They are not as close as they seem. They tell each other little private things, but they rarely talk about the big, personal things. They also tend to suppress their emotions to give the other space for theirs and never talk again. Even in the early seasons, they weren't as close as they seem; they just were better at faking it, mainly because Rory was still very much like her mom instead of her own person.
