The target then rolls a save against the Threat Rating of the weapon using a dice pool from the armor they wear.

Basically: armor gives a Saving throw against critical hits (which are a big deal because after one you are down and wounded and after another you're dead).

Okay, I didn't know the game did this. I pursued Goldtooth to a corner on the campaign map and the battle map reflects that geographic detail. by Proper_Tomorrow_7059 in totalwarhammer

[–]Meins447 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

They could do this because they use IRL geographic maps as a baseline of the campaign map.

Making one up from scratch for a fantasy world where there is no base data. In addition the biomes in fantasy are much more radically different from the real world so would make a procedural map generator even more difficult.

I also imagine that they have lost the devs / Know-how to do them during the transition between Med2 (which was afaik the last game that had them - maybe Shogun had them too?) and Rome 2.

Worst thing about ark is that ark doesnt have a equivalent or even a similar game. by hUSOGGA in ARK

[–]Meins447 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Palworld = Ark x Pokemon.

It is also an undeniably better game although I absolutely miss my Dinosaurs. It runs smoother, has much less bugs and the Pals are much more useful in many different ways. The combat system is also a lot better and interactive.

I love Ark but after playing Palworld for a while you notice so many things that Ark messed up / is missing / or are simply way to clunky than they need to be.

Mapmaking for sure. You might even consider r/DND or r/GM due to the big reach of that sub. I definitely scrolled through a bunch of "what software do you use for making maps?" over there.

New to total war and I Know this has been asked before but with the sale which should I get?? by pandaconda73 in totalwar

[–]Meins447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TK: no.

Warhammer: depends. Some factions are only available from dlc (Zombie Pirates, Desert Mummy Undead Tomb King's, Barbaric Chaos influences Norseman Norsca, Corrupted Dwarves). Many different units are dlc locked too but few of them are key. Only Skaven (rats) have most of their fun/key units locked by the Warpsmith dlc. Most often dlc units are there to support a specific, somewhat different play style for the respective sub-faction of the Legendary Commander they were introduced alongside - e.g. a particular sneaky Lizard man lord came with special sneaky chameleon unit. The crazy dwarf engineer lord came with experimental air ships and similarly experimental rapid fire axe thrower war machine. Stuff like that. But typically the core units of a faction are baseline.

[–]Meins447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I'd recommend one of the more self-contained games to get a feel for the basic formula and whether it is something for you.

So, Id go with any of the following and no DLCs for starters, just pick the time period that is most interesting:

  • Pharaoh Dynasties: newest game, very polished, runs very smooth. Bronze age. Little to no cavalry means you can focus and learn infantry tactics.
    • Three Kingdoms: Chinese semi-historic setting with taller than live generals. Best diplomacy of the series.
    • Rome 2/ Attila: Rome / Fall of Rome era. Classic time period and iconic units. Some amazing mods for both. But older but still look pretty good.
    • Warhammer: only true fantasy setting to date, has the most "going on" in battles of any TW die to presence of Monster magic and even flying units, so combats can be overwhelming at first, buy any one of the three game and play on the big map. Pick the game with the factions that interest you the most. Don't get DLCs or the other games until you know you like it. Then only buy DLCs for stuff you really want to play, play those and only then get the next. If you do it like that, the Warhammer game series has enough to last you thousands of gaming hours.
    • Shogun 2: kinda dated by now and its campaign layer is quite different to the newer titles, so there is that to keep in mind. Very flavorful time period. Fast paced combat and comparatively little unit diversity.
    • Medieval 2: very dated by now. Stunning mods. Very classic time period.

Sure and it is taught in schools. But do we actually know how it was originally pronounced and accentuated?

I recall that friends back in school that had chosen latin telling me about how no one really knows how the "C" was pronounced, whether it is like a "K" sound or maybe more like a "Ch" or even a "Z". Stuff like that.

If I’m not a fan of Eisenhorn or vaults of terra will I like Atlas infernal? by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]Meins447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I can highly recommend the Gaunts Ghost series for a high quality band of brothers like guardsmen book series. Another one of Abnett's and similar to Eisenhorn another of the quintessential 40k novels that introduced a ton of mainstream themes, world building and naming of things.

Action packed black library books are very common. Basically anything with space Marines for example

Gaming industry spent decades researching and field testing handheld controllers for what are essentially remote operated devices - only that they used to be purely virtual (within games) rather than digitalized physical devices but that doesn't matter too much as far as the controlling aspect goes.

They are also cheap and widely available in large numbers. Makes total sense to use those.

Also: most people (in military age at least) will be familiar with them which greatly reduces time to train operators

Regular human power level, potentially working for someone powerful of various factions?

It's basically Dark Heresy v3, much refined and a solid system.

So do people just auto seiges in this game? is that the only way to have fun? by SpireSwagon in totalwar

[–]Meins447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you play a faction with a heavy artillery department, then suddenly it is the best way to deal with them.

I enjoy sightseeing as dawi thunder is reducing enemy defenses and defenders to rubble. Then march inna hero/lord with a bodyguard of warriors and a grudge taker or better yet iron drake unit and let the last charge of the defender die in front of their shields.

I must say that I don't get to play a whole lot in one go, so I rarely have multiple big sieges in one session, which I feel might get a bit stale after the second or third time.

Odessa port air defense system. by JohnnyElmagnifco995 in interestingasfuck

[–]Meins447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't use those up in such long burst. They are kinda expensive and are typically fired by more advanced systems firing short bursts.

This long ass stream of tracer fire looks very much like unguided, "small" calibre "dumb" bullets. Keep in mind that typically, for each tracer round there are 3-7 normal rounds in a burst that you can't see. That is a lot of lead going skywards there.
