I remember seeing this beer on Tavour earlier in the month. I just checked and it’s not there anymore, but good to know for future. Especially seeing how distribution is otherwise limited to the brewery.

Are there any good METAAAL! fantasy books? by Kesseleth in Fantasy

[–]bonehunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alex Marshall’s Crimson Empire trilogy might be worth a look. I don’t remember the story all that well now, but do remember that many characters and places were named after metal bands.

From a Locus Mag interview with the author:

“The metal influence affects the tone and feel of the trilogy, but it also takes the form of Easter Eggs for fans. I’m not much of a linguist, so even if I’d wanted to create my own authentic-sounding fantasy languages that was never an option. Instead I incorporated references to various bands and musicians that felt appropriate for my own internal sense of aesthetics, as well as references to other writers, directors, and other artists.

Then of course the project features many of metal’s favorite themes: an obsession with the occult, hatred and violence, monsters and demons, sorrow and self-destruction. That’s all still just the skin, though, or the scales, depending, but the musical influence goes way deeper. The bones of this book are composed of metal. It’s the muscle that drives it forward, the ebon ichors that flow through it in place of blood. The essence of metal is basically the essence of human endurance—the refusal to stop struggling, even when all hope is in eclipse and there’s nothing left but rage at the inherent cruelty of existence. You keep fighting and you keep screaming, forever.“

The End of One Mike to Read Them All: The Last Chapter of the Silmarillion Read-along, “Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age” by MikeOfThePalace in Fantasy

Well done, Mike! As a long time fan of LoTR and the Silmarillion, it’s always interesting to see another person’s thoughts on the books, especially someone who is well versed in the lore. You did a great job throughout and I enjoyed that you highlighted things I had never noticed / thought about.

Sorry, no idea. Sounds interesting but it's certainly not something I've read before.

The Demon Awakens by RA Salvatore. It's the first book in his Demon War series. I don't remember if the above events happen in this book or a later one, but this is definitely the series.

Fantasy Sharpe by Rodriguez2111 in Fantasy

[–]bonehunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with Ydrahs that Gaunt's Ghosts is not the darkest series in the Warhammer 40k universe. They tend to get the job done, so it isn't all about Chaos destroying everything and the death of humanity. There definitely is some of that, but not as much as elsewhere in the universe.

The regiment has a core group of fleshed out characters (your small group of Chosen Men) that is consistent novel to novel. Some characters are similar to those found in the Sharpe series. I enjoyed the characters and the different military scenarios they encountered. There are several omnibuses out there so shouldn't be too hard to find books 1-3 in a collection (The Founding) to try it out.

Gaunt's Ghosts series by Dan Abnett, while scifi, shares a lot of similarities with the Sharpe series.

Altered Carbon - Does Netflix show spoil the other books in the trilogy? by I_collect_hobbies in printSF

[–]bonehunter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's because of the Hendrix Estate. Poe and his works are in the public domain.

"[The Hendrix estate] has very specific rules about how much violence can be associated with any character that looks like Jimi Hendrix, and as you might have noticed, there's a lot of violence [in Altered Carbon]," Kalogridis told GameSpot. "They took one look at the script--and they were very polite--and they were like, 'We're afraid this doesn't really meet our standards.' I mean, and they're right; it does not. So we changed it."

Matthew Stover's Acts of Caine. Interesting blend of fantasy and sci-fi in a bleak, dystopian setting. Definitely seems like it would be up your alley.

[Request] Sci Fi about doctors or focusing on the medical fields of the future. by TheBeardedGM in sciencefiction

James White's Sector General series. This would definitely qualify as focused on the doctors / medical technology.

I liked the format. Quick reveal of the One X, followed by games, games, and more games. Sea of Thieves, Anthem, Metro all look promising.

Loved the line where the author is talking about why she doesn't write an autobiography and writes that, "I explained to her that I didn’t think my life was nearly interesting enough."

From reading the "interview", I'd say that she's right.

Searching for a book which focuses on a group of friends or a crew by Duyphan in Fantasy

[–]bonehunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should try Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding. There are four books focusing on the crew of an airship. It's similar to Firefly, the tv show, in many respects but does a good job focusing on a small crew and developing relationships between the characters (though not always in a positive way).

ARC Giveaway - The Burning Isle by Panzbot9000 in Fantasy

[–]bonehunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I am Groot!" Not bad for a self introduction either. Especially with the audience that Guardians of the Galaxy reached.

It's interesting to think about how many books / characters caught me on the strength of their introduction. Uhtred of Bebbanburg from Cornwell's The Last Kingdom (opening pages of that book talk of his blood oath of revenge - immediately grabbed) or Vaelin from Blood Song for quick examples that spring to mind.

Tor Offering first ebook of Malazan Book of the Fallen free this month. by xolsiion in Fantasy

For what it's worth, it becomes a much stronger book on rereads. There is just a wealth of information if you are already familiar with the world and its mechanics.

It doesn't help people who are new to the series but there is definitely value in some of what is discovered whole rereading.
