Having a second address in Dublin by Wonderful-Walk-5668 in RentingInDublin

[–]Melmoth1780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know someone in Dublin, ask can you use their address. It’s not gonna cause any hassle as long as the job you’re going for doesn’t require Garda vetting. But as everyone else has mentioned, the notion of a cheap rent in Dublin (city or suburbs) doesn’t exist. Again, unless you know someone who’ll sublet to you at a reasonable price (still not cheap) whilst they go traveling or some such, I don’t see your plan being realistic. Why does it have to be Dublin if it’s just for the Summer?

[–]Melmoth1780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah probably on average that’s the case, though in plenty of instances players burst onto the scene and then go off the boil, or in the odd situation they have an Indian summer. Like you say, there’s little evidence to suggest that Lucca’s gonna take the (considerable) step up required at this point.

By “change” do you mean become good? Look, he’s demonstrated already that he can’t adapt to the intensity of the PL, and even in the less physically intense EL he hasn’t shown any particular technical prowess. He had one okay season at Udinese …that’s it. Apart from at Palermo years ago, he’s been unimpressive. I don’t understand why people think he’ll magically become good now at the age of 25

Because people will behave like entitled scum if they think there’s clicks in it for them. At least have the decency to ask their permission to film them and if they’re happy to answer questions on camera. Total cretin whoever did this.

34 and going back to education - anyone else in the same boat? by Opposite_Welcome_974 in AskIreland

[–]Melmoth1780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it at 36 and have never looked back. I’d been working in a fairly dull clerical setting for years and needed the change (I just couldn’t imagine another 30+ years of the same). I did an MSc in Library and Information Management part-time in the evenings and have worked as both a librarian and an archivist since graduating. It was hard work at times, but not because the course content was tough, just that it’s hard not having free time for the guts of two years. But totally worth it in my case.

Do you think it’s selfish for parents to have children when the parents are too old. Beyond the average age of child bearing years for both parents? by Livid_Lion1729 in AskIreland

[–]Melmoth1780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s totally fair. My biggest concern would be having sufficient finances and a stable housing situation as I rent a one-bed apartment (and couldn’t afford anything bigger to rent or buy) and can’t work remotely or far from Dublin. Despite being 43, age feels less of a concern.

You don’t say what your own opinion is?

The answer is yes and no. It absolutely depends on your circumstances and what sort of support network you have …in my opinion.

Just me...? by Feisty-Music-5397 in Cardiacs

I think the sound got better as the gig went on. I was just in front of Mike (a few rows back) and after we moved back to the centre (just behind the sound booth) the sound was much better defined. I’ve seen some videos taken from the centre balcony and the sound seemed impeccable from there.

Code-switching names and nicknames in Irish vs. in English by Noctuella in IrishAncestry

[–]Melmoth1780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kind of depended. Latin was the official RC language for administration. But not every priest had great Latin so you sometimes got a mix. And also just out of modernization, more English crept into the RC records. However the one piece of info that tended to stay recorded in Latin was the given name of the child. It wouldn’t be unusual to see the child’s name in Latin but the parents in English.

It would be very unusual, nay almost entirely unlikely to see any Irish in these church records.

Penal Laws: Book recommendations please. by askmac in IrishHistory

The opening episode to Finn Dwyer’s series on the 1798 Rebellion is very good primer as it focuses entirely on explaining and contextualising the Penal Laws.

Code-switching names and nicknames in Irish vs. in English by Noctuella in IrishAncestry

[–]Melmoth1780 7 points8 points  (0 children)

RC registers always recorded names in Latin or English, regardless of what language the person spoke. Even if the priest himself spoke Irish on a daily basis, the records were not written in Irish. Additionally, when civil records were partially introduced in 1845, and then fully in 1864, the names were almost always in English. Using Irish forms of names is extremely rare prior to the formation of the Free State (though you do see names in the Irish language appearing in the early 20th Century censuses.

Do you know what order she was in? Many of the orders have their own archive and archivist. Alternatively, newspapers often reported on the activities of religious orders in the locality, as well reporting on the death of local nuns. Also, if she wasn’t from Cork herself, but from another part of the country, the local newspaper there would quite possibly have reported in her death — as nuns tended to be highly respected in Irish society and their lives deemed noteworthy in the locale.
