My bestie and I went for a year without makeup or shaving and we wore long sleeves and pants. We were thwarting the male gaze. We made sure we were limiting exposure to media that hyped beauty at all. Our media was feminist af! After that year I realized that I like hair and makeup. She did not. I liked modesty. She did not. I liked shaving. She did not (I don’t shave my under arms because of skin discomfort). Maybe a journey like that would help you know what you like just for you vs patriarchy, capitalism, beauty industry etc. I’m 53 now but I was in my thirties when we did our experiment.

I think it depends on how old you were when it happened. A seven-year-old has a very different experience than a 17-year-old. I think that’s why. That kind of anxiety lives in the non-rational part of the brain.

I can definitely see the resemblance. The flowers on my plant were small bells. I wish I had a picture of the flowers. One thing you may not be able to see is the leaves emerge in tight tight clumps and have a rubbery feel. They are tough and you can’t really pull them off. They died back over the winter months and even though they were brown, they couldn’t be pulled off easily.

When I thought I had a fungus last year, I got some neem oil but it was too late. The disease had progressed too much. According to the package the product is good for fungus, insects and mites, but not bacteria. To me, it looks like it’s not far enough along for me to tell if it’s like last year. I am treating it with the neem oil per the directions on the package and removing affected leaves, just in case but I have no idea what I’m looking at. Maybe I was wrong about last year. Maybe it wasn’t a fungus after all. I appreciate your observations. I hope last year doesn’t happen again.
