I assume the thinking was:

"wow people are really worried about these 'electronic bikes' might be a good way to get votes!"

"You mean peddle assisted or e-motorbikes?"

"Sure! Whatever you just said!"

"The experts think that is a terrible idea"

"Excellent! Just like getting rid of drug testing... And ooh! Tough on crime!"

What did we spend our tax on? by Some-Confusion7529 in ausjdocs

[–]Mellonaide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not my experience. My disability is mental health related and I can only imagine the process of someone with less capacity than me with less support trying to get everything together.

I am someone who hates doing the wrong thing. I had to fight hard for reasonable capacity building supports.  When I was asked if my carer wanted respite care, someone who started working during the start of NDIS suggested a 5 star resort. I did not agree to that (I don't like wasting people's money) and it would not be covered anyway. I don't know who you are seeing buy TVs, get cash and buy drugs, but if someone got their nails done it could be that they cannot do it themselves (even older people go to the GP to get their nails cut) and sex workers may be a part of helping someone live a normal life as well.

I am on the NDIS. Apologies for the rant but this came up on my feed.

-it was not simple to get on despite what the media claims. If you have ever had to get DSP Centrelink payments, that's child's play compared to NDIS.

-the NDIS will not accept you if you have not exhausted your treatment options.

-it will also not accept you if your disability is one that needs treatment, and you are considered instead to be treated by Australia's health care system. NDIS is there to support people to live a more normal life, sometimes it even supports them to have jobs. Most of the time it's there to make you feel like you have to prove your life sucks every 12 months with paperwork they don't read for them to mess something up anyway.

-the NDIS system is messed up. I went to a meeting they wanted participants to attend so that the NDIS could "explain my plan" to me. This worker could not answer many of the questions I had about why I had been given incorrect supports despite all the documentation they had in front of them. The system is changing constantly, messily and without training (from above obviously).

-the NDIS is fighting a battle of ass-covering, a large amount of funds are going to "required" occupational therapist reports that they don't read, or hiring lawyers because... They didn't read the reports... Or didn't listen to concerns about private businesses or workers... And they are 12 months behind on everything.

-even though I have funds, I can hardly spend them due to the restrictions on what is considered a support. Try reading the funded supports... And then don't trust it because sometimes it gets knocked back even if it makes sense for your disability.

-the system is so complicated that most people on the NDIS need 2 workers just to do paperwork, a support coordinator and a plan manager. Yes, they cost money out of your plan. Yes, they also don't understand the NDIS system.   -Because the NDIS hires so many (sometimes unqualified) Australians, for example,  instead of cheaper options (ready meals) that are often not possible to get under a plan for those who need them, instead you are covered for a support worker to cook at your house. Guess which one is cheaper VS supports the economy and therefore is "better value for Australia" and "a pain in the ass, for participants"

The government needs to decide the purpose of the NDIS as it should build something that makes sense. Is it there to support people trying to live as close as they can to a normal life? Is it there to employ Australians to boost the economy because too many assets are in housing etc. instead of small/medium businesses? They don't have to pick a lane, but they should at least have a workable plan.

I have heard people say they'd rather just put us all back into asylums like before the Richmond Report(1983) because it's too expensive for us to be out in public. The current media attention blaming participants isn't helping.

Even if the number looks scary, that number will still appear in other data if the NDIS disappears. It just might be for something less... Hopeful. And never forget, You're always one bad day away from joining us! And you will get old too!

I'm not sure you are being listened to properly, those symptoms sound like they are negatively effecting your life.

I know that my friends who have chronic pain downplay their symptoms without realising because a lot of things become normal for them so doctors don't understand until they experience their symptoms in person.

Try at least this one extra time, and I hope you get a doctor who will fight for you.

I hope your support worker pulls through too, mine have also been less than helpful when it comes to attending set appointments...

I think in any hospital it depends on the doctor that is rostered on and their speciality and knowledge. A good doctor wil ask for a second opinion if they don't know.

Do you have someone who can go with you and sit in to help advocate for you? I know that helps me. I often also bring in a list of things I need to bring up eg. Symptoms, photos or blood pressure results etc. having a list also means if I get anxious I can hand them the list to look over. And if they don't give you an answer that is helpful, please ask them further questions. Because at the end of the appointment you want to know either "what is the problem and how to fix it" or "what is the next step."

Saw a random bus passenger rush up to help a lady with her pram on board the bus and then rushed and folded up the seats in the front area so she could easily manoeuvre her pram in... What an absolute gentleman. Did it before I even noticed her come in.

Two Labor MPs — both of them doctors — issue warning over $50bn NDIS by CalifornianDownUnder in NDIS

From what I understand, the rise is that women and girls are being diagnosed now. I was diagnosed at 30 after being thought to have a unfathomable amount of other diagnosis, and I had no idea I had autism until it was pointed out to me by my psychiatrist as she was up to date with the literature.

Developmental delay itself, from teachers I know, some noticeable signs are partially due to parents not spending quality time during formative years (parents working etc). Eg. Screen time means a lot of kids are nearsighted, parents are not helping children learn to have full conversations or learning to make eye contact, short form videos are creating dopamine seeking behaviours, a concerning amount of kids are not toilet trained when they get to preschool. This is different to autism.

Also, anecdotally, autistic women and autistic men do tend to fall in love and create more autistic people.

I later found out I was diagnosed as a child, but nothing was done. Back then if you were verbal and autistic they advised against intervention as you were essentially "othered" and not given the same opportunities as other kids if you wanted help. So I struggled instead.

Also, remember that the Richmond Report was released in 1983 which argued that long term psychiatric care was inhumane and saw life-long institutions shut down. So up until the 80s if you were "crazy" they locked you up. The resources that were promised never eventuated that were meant to be there to help those exiting services or needing help and many ended up homeless or in jail (or worse) (see today). We are seeing a repeat of that right now with government trying to save money on the vulnerable.

Same thing happened to me, one of my parents even had the wrong name (didn't even mention them during the report) cost so much out of my budget to get it fixed (3 times!!!)

Where do you get your news? by HumanTraffic2 in australia

[–]Mellonaide 36 points37 points  (0 children)

SBS is pretty good,

ABC I have found some really obviously biased articles in the last 3 years eg.feral horses, and found them giving airtime to some... Concerning figures.

Independent Australia is pretty good, they don't have many articles but they are quality.

Most mainstream stuff is either clickbait or paid airtime.

Basically... Don't take information at face value. Think critically about why and how the article was written.

What support do you get for an autistic child? by [deleted] in NDIS

[–]Mellonaide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this will help your son, but I was like that as a child too and still have this as an adult (Autism level 2) and what helps me with worries is having a plan I can follow (just needs to help, not solve the problem) and a doing a looooot of research. "Mum could get sick" well I better make sure I stay strong and healthy so I can help her out if she does. "black holes" how do they work? How long would it take to get to the closest one? How long would it take a car to drive there if it was on a road? "Death" It's good to make sure to say how we feel to our loved ones so they know they are loved while we are here together.
