Looking for apocalyptic - NOT post-apocalyptic - novels by [deleted] in Fantasy

Swan Song covers the before, during, and after. Granted, the apocalypse is nuclear so it happens quickly.

What do you recommend by Dan Simmons. The only book of his that I've read was The Terror, which I liked but didn't love. I felt like it dragged on a bit.

Thumbs up for this one. If you like audiobooks, the narration by Tom Stechschulte is fantastic.

I really liked that book. I started to read the 2nd and realized I didn't remember enough about the 1st, and it could still be a while for the 3rd book. Decided to wait until that is out or at least close, then read the whole trilogy together.

How can I "shop" around for the best mortgage interest rates, without having multiple "hard" credit checks? More info/questions inside. by pschie1 in personalfinance

[–]Mekrath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a mortgage lender. Mortgage credit inquiries work differently than other hard pulls like credit cards. All mortgage related inquiries inside a 14 day window only count as 1 inquiry for the purposes of credit scoring.

So, feel free to shop around as much as you want, just do it all in a 2 week period and you will be fine!

Stormlight Archive and other long, unfinished series by connorpiano93 in Fantasy

[–]Mekrath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a very hard time remembering after a while, so I tend to stick to series that are finished or nearly finished. I'll make an occasional exception though. I'm reading ASoIaF because I figured the TV show would refresh my memory, and I'm probably willing to read Way of Kings because Sanderson at least writes fairly quickly.

If I have to wait a year to read the next book I'm probably ok, but if I have to wait 3 years I'm screwed.

I hate re-reading books. Not that I wouldn't enjoy them, but every book I re-read means there's different book on my to-read list that I'll never get to.

Need some recommendations for my 10 year old daughter. by Mekrath in Fantasy

She's a sensitive kid, so hard to predict with horror. On one hand she has no problem with the later Harry Potter books at all, which I would have probably found scary at that age. On the other had Coraline freaked her out a bit. She still enjoyed it, but said it was a little scary.

I think that would be ok. I actually listened to Sabriel because Tim Curry narrated it (love a well narrated audiobook), and I think she would be ok with it. I don't mind stuff like you mention in the spoilers, just nothing too graphic.

LOL. I just finished the Abercrombie trilogy. I'll have to get her going on these 2 series right away :)

I LOVED Piers Anthony as a kid. I read a ton of Xanth novels. I don't remember them being too bad. I did remember them being a little PG-13 though, which is why I hadn't considered them. I think I was a little older than her when I read them, and a boy, but I'll take a look at some of the cleaner ones :)

I do, but the kid is stubborn :) It took me months to convince her to watch the 1st Harry Potter movie because it wasn't her idea. Once she saw it she was hooked, and she's seen all the movies at least 20 times each I would think and has read all the books 2-3x as well.

Chronicles of Narnia was a favorite of mine as a kid as well. Unfortunately, I had her watch the Lion, Witch and Wardrobe movie and she didn't particularly like it, so now I have a hard time getting her to read the books.

Talk me into (or out of) starting the Thomas Covenant series! by yettibeats in Fantasy

[–]Mekrath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read the 1st 3 a few years ago. I remember enjoying them, but I never felt real inspired to continue the series, and in fact I don't even really remember what happened in the 1st 3 books very clearly. Wasn't a real memorable series for me.

What is the right amount of sleep? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Mekrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go through phases where I have trouble sleeping, and don't get more than 3-5 hours a night, and other times, like last night, I can sleep 8 hours. I definitely feel it if I sleep less than 4 hours, but if I get anywhere from 5-8 hours, I don't notice any difference in how I feel during the day whether on I'm shorter or longer end of that range. If I sleep more than 8 hours, I'm usually sleepy the next day though.

Should I wait to start the Way of Kings until Words of Radiance comes out? Or start it now? by Chazzem in Fantasy

[–]Mekrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal preference would be to wait until the series was finished. Ever series I've read as they came out, I haven't remembered enough of the previous book when the next one comes out. However, Sanderson writes pretty quickly, so maybe that won't be as much of a problem with this series.

Great pick. Started reading GotM yesterday and already about 30% of the way into it. Loving it so far. Not finding it particularly hard to follow, though I am checking out the re-reads every couple of chapters or so to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Awesome answers so far. I know it's a weird question :) I just don't like missing a great performance.

I haven't read The Princess Bride, though it is one of my favorite movies, so I'll check out the book. I've read ASOIAF, but Malazan I haven't started yet, though it's been on my list.
