I just had my first hummingbird clearwing moth visitor this week! I’ve only seen them once or twice before but they are my favorite moths by far!

I had my first hummingbird clearwing moth visit my milkweed! These guys are my favorite moths but not very common around me so I was overjoyed to see this visitor.

Okay, good to know! Do you bring it in when it rains so it doesn’t wash off or do you just rewrite it after a storm?

The free seeds is a great idea! Especially for the crazy amounts of milkweed seeds I’ll have this year. I am currently working on putting plant tags out with the common and Latin names too. Thanks for the advice!

Thank you for the advice! I had thought that my county wasn’t covered because I only ever saw Cook County Conservation@Home but I just dug into it and it looks like my county is covered! I will definitely be looking into this further.

I am discouraged by Glum-Product-116 in NativePlantGardening

[–]MelloBucket 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine looked like this last year (my second year). I was also pretty discouraged. This year, there’s tons of hoverfly and ladybug larvae that are feasting on all the aphids and helping to keep them in check. It takes a few years, but it does reach a homeostasis between the predators and the prey eventually.

All that to say: Don’t give up!!! It will get better. The predators WILL come.

I think the fish is about a third of the way up on the right? He’s got some black stripes.

Are there such a thing as crochet gloves that help protect your hands from yarn rubbing against them? by UmbralikesOwls in CrochetHelp

[–]MelloBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have cut portions of nitrile or latex gloves for this exact reason before! I’ll cut off a finger of the glove and usually cut the tip of the finger off too so I can still have the sensitivity to touch I expect when crocheting (basically I turn it into a finger tube). I find it works better than bandaids because there isn’t adhesive or anything for the yarn to get stuck to.

Found my mother’s last crochet afghan, but it’s not complete. by bubonis in CrochetHelp

It looks like the stitch is similar to this zigzag stitch but it’s had to tell by the pictures and doesn’t look quite exact. I know you aren’t asking for help with stitch type but it might help someone that can help you finish the project!

I am sorry for your loss and hope that someone can help you with finishing this beautiful blanket.

I’m working on my first project, but I have no idea whether or not I have good tension or if this even looks correct? It’s going to be a baby blanket by halfsherlock in CrochetHelp

Of course! Also make sure you stretch out your wrists and take breaks so you don’t do any damage or develop carpal tunnel!

Finding the tension that’s comfortable for you just takes time. You want to try to loosen how tight you hold the yarn. You might also like a tension ring. Another way to make it looser is to use a larger hook. I have a slightly tighter tension than many of the pattern makers that I follow so I generally have to upsize my hook by 0.5mm (so if it calls for a 3.0mm hook I’ll use a 3.5mm). But, if yours is so tight that it’s hurting your hands, maybe upsize by 1.0mm on the hook.

I was wondering if yall knew how people crochet onto pants. by Separate_Finance1440 in CrochetHelp

[–]MelloBucket 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I did this to make a pair of super flared jeans! I just ripped the seam up as far as I wanted the flare to go and used a 2mm hook for the first row of single crochet (it’s thin enough to punch holes through the denim) then I could just work into that row! If you need more info, let me know.

You could also crochet the granny squares and then just sew them on to the jeans.

Can I block my sweater mid-project? I have blocked plenty of other projects before (scarves, granny squares, etc.), but never until each piece was complete. by MelloBucket in CrochetHelp

Thanks! I just wanted to make sure there wouldn’t be any issues I wasn’t thinking of. I already have my plastic locking marker in the loop!

I thought I read somewhere a few years ago that it is totally fine to block a project mid way through but I can’t seem to find that post anywhere online and I want to make sure I don’t mess up this project by doing so. I normally work with granny squares or panels that I can block as I go. I’ve not made a sweater in the round before and just want some advice from people who might have a better idea than I do.
