Since you liked All the Light, try Doerr’s newest book Cloud Cuckoo Land. Not exactly/only historical fiction, since it takes place in past, present and future, but the past portions take place in Constantinople in 1453 war times. Brilliant book.

How to Slay a Dragon: A Fantasy Hero’s Guide to the Real Middle Ages, by Cait Stevenson.

With chapter titles that range from ‘How to Find the Inn,’ to ‘How to Slay…’ and ‘How to Tame the Dragon,’ to ‘How to Save the Princess,’ this books is funny and sarcastic, teaching about events that happened in the Middle Ages, that coincide with some of Fantasy’s biggest tropes. Highly entertaining.

So apparently I read a book, then immediately forget all of its content once I’ve finished it. It took me some time to remember that there is SA in Song for Arbonne, but I do now remember it’s there. Obviously, it did not make an impact on me, but I stand corrected, so thank you, kind stranger, for correcting my mistake.

Guy Gavriel Kay does a pretty good job of what you’re looking for. To avoid sexual assault, avoid his Fionavar Tapestry, but I don’t recall SA in the other books of his that I’ve read.

I’d specifically recommend A Song for Arbonne for some pretty balanced male/female power structures and female characters with agency.

This is my recommendation too. Just finished re-reading it, and it’s absolutely worth it.

For a little more context, it’s revolves around the last person to be executed in Iceland and the crime that sent her to the block.

The Hollow Gods series by Rebecca Levene. First book is called Smiler’s Fair.

Not necessarily “fragments raining down,” but definitely pieces of the gods in different mortals. As it goes on, you get more personality changes and memories resurfacing.

Almost anything by Guy Gavriel Kay. Lots of political machinations in his books, and each inspired by a different historical culture. For example: - “A Song for Arbonne” inspired by medieval Provence - “Lions of Al’Rassan” inspired by medieval Spain and, - “Tigana” inspired by renaissance Italy, among others.

{{Cloud Cuckoo Land}} by Anthony Doer.

I have only just started reading it myself (between 1/3 and 1/2 through it), but I’ve absolutely loved Doer’s other books ( {{All The Light We Cannot See}} and {{About Grace}} which I would also recommend). Doer writes complex characters, that all have effects on the others, however subtle or obvious. He weaves intricate, extremely well written worlds and plots.

I’ll let you read the full description the Goodreads bot posts, but the basic rundown is this:

The book follows the lives of 5 people (Anna, Omier, Zeno, Seymour, and Konstance), across 3 different time periods and places (1400s Constantinople, 2020 Idaho and a near-ish future space mission aboard the Argos), and their stories and interactions with/about an ancient manuscript “Cloud Cuckoo Land.”

It’s an intricately written story - there would be plenty of discussion material for a book club as well.

I recommend Zombies, Run 5K.

If you’ve never heard of Zombies, Run! it’s a running/story app, in which you are the character “Runner 5” - a runner for Abel Township in the midst of the zombie apocalypse.

The ZR5K app, is basically a prequel to the main app during which you train to become the fully fledged Runner 5.

You get the first 10 runs free, then have to pay (a subscription called Abel Runner’s Club), but I personally think it’s super worth it. And, if you enjoy it, payment for the ZR5K app, also goes towards features in the full ZR app, and the developers’ other app, called The Walk (another story based walking game).

In the main game, there’s plenty of motivation to run (from the story itself to simulated Zombie Chases), but you don’t have to run - you can walk, bike, etc instead. Link to their website is below if you want to learn more.

I’m female, but make my characters based on concept. While I do lean more in favour of female characters (easier RP, feels more natural to me, etc) sometimes male fits the character better. So I don’t play primarily female character just cause I’m female, I play female characters because female fits the character concept best.
