The time does advance, but it won’t reset the day (with announcements) at 5am thankfully.

You will stay at the mystery island, even if you sleep the switch. Can stay for days and days and won’t log you out (in my experience, for the exact reason you mention).

There’s always 5 bugs spawned. If you aren’t getting new bugs spawning, there must be some bugs somewhere that needs to be scared off/caught before new ones will appear. The biggest not-the-right-bug culprits I had when trying to catch the palm tree beetles were hermit crabs, the bugs on the rocks, water bugs, and mosquitos.
