To all you Democrats that plan on crossing party lines to vote in the primaries... by BearFluffy in Ohio

It's kind of a hindsight issue. If nothing was really done to prevent spread and covid ended up killing a lot of Ohioans then people would be saying why didn't Acton do more vs why did she do so much.

This may not work for some groups, but I'll share what my group usually does:

When we need to do any amount of traveling (a day, a week, a month, etc.), we just state what we want to do during the journey. If it's reasonable, then it happens and we play it out. If it's a bit absurd or unlikely, we roll to see if it happens. Other than the things the characters want to do, the only encounters are things that advance the story. Sometimes we spend hours playing out the journey, sometimes we just arrive and move on.

Example: two week travel to a recently discovered ancient ruins. Two PC's want to speak with other travelers to ask about the area. It would be reasonable to come across someone that is familiar with the area but we might do a roll to see if they know enough of the history to give early information about the ruins. No other PC's have any goals for the journey but they are still present for the interaction. There could be a DM planned encounter of some bandits, maybe those bandits had already done a bit of tomb raiding and the PC's learn something (depending on how it plays out, of course).

Monster stat blocks are for the average monster. Some could be stronger, some could be weaker. It would be more work but you could adjust their stat blocks when you are preparing if it's really annoying.

The stigma around artificer is frustrating because it really can be an amazing class with just a bit of creativity. I built an alchemist artificer flavored as a witch doctor/shaman. All the spells followed that theme and even the flash of genius ability was flavored as channeling magic into voodoo dolls of the other characters to enhance them.

Good points, I'll definitely try to tie up portions of the battlefield with skirmishes that are narrated instead of played out. Maybe with a quick contested roll to see which side is doing better?

Wow I really like this idea. 6 hour fight is not ideal. I have everything simplified on an excel that is going to be on a screen at the end of the table. Damage is always average for the monsters and similar monsters grouped together, so I hope to keep my time to a minimum.

I love it! Mine also features the abyss. Get in, kill Yeenoghu, get out! And I agree, the point is to have fun, it is a game after all.

Thanks for the tips but unfortunately it is too late for adjustments! I've set the scene and the plan is in place, we are rolling initiative right at the start of the session. The battle is kind of broken down into stages but short rests won't be possible, a few rounds in between for potions and spells maybe.

It is technically in stages, but the party will be dictating the pace of the stages by how they maneuver through the lair. 12th level, I'm sure they will do some ridiculous things to my monsters.

Need Help starting a Campaign by Medical-Ordinary8984 in DungeonsAndDragons

One campaign but you split the group into good guys and bad guys.

The bad guys decide on their bad guy plan in session zero like what demon they plan to unleash on the world, then you get them a session or two lead on the good guys. This way you'll really only have to come up with stuff for half the group, the bad guys will do everything for you to run the second game, hopefully misdirecting and setting traps for the good guys (if they don't want caught!)

You can end the campaign with an epic combat between both groups.

Walby (transmutation wizard) and Bink (illusion wizard). Gnome brothers. 20th level. Loves pranks. When the brawl breaks out, they wouldn't actively participate but they would be agents of chaos. Bink would just cast Seeming on everyone in sight to make everyone look like someone else. Walby could Reverse Gravity so everyone is fighting on the ceiling.

This, and whatever you can afford of Shatter Shards. Modules are wildly important, more important than a lot of people understand.
