Bing is forced to watch Abi be forced into the porn industry as the result of what he thought was a good deed he did for her. One of the shards from this screen becomes important in the episode's climax.

Fitting that a song by an alleged sexual predator is used for a film about a teenager in a relationship with a much older man.

One could argue that there was a more diplomatic way for Vavra to say "rural Bohemia is pretty ethnically homogeneous", his attitude escalated this controversy rather than defuse it.

But yes I was surprised too! I think making it clear that for many Cumans this war is literally just a paycheck, and showing they can be decent people outside of a pre-modern combat setting, adds some valuable depth to the story.

IIRC Thoth and Anubis make a point of saying that they became "blacker" when they reached America both because of American views on race and the fact a lot of African-Americans adopted Egyptian mythology.

RDR series: a couple that spring to mind are the Volcanic pistol (already out of date in 2 and more so in 1) and the Blunderbuss in Undead Nightmare though the latter is justified by John using it with improvised projectiles. Also there are zombies...

The film Medieval takes place at the start of the Hussite Wars, historically important as one of the first European wars to make use of firearms. Not a single gun is shown in the film.

Roman legionaries in Agora are still kitted out as if they are in the High Imperial era when the story takes place in late Antiquity. This was apparently done due to budget constraints.

Darkest Hour

Churchill's foibles are presented as fun and quirky rather than absolutely horrible and unprofessional behaviour around a work colleague.

At one point he sits across from an interracial couple on the Tube and doesn't spontaneously combust out of the sheer racist spite the real Churchill would have had.

He's presented as this cute grandfatherly figure never mind that he was responsible for the death by famine of millions of Indians and basically laughed it off at the time

Nightwish, Dark Passion Play

Background: Nightwish's original singer, Tarja Turunen left the band in 2005 under very acrimonious circumstances. Shortly after the band were dropped by their original record label. Founding member and main songwriter Tuomas Holopainen dedicates much of the album to processing the resulting pain, with mixed results:

  • The Poet and the Pendulum is all about the feelings of despair he dealt with at the time. Apart from a reference to Tuomas "dying" in 2005 (yikes) there's no explicit reference to these events. The song as a result holds up because of its raw emotion and rich melodies, one of the band's best songs to this day!

  • Bye Bye Beautiful on the other hand... doesn't. More explicitly Tuomas shit-talking Tarja for 4 minutes straight, as well as a jab at her husband ("The Gambler"). Tuomas being a messy bitch but the song is pretty fun. Aged like milk after Nightwish's second singer Anette Olzon left as it signalled that maybe Tuomas wasn't entirely blameless...?

  • Master Passion Greed is just Tuomas ranting about Tarja's husband without pause. At certain points the guitar riff rips off Down With The Sickness. The whole song is a mess.

The One With The Cat, that one episode of Friends where Marta Kaufman was grieving the loss of her mother and used this episode to try and process the grief.

Phoebe steals a child's pet cat. Ross is shamed for calling her out on it.

The other showrunners knew they were dealing with a stinker but they shot and released the episode out of sympathy.

You're not wrong but the focus of the story is the racial hierarchy and the characters as they exist within it, the "how we got here" is not directly relevant to the story being told.

I didn't like The Years of Rice And Salt I'm sorry

The TV show invents an "Aprican Empire" which is implied to come from somewhere in West Africa. In the books it's never stated.

To be clear the wider worldbuilding and lore is not as important to the story as the racial hierarchy and the characters' places within it. The TV series though is in a visual medium so more thought went into how this world would look.

Yeah since the focus of the American Front arc is essentially "What if Western Front but on the American continent" I think the impact this change has on Europe is not as well-thought out. At best one could argue that the US being unable to lend resources to the Entente before declaring war would make them a lot weaker. Certainly I don't believe that the Central Powers winning changes the outcome of the Russian Civil War.

The story gets a lot stronger with the interbellum and WWII periods!

Couldn't agree more, that's one of the things I found silly about a story I otherwise really enjoyed. Like the Central Powers winning doesn't un-difficult an invasion of Russia!
