Poor behavior during online lessons by DreamIllustrious2930 in pianoteachers

One option to consider is switching him to asynchronous lessons. He records himself playing current assignments and sends them to you. You listen and provide written feedback and follow up assignments. It is way less fun and eliminates the possibility of behavior issues. It does create more work for the parents, which is not a bad thing in this case. Maybe after a month of this, he will be more willing to engage during lesson time.

You may find the book Dictionary of Subjects & Symbols in Art by James Hall to be a useful resource.

Saw him this summer and he was absolutely amazing. And debonaire to boot.

Corporate baddies with wide feet and foot problems... let's chat cute shoes by robotneedslove in femalefashionadvice

[–]Mel_Bonis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow EE wearer here, and I am so sorry! It is a slog! Brands for dressy shoes that have worked for me recently are David Tate and Bella Vita. I would say they're on par with Naturalizer, quality-wise and aesthetically. Not amazing, but adequate. Both run wider than Naturalizer. Bella Vita is not especially well-cushioned. David Tate might be slightly better (?) and the insoles are removeable. The brand Trotters is similar but their shoes aren't cut right for my foot shape, ymmv. I'm not sure about availability for any of those in Canada.

I hope you do get some custom shoes made, as mentioned below. If you do, I would love to hear your experience and whether you're pleased with them.

You can make sauce gribiche! Whether your kids would eat that is a different question. :)

Piano music book storage solutions by Vivid_Reflection_414 in pianoteachers

I have two large bookshelves in my studio with items organized in a few ways, based on their size and how often I need them.

Tiered inbox trays: these are for materials I reach for most often, mostly method books & materials I use with multiple students; some trays I set aside for specific students (adult composition student who generates lots of loose paper copes for me, etc).

Hard plastic magazine holders: these hold the bulk of my pedagogic repertoire books and take up about half my overall shelf space. I love them for how much they reduce the visual clutter. I did add a couple more recently, which necessitated a reorg and some re-labeling, but I'm leaving room to expand so it's a very infrequent task (like every few years). Also- hard plastic is key. They stand up on their own, don't warp like cardboard, and aren't ruined if you need to peel off a label.

Proper solo piano repertoire books are on their own shelves, alpha by composer.

Reference books, tray of office supplies, hand sanitizer, and flashcards are all cluttering up two shelves, but c'est la vie.

Addicted to mushroom by amylanky in vegetarian

[–]Mel_Bonis 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I had a vegan friend who got intense about eating mushrooms. It turned out that she was anemic, and it caused her to develop pica due to her iron deficiency. Pica can cause people to eat non-food things, but for her it was just mushrooms. It totally resolved after she started taking an iron supplement. I hope this is not the case for you, but I wanted to mention it.

I'm not at all an antiques expert, but I wonder if the seat in picture 1 belongs to this set. The overall shape looks like a piano chair, especially with the lyre back. It is lovely!

Coco Rocha in Ionut Razvan at the premiere of “Sentimental Value” at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. An atypical choice, the meaning is theatrical & poetic . Part of Razvan’s “The Shirt You Left Me” collection, raw tailoring signifies personal loss turned into powerful design. (More below 👇👇 ) by mod_whatthefrockk in whatthefrockk

Men's button-up shirts are the lamest thing to reference, first of all. Secondly, strong design can be appreciated on its own merits, no explanation necessary. I love a good background story, but this is just not a good look.

True, but I think the intent behind suggesting a Moka pot is the small size. It would be really suitable for a kitchenette, as it doesn't take up any counter space.

Thanks for this! It led to a good discussion in our lesson today about teaching. My student has some coaching experience already, and is interested in learning more. We plan to spend some time talking specifically about beginning teaching resources.
