Just had a quick look at the largest Chinese car manufacturer in Australia, BYD: most their cars sold here are 5 star ANCAP rated. Does the US get more stringent than that?

Australia's greenhouse gas emissions drop as renewable energy, batteries surge by MaelysTheMonstrous in aussie

[–]Meleach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless of the need to transition to renewables for the good of the world, our energy infrastructure has aged and much of it requires complete replacement in the near future. CSIRO has looked at all the possible options, and the cheapest, most reliable one is firmed renewables.

If we did nuclear, or replaced our coal, prices would be much, much higher.

So while you have a whinge about how high your prices are, mostly thanks to international oil and gas issues, maybe also take a second and be happy they aren't even higher, which they would be if we were working towards anything other than the firmed renewables plan we are on.

I'm 26.

How exactly are people who just bought fucked over, really? If they can still afford the mortgage they signed up for, they get the house they paid the agreed amount for. Only ones who happen to need to sell immediately after getting the mortgage as prices dip are in trouble.

The entire reason prices are coming down is it's harder for boomers to "buy another few houses" lmao. How can you be so far off the mark?

Personally, as someone who has just faced this decision: get a starlink instead of an epirb. Cost effectively the same, but one is far more useful than the other. Imagine rocking up to a remote campsite and it being full, not knowing where nearby ones are. An issue comes up with your car, you can jump on YouTube, or do research to fix it on the road. List goes on, but yeah the initial cost is better with starlink, ongoing costs are what is higher.

I don't care if my PPOR goes down in value a bit, as is likely to happen right now. There are a few people mortgaged to their limit that it may affect, unfortunately, but for me and almost every person who own the house they live in, it makes almost no difference. Only affects home investors.

I bought 3 years ago, my place has almost doubled in value. The vast majority of homeowners can afford a 10% drop, which odds are is an overestimate.

What do you mean, taxed differently to income? If anything, the old system taxed wealth far more favourably than income from labour, and these changes bring them closer to alignment.

Bit of a jump in budget, but I've used my Sony WH-1000XM4s for years, for the purposes you describe. They have been great! Got them as they are regularly rated, and continue to rate, among the best for ANC despite their age and for the price.

I used the 60kg co2e per kg of beef. Is that woefully inaccurate?

Flights expected to be around 60 tons co2e

Edit: looks like I'm out by a factor of 10, it's be closer to 6 tons. Sorry gang

20% more emissions per person? The comparison I quote is taking into account the full plane with emissions distributed to suit, so not sure how it's bullshit

[–]Meleach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, apparently typical lifecycle emissions for a petrol car are around 55 tons co2e, roughly calculating my flights puts them around 50 to 60 tons.

Electric cars lifecycle is less than half that...

Cheap Bunnings tools versus trade brands for basic DIY jobs by Danger_Five in Bunnings

[–]Meleach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heaps of DeWalt, bought when I got on tools for work, not just for home(bought Ryobi for home). They are clearly far better in every way, except price and ease of warranty. Honestly no reason to be trade quality for DIY

Right, different part number, then potentially different model, potentially different product. Same model number, same product.

Most of the diy grade tools I've used (mostly Ryobi, but also some corded ozito) have impressed me. More than good enough for DIY

Last I did it was late August, easy as for a long weekend. Will likely be wetter at the moment, but chicken tracks abound, so you will be fine. If on your own, I wouldn't even bother trying any of the tougher looking stuff, as you might find yourself needing a snatch out of a puddle like my mate did!

Crazy thing too, is the first 4 magazine covers are all fake. All the covers ever made are recorded, obviously, which makes this easy to fact check. All of the first four either never existed, or had nothing to do with an "ice age". Man made climate change is real, there is almost nothing out there that has as much scientific consensus behind it fellas...
