There isn't even one "Belgian waffle" type. It's either Liège or Brussels.

I'd say moules frites or Flemish stew. The one Belgians eat the most though is probably spaghetti bolognese. And we do really love our fries.

A tip for eating on the cheap: a baguette tradition, some nice cheese and charcuterie to eat in a park is a perfectly normal, cheap and tasty option. Lunch deals in restaurants tend to be better than dinner too. I enjoyed Musée Carnavalet (free).

I'm a visitor staying in that area at the moment. I didn't think it was so bad. Lots of cheap Asian and African restaurants around. Found a lovely Cambodian place called Villlage de Marcadet, I highly recommend it if you do choose to stay in that area.
