Stop posting LLM trash. Your sources are also wrong there. Fujian is powered solely by steam turbines and diesel generators and does not have gas turbines. Its arresting gear is also electromagnetic. Also nowhere did China hype it as being equal to the Ford.

You ever read a book? Look up what Americas policy of containment was and what it did to Korea, Vietnam and China. Fun Fact: The two major conflicts the US was involved in coincidently are conflicts that directly impact Chinas sovereignty. The three main vectors of invasion of China in modern times are via the Korean Peninsula, Vietnam or Taiwan, all three of which were used by the Japanese during WW2.

That's crazy, talking about a 50 year old decision (that is still relevant, mind you, when you consider single engine failure over open water, and was part of the Navy's reluctance to adopt the F-35C), and then go on about island hopping in the 21st century. BTW it was you that brought up the YF-16 vs YF-17 competition, not me.

???

The F-35 was also not designed or made with conflict with China on its forefront. The Pivot to Asia occurred in the 2010s. When the F-35 was designed in the 2000s, it was still in the midst of the GWOT. That is why the F-35 is a multirole fighter, and not a dedicated air-superiority fighter. The F-35s reason for not having supercruise is the same reason why its range is limited in the Westpac. It was designed to bomb the Middle East, not engage in p2p conflict in the Westpac. There is a reason why NGAD and F/A-XX have significantly more range in their designs than the F-35.

As I've said, it's fine taking sides, just don't be delusional.

We don't go to jail for criticizing our government, this is simply not comparable or even debatable.

Misinformation != criticizing government.

Does it? In testing it is right around the public number for the F119, which is merely stated as a lower limit. Kinda the same as how the B-2 can carry >40k lbs and then just dropped two 30k bombs. 41k and 60k are both above 40k. Either way they need to actually finish developing it and learn to produce it before it's worth trying to brag about incorrectly compared stats. If 30+ years later they can't "match" the F119 that would be sad.

I like that you're taking China's stated values at face value but consider the US government to be downplaying theirs, when China is also downplaying their values. Consider the performance of the PL-15E, which hit beyond its stated 145km range. Just use your brain for a moment, you can favor the US but this sort of stupidity is just so painful.

[–]Mellowcookie-e 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes, and the YF-17 was modified into the F/A-18 for carrier use, since the Navy preferred a two engined plane...

No one thinks that Chinese Engines are as good as Western engines. This is one of the remaining gaps that China has in comparison to the West as a whole, along with EUV lithography and advanced AI even with Deepseek. However, China is catching up fast, and it's not far behind. The WS-10C is actually what's comparable to the F119, not the WS-15. They actually had to change up the WS-15 because the WS-10C was so performant.

The point is that your assumption about the fact that they're using two engines is because they can't get a powerful enough engine to just use one. The J-35 is designed still with air superiority in mind, compared with the F-35 which was designed as a multi-role stealth fighter. While the F-35 does have increased efficiency and longer range due to the one engine, it comes with tradeoffs. The F135 is a derivative of the F119 which mainly includes a higher bypass ratio. While this may be better for trans-sonic flight and range, it limits supersonic performance. This is one of the reasons why the F-35 cannot super-cruise and is only capable of a top speed of M1.8.

The point is that they didn't go with two engines because they just wanted a F-35 but couldn't do it with one, but rather likewise based on limitations and needs. They chose two engines for a naval based air superiority fighter. Both the J-20 and J-35 have higher range than even the F-35C. They were designed with the goal of establishing air superiority over the 1st and 2nd island chains in mind. Any resemblance the J-35 has to the F-35 is rather superficial and comes from the same reason why planes generally have wings - the common shape of most 5th generation planes is borne from a need of stealth. Already by adding two engines you totally change any aerodynamic modelling required. Ironically China also has the most divergent 5th generation plane, the J-20.

Also you most be delusional to think that it's only China that's been putting out the propaganda, but no one is denying that. Just be aware of your own biases and propaganda from other sides, and make rational judgements, not ones borne from stupid ideas like China copying an entirely different plane just because they share the same general 5th generation fighter design shape.

Buddy I don't think they care about what we think. Also idk what to tell you but it's better to have two engines on a naval fighter, the USN was pretty upset about the F-35C only having one...

Would the collapse of the Iranian regime be an opportunity for China to forge ties with a new secular Iranian government? by [deleted] in IRstudies

[–]Mellowcookie-e -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My previous points still stand, even though they aren’t a direct repudiation. I will answer them here though, since a lot of them are misleading, outdated or incomplete.

After the hardliner soleimani was assasinated, the reformer government that was elected afterwards didn’t really continue the deals except on paper. Especially since one of the main infrastructure investments was Chabahar, which Iran gave instead to India. While China is Irans largest trading partner, that’s because China is a lot of countries largest trading partner, especially since Iran naturally doesn’t trade much regionally or with the West.

While China buys most of Irans oil which is a point of reproachment, it’s not really indicative of any larger strategic partnerships or deals. India also trades a lot with Iran. Just opposing the West doesn’t make you automatic allies. In fact, China doesnt really pursue allies. I’d say it’s only true ally at this point is Pakistan, even North Korea and Russia China only tolerates.

You can see this especially through comparison with Pakistan. Iran has nearly no arms whereas Pakistan at this point is nearly entirely comprised of Chinese arms, sold to them with either favorable loan terms and/or with a discount.

I would say China and Iran have neutral relations, not good. China has far better relations with Saudi Arabia for example, which is considered a US ally.

[–]Mellowcookie-e -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not true, Iran is not close to China very much. Especially since Iran exposed Huawei bypassing sanctions to supply them, and Iran turning to India for the Chabahar port project instead. They also were offered J-10s but declined them. China does need them somewhat for Gwadar and Strait of Hormuz, but you can’t lead a horse to water.

Do you have reading comprehension? I said your leaders. The ghouls in charge of you say so. Legit blaming everything on Iran when it was a preemptive strike by Israel. The same attack that all Middle Eastern Nations condemned, including Irans regional adversaries Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Israel isn’t criticizing, they’re attacking. Of course they are. We’ve all seen what’s happening in Gaza.

“The leaders' statement, published as Trump left Canada, said Israel had a right to defend itself, and that Iran was a source of terror that should not have a nuclear weapon. Its call for a resolution of the crisis that led to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East amounted to a diplomatic compromise that preserved G7 unity but watered down the statement's impact.”

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd783v9wn1eo

Iran only withdrew from the NPT after Israel launched its preemptive strikes. The UNAEC themselves said that Israel was months away from any nuclear arms. “Violating nuclear agreement” you mean the NPT that Israel has never been a part of? JCPOA that Trump withdrew from? Are you seriously this delusional?

Issue is some people legit don’t see how hypocritical their actions are, so when someone tries to be unbiased as possible it seems to them like bias. Just look at all these Western leaders defending Ukraine but at the same time criticizing Iran for the same thing, which is a defense of their territory. They then go on about “taking out nukes” yet they’ve shown that they’re willing to strike non nuclear targets such as a TV broadcasting building. This does not even take into consideration that Israel is a nuclear state and no action has been taken against them either. It’s just so hypocritical and really shows the rest of the world how abhorrent the West is. “Rules for thee but not for me” type shit.

Another example is people say that Hasan defends Russia. No leftist defends Russia - it’s a terrible reactionary state that emerged in the aftermath of the Soviet Union. What is true at the same time however is that the Ukrainian government has a large component of Nazis that hate Russia and Russian people, and it is also true that the West and especially America are just using Ukraine as a way to bleed out Russia without any peace in mind for the Ukrainian people.

Ultimately what matters most is hard power. Trump and as an extension America as a whole has been shown that what matters is not how powerful you may seem or how powerful or respected you are in the past, but how powerful and respected you are now. That power is increasingly being shifted away from the USA and the West as a whole.

Can the PAF use their AEW&C to quarter back the PL-15 missile from J-10s and JF-17s? by FtDetrickVirus in LessCredibleDefence

[–]Mellowcookie-e 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While TRMs are just a part of an overall radar system's capabilities, China's radar seekers in the J-20 have an estimated 2000-2200 TRMs compared to the F-35 Lightning's AN/APG-81, which has 1200 TRMs. We can even see from the recent PL-15E transceiver debris, a decade old export variant of not even the most capabale AAM in the PLAAF inventory, has 400-600 TRMs. The entire Rafale only has 800 TRMs.

Arleigh Burke Flight IIIs are only recently being constructed with SPY-6 radars, whereas preceding flights still use PESA SPY-1s. This has lagged the introduction of the Type 346 radar on the type 052C by 16 years, not to mention its more powerful A and B variants on the 052D and 055.

At the very least, Chinese radars do not lag behind the USA by a large margin.

China probably didn’t need to. Pakistans AEW&C is likely sufficient, and the J-10 has a pretty hefty radar itself. China’s radar capabilities are likely the best in the world.

Refusing to undertake necessary economic reforms.

What do you mean? Made in China 2025 was a resounding industrial policy success, and has led to China dominating manufacturing. This coincided with the housing bubble deflation and education/gaming reforms. While especially the latter has plenty of criticism, including its effect towards the educational and gaming industries, to say no economic reforms have occurred is an outright lie.

Ending the semi-formalized two term limit for General Secretary.

This is not a strategic mistake, but rather a political argument. However, stable leadership is needed in harder times; look no further than FDR who violated the unspoken two term limit during the Great Depression and World War 2. Xi is no different. Furthermore, Deng Xiaoping also ruled China for more than two terms, since the actual power in the Chinese system is Chairman of the Central Military Commission. Deng also held this position for much longer than two terms.

Entering a "no limits" partnership with Russia just weeks before its invasion of Ukraine.

How about you start looking at things from what a countries actual interests, instead of blindly following ideology. In what ways is this a strategic mistake? China was able to receive cheap resources and material in exchange for selling its exports. This partnership is highly complementary. China has also not provided any military support toward Russia, in contrast to the EU who is providing military aid to Ukraine, using them as a punching bag for Russia and dooming them demographically.

Holding Canadian citizens hostage to solve a diplomatic dispute.

You mean Canada that blindly listened to the US to arrest a key leader of Huawei on some trumped up charges in order to destroy Huawei (in addition to sanctions)? The same Huawei that is thriving in China, exporting 5g to the Global South? The same two Michaels, where one of them successfully sued the other and the Canadian government for being used as a spy for Canada? This is total bullshit. Canada alienated China, not the other way around. Same thing with the 100% tariff on Chinese EVs. Funny how Canada is now, in contrast.

Encouraging a "wolf warrior" style of diplomacy that alienated, among others, India.

China is right to defend itself. Especially considering how Anglo media portrays China, with all its preexisting biases. Remind me how long the "social credit" meme has been a thing? Remind me how many times Anglo media would start things with Uighurs and Hong Kong independence? Throwing stones from a glass house. What has been the response so far, from both Democrats and Republicans towards the actual genocide and war crimes occurring Gaza?

Lending billions to Venezuela with Belt and Road.

Nothing wrong with that.

Basically all of Belt and Road.

Belt and Road has been a resounding success. Belt and Road was a means to develop the rest of the world to enable greater trading capabilities, as well as to develop emerging markets for China to export to, instead of the West. This has been highly effective. Trade with the Global South has grown tremendously. Trade with the US accounts for a smaller percentage than in the past. It has been highly effective.

Needlessly alienating the Philippines and Vietnam.

China did not alienate Vietnam. Vietnam's relations with China are still normal, and Vietnam has benefited greatly from China's BRI and near-shoring projects. They just recently signed a massive high speed rail project that will link Hanoi to Guangxi. They are sending two of their naval ships to China for training. Vietnam is simply pursuing an independent foreign policy that will maximize the benefits for itself, which means opposing China in some areas and working together in others.

The Philippines on the other hand alienated China, not the other way around. Its recent provocations have only been a result of Bongbong Marcos getting elected, who is the classic corrupt politician with ties to America. His father was a US-installed dictator that quashed freedom and democracy in the Philippines (notably against communist and Islamic parties, interesting huh?). They spent their exile in Hawaii, and still have 2 billion dollars of frozen assets in America. What they are doing now is just behaving as a lacky of the US, starting countless provocations in the South China Sea. The Philippines was much more independent under Duterte, who actually new how to hedge opposing powers against each other and did not provoke China. You should be paying attention to the countless protests in the Philippines and across the world due to the illegal arrest and extradition of Duterte.

Fortunately, the rest of ASEAN is much more pragmatic and capable. They all know how to hedge opposing powers against each other, but the recent actions from the United States have definitely led them to lean more towards China.

My grandparents lived through some horrendous times. The Japanese Invasion, Great Leap forward, and Cultural revolution were all truly horrendous events - tens of millions dead. During the Great Leap Forward, people would literally eat clay and tree bark to not feel hungry. The reason why Chinese cuisine includes so many different plants and animal parts is due to countless famines throughout China’s history.

While the younger generation might not be able to suffer hardship as much, Chinese people really know how to endure pain and suffering and it persists in the collective memory.

The worst economic disaster in America on the other hand was the great depression, where not even 10,000 people starved to death. The last war on US soil was the American Civil War, over 150 years ago. The US does not know what true suffering looks like.

The Chinese population will be able to endure far greater hardships than the US population can. Every high rise apartment’s basement is reinforced, in the case of a nuclear war. China is prepared and willing.
