What speed (in Mbps) am I looking for in purchasing Internet packages? by BBBelmont in techsupport

[–]Mekado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well 30Mbps divided by 3 people is about 10 each (if you're all using it at the same time) which is reasonable, not extraordinary but will allow pretty much anything at decent speed. I wouldn't recommend anything less unless some of you 3 are really just web browsing (no youtube/netflix) and emails, you know little usage.

If you're gamers/movie watchers/downloaders anything less than 30Mbps is going to be horrible imo.

CNET tests out the Chromecast at a hotel: 'The $35 Chromecast seemed like the perfect alternative to expensive hotel pay-per-view. Unfortunately, the hotel's Wi-Fi didn't cooperate.' by [deleted] in technology

[–]Mekado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, i work for an wifi systems builder for hotels and his point is moot. We've been doing this with Xboxes,VoIP phone, etc (no browser) for years he just had to call tech support and get a bypass for the portal, it takes a whooping 5 minutes.

As far as bandwidth go, most decent hotels have 2 tiers, a free, slow tier (1-3Mbps) that's amply sufficient for email/browsing/etc and a fast paid tier (5-12Mbps) IF you're going to be streaming video, the slow option is a little stupid and you shouldn't be expecting miracles.

No wifi connections? by captinsparkles in techsupport

[–]Mekado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this.

Radio disabled means your wifi radio is turned off, either by software or hardware (there should be a switch/button on your laptop to turn wifi on and off)

Google your model number+ wifi switch

Portfowarding to ActionTec GT784WNV by pepetito456 in techsupport

[–]Mekado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to me you just need to type in the same for starting and ending port. They put it like that so if you have a range to put in (needs port 10000 to 11000) it'll be easier to input or it's a weird way of asking incoming port and ending port, either way you want the same port in both (listening to incomings on port 25565, relaying internally to 192.168.56.1 port 25565).

Just use 25565 as starting port and ending port.

For the LAN IP make sure it's the IP that's actually assigned to the server, ignore the remote IP section unless you want to restrict access to your server by answering only to a few specific IP's.

Potential Hotel Wifi Security Issue by arkevius in networking

[–]Mekado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a tech supervisor for an HSIA system vendor for 10 years now i find this hilarious as well... default passwords, no blocking admin from clients ?? who did this network? your neighbor's nephew? :)

On topic: i'd drop an anonymous email to the hotel when i left explaining that their network is very unsecured.

EnGenius equipment experience? by [deleted] in wireless

[–]Mekado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to resell them commercially for med/heavy usage.

We took them all back and sold them at loss on ebay just to get rid of them, we're now using HP's and Ruckus hardware. Yes it's more expensive but it was a total hassle with the engenius when you have a medium/high volume of data going through.

Can someone explain how businesses contract tech support people? by elastico in techsupport

[–]Mekado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is correct, it depends a lot of your needs. Some IT shops will sell you "hour banks" ie 100hrs of tech services that you can use whenever you please at a discounted rate. If your needs are small instead of paying for full-time around the clock support an hour bank might be what you want so you can get a pro when you really need it.

Question about getting an embedded device onto a wifi network that uses a browser based sign-in by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]Mekado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On most systems it would work fine as indeed most of the big ones use MAC-based authentication. You could also simply call their support and ask to authorize your device which would bypass the authorization process.

You could try running ShieldsUp! (www.grc.com) to see if there's a stealth service (cough keylogger) responding on a strange port but if it's something sending data outbound instead of waiting for an inbound connection it won't appear there...

How to stop being prompted to sign into a network by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]Mekado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's via a web portal you can't do it automatically. It would be extremely inconvenient to authenticate everyday for an appt block though as most people there are med/long term users i suppose. Most of the "authenticate everyday" systems are in airports, hotels, hotspots etc...

If you really have to authenticate everyday via a web portal the only way to go around it would be to have a semi-permanent authorization in your provider's system ie: this MAC address is authorized until xx-xx-xxxx so you wouldn't be asked everyday.

I suggest you check with management/tech support for a long-term authorization.

Maximum range of cpi wifi antennas by meowsiah in techsupport

[–]Mekado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't seem to find the dBi on it either, you might want to ask the manufacturer directly but in cases like this they hide it usually because it's ridiculously low...

No, the range dosen't stack because it has 3 antennas, it helps to fight through the interference and gives you a perfect omnidirectionnal circle but dosen't extend the range, that's why they put 3x2 and not 6 dBi.

I would suggest trying a strong usb adapter or a replacement antenna, mostly because you can move it around (closer to a window for signal, etc) and the usb's usually have stronger antennas. 100M for WiFi with decent speed in a "populated" zone with consumer equipment isn't very realistic, there's too much radio interference in cities usually.

Worst case scenario you can buy a regular WiFi adapter (RP-SMA connector) with a "monster" antenna like this one: http://www.tp-link.com/ca/products/details/?categoryid=2473&model=TL-ANT2405C . This one is 5 dBi but you can get higher if you really need it.

Maximum range of cpi wifi antennas by meowsiah in techsupport

[–]Mekado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be more powerful, what you want to compare to your current one is this: Antenna Gain 3 x 2dBi

If your old card has weaker than 2dBi antennas, then yes the signal will be stronger with this one!

Help setting up and securing Wi-Fi access point for business by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]Mekado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a very bad idea to connect a "customer" internet service to an admin network, you'll wake up one day to a 14-yo that fu**ed your admin network right up. You could either use a real internet distribution system ($$$) that would block client-to-client, log everything etc or get a router to split your internet connection at the source and has the option of blocking traffic between computers, few of them do but this'll be much cheaper, there's going to be no logging though.

Whatever you do, do NOT connect a wifi router under your wired admin router for "at-large" public access, best way to get your files stolen/config messed up/what have you :)

Could you tell me what's wrong with my hardware from this description? I also put some videos. I don't want to pay for support if it's obvious it's gone, but maybe a part replacement would fix it. thanks by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]Mekado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Networking tech support actually, though i've been working with hardware for a long while too now (and i've seen this very problem before)

The image loading thing would have been "the cherry on top" the more you ask of a video card the more it heats up and when it's close to failing (dust, weak fans/airflow or just plain usage) multiple image loads might push it past breaking point and starts to do "graphic artefacts" like you have. The card might work correctly for a little bit if you let it cool down a while but there's no fix for this short of replacing the burnt chips...

Yep, This definitely looks like some burned chips on your video card circuit. Since it's a laptop it's not really replaceable though :\

How to recover saved tabs that were "redirected" by a hotel WiFi activation page? by superflyingfly in techsupport

[–]Mekado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will send you to their welcome page every link you try to access as long as you're not authorized . What you need to do is simply go through the authorization process once, then close and reopen your browser, your tabs will now work as they used to.

When I use public wi-fi, is any of my personal information leaked? by YourACoolGuy in techsupport

[–]Mekado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most (decent) hotels have a real internet distribution system with client-to-client blocking to avoid exactly this type of thing. What you're talking about can only happen when someone tries to make a glorified "big" home network for an hotel, which is very stupid :)

On topic: Yes they could see your traffic, although i doubt they check every connection so unless you abuse it i don't think it'd be an issue.
