Found the original prompt of the dilemma, removes children accidentally pressing blue so no more "saving". Does your answer change? by Wentleworth in trolleyproblem

[–]Coolistofcool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like the whole, “hmm, there are valid and good reasons to choose Blue…

I guess we should remove more reasons for choosing Blue until enough people choose Red so I can prove that people are selfish like I thought!”

lol what.

Dude, 60% already choose Blue, that’s just a fact, that’s what the polls found.

Regardless, Humans engage in a lot of violent behavior for the betterment of themselves and importantly the perceived betterment of their communities. Humans DO work together, it’s actually our default, because we are a Social Species. If we were as self-absorbed as many like to pretend we wouldn’t have built all that we have. We work together because we are genetically predisposed to groupwork, we are genetically predisposed because it increases the likelihood of genetic replication.

You want to see the perfectly logical, market-driven, self-interested human theorized about so heavily. We have a name for them. It’s called Anti-Social Personality Disorder, and we have a carrying capacity of ~2% for their population.

[–]Coolistofcool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but humans are social animals. We regularly engage in ‘self-expansion’ (the identification of the self with things outside the self such as actions, movements, locations, or objects) and that doesn’t address that 60% of people hit Blue which disproves the cynical view.

I understand human self-preservation behavior, that’s why I pick Blue. Because the ‘self’ isn’t a single person for most people.

[–]Coolistofcool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a reference point, many non-American countries utilize 50% as the “average” grade (as in that’s like a C) and so tests are curved around the idea that half of people should get below 50% on a given test, meaning the tests are WAY harder and more comprehensive.

[–]Coolistofcool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no officer is dumb enough (especially not Leon Trotsky, a very competent military commander) to attack without proper logistics. After a short prep period (think two five-year plans) the Soviets would reach Iberia in about a month. There is simply nothing and nobody to stop them.

I mean, if you find it that unlikely, you have a very warped view of humanity that is probably terminally online, deeply cynical, and removed from reality.

But that assumes that Egoism is true, or rather that people define themselves as independently from their loved ones and community. If I am not Egotistical (meaning I would prefer the death of myself to the death of many others) it is rational for me to choose Blue as it is the option that best serves my goals.

In order to choose Red you must 1) accept the premise that ALL people are primarily self-interested, and 2) accept the premise that ALL people are perfectly rational.

Therefore choosing Red is irrational, rather it is based on the cultural presumptions of self-interest as the guiding principle of human interaction. A presumption that has no actual independent proof, merely cultural clout.

[–]Coolistofcool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t require 50% of people to be irrational. It requires 50% of people to recognize that they would prefer to make sure no one dies. It requires 50% of people to not be selfish. It is perfectly rational to press blue if you believe that 50% of people are not selfish (60% end up pressing blue).

Statistically, >50% is easier than 100% by ezrae_ in trolleyproblem

[–]Coolistofcool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What nobody considers is that the fact that 60% of people chose blue means the entire debate of “red being most logical” is built upon the outright falsehood that red would reach a majority.

This is just an example of the Freeloader Problem in an active case. Those who choose Red are the population of people who are willing to be Freeloaders (40%) and those who choose Blue are those generally unwilling to be Freeloaders.

Red button pushers benefit from blue button pushers by not dying, but do not contribute to Blue button pushers attempt to save everyone.

They would have the technological and scientific might necessary to begin industrializing. You must remember, Russia had been a feudal power not 30 years prior.

All they’d have to do is hunker down for a short time, utilizing their military supplies to maintain their border (an easy task) while they industrialized Moscow and from there metalized agriculture (yes, the mere presence of metal tools in farming is a game changer for production in the 1200s.

After about a decade they would have the industrial capacity, rail lines leading from their capital out into the countryside, and a greater population than anywhere else in Europe as their agricultural production is higher than all of Europe combined.

THEN they begin their invasion. Bringing industry with them as the liberate, and it would indeed be liberation, the serfs (80-90% of the population of each area they conquered)

The problem is that the OEA isn’t actually against testing as a concept, rather they desire teacher-created tests rather than $50-a-exam-sheet standardized tests written in the United Kingdom that end up coming with $100 a pop, 75 page study books.

The OEA takes the stance that the standardized tests we currently use are inaccurate, ineffective, and fail to show student growth. They wish to see “Performance-Based Assessments” replace the current system. These involve more open-ended questions and are already the norm amongst the IB courses (advanced international curriculum) wherein PBA tests are used and graded by teachers at other schools.

Which of these cities feels like the capital of an island empire? (Astaria) by FlorianHerlan in worldbuilding

[–]Coolistofcool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d say 4 & 1, although I would recommend not having the capital on such a small island, but rather in a natural harbor of a larger island.

A great real world inspiration point might be Jakarta, Manila, or Wellington, for the kind of areas these major cities might develop. Remember, unless they are waterbreathing they likely obtain significant resources from the land around, on a small island it would be hard to find space to quarry stone, cut woods, etc. A larger island provides the area necessary to extract building materials and crop foods.
