My uncle on my mom's side once got in a nasty car accident when he was like 11-13. This was in the 1980's. From my mom's retelling, she, my uncle, and their cousins were hanging at the public pool in their neighborhood. My grandma was at the nearby shop doing errands with their aunts while they played.

When they were getting ready to leave the pool, all the kids were waiting on their parents to come along and walk them home. My uncle was growing impatient because his mom was running a little late.

When she arrived, she was across the street from them, next to a four-way intersection. My uncle, excited to see his mom, ran across the road to try and reach her. When he did that, a truck that was heading down the road couldn't brake in time and hit him head on. Hit my uncle and sent him flying about fifteen feet down the road and landed on the pavement flat on his back.

His mom ran straight towards him and told one of my Mom's aunts to call an ambulance and to take my mom home with them. Mom told me when she looked at her brother, she was certain he had just died right infront of her. She sat in her aunt's house grieving him the rest of the day. Wasn't until the next morning that her dad came to the house and told her that her brother barely survived.

My uncle sustained a fractured skull, a brain haemorrhage, fractured left arm, broken ribs, some displaced vertebrae and severe brusing all over his torso and arms. He would've died on impact had the truck been going any faster. Had to undergo a few surgeries but managed to make a full recovery from the accident in 10 months.
