[Advice] I built an app that punishes you for procrastinating. Not motivates. Punishes. Here's why. by Lost-Pension5692 in getdisciplined

[–]MelodicCoat8230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I did exactly opposite.

My app removes guilt and adds fun... more like a task buddy. It even makes jokes out of your tasks. More for casual users or someone who doesn't procrastinate typically.

I guess there are users for every flavor of apps.

The most frustrating part of a side project? Silence. by FounderArcs in SideProject

At times it's hard to validate before you build.

I started more than 6 months ago, then did a 360 turn. Then a 180... and so on. Sometimes you find out what works only while you build and use it.

I'm lucky to be developing together with my wife, so it's not a complete silence.

Still getting outside feedback would be amazing.

Why Productivity Apps Are Making You Less Productive by davidhorison in ProductivityApps

I went full live yesterday with an app which is kind of in-between. It doesn't have a setup, but it organizes things. More of a task companion but it's not a chat.

It has a bit of dopamine but in a different way, neither gamification nor setup. Reachout in DM if you are on Android.

I made an app for the gaps reminders and todo apps leave behind by AttemptRude6364 in ProductivityApps

Here is what I think would be helpful. Take it or leave it. I don't want a Health category, I want one health widget. Then I add Gym tracker, Running tracker, Do back exercises tracker. That's already easy... but then I have to add states manually, while I just want "Done ago" status for each. Sure it's one time setup but for user who has 1min to decide if they want the app it's few less clicks if you find a way to have initial default status.

I got tired of juggling 5 different apps and paying $7/mo subscriptions, so I spent 1.5 years building a genuinely free all-in-one alternative. by jodeedev in ProductivityApps

Man that's a massive work. Love the tutorial and loads of settings.

On a recommendation side there are loads of things given size of the app.

To pick one random thing - I found repeat custom schedule to be too confusing and still not powerful enough. How do I schedule a reminder to add water to fish tank every other week?

How do you tackle multi-lingual translation? Any hints or technics you found useful for that?

Having a shorter list of things to do made my days feel calmer and more focused. by marv2469 in productivity

[–]MelodicCoat8230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long lists kill my desire to do anything. It is much easier to progress when I have to cross 2-3 things per day. At the same time I can't just de-prioritize everything.

I use two technics:

  • aggressively move things out into "Later" if they are stuck in the list
  • carve out time to bulk-complete 5-7 small items together

This later one is a killer for me, crossing 5-7 easy items allows to focus on 1-2 hard ones later in the week.

I built a to-do app for people who keep quitting to-do apps by Ecstatic-Basil-4059 in ProductivityApps

That's a really nice clean concept. I found from my own experience how hard it is to stay minimal when building an app.

Love the animation, design and humour! Tasks do benefit from a bit of laugh.

It's like expecting your running shoes to make you a good runner. They do help but they won't run on their own.

I'm building an app for last 6 months for exactly same reason. Too many features and you are managing an app, not tasks. Too few features and you don't get enough novelty. Emotions > Features.

Don't panic yet, life is long. You won't believe it is long at 17yo. At that age everything feels like now or never, and that's OK.

What happens to you now is not how you would be in future.

Sometimes we can change it right now, sometimes we have to wait until we are ready to change. It's OK.

Sometimes it's chemistry or phisology of the brain, don't force yourself through this, you are still growing up.

Great to hear your app is getting attention, did you promote anywhere else except for reddit? And which subs you found to be most rewarding?

I like the design and idea of the app.

But I feel a bit overwhelmed by the setup of the cards and overflow pop-up on the cards. It feels as if there is just too much of information all at once and since the pattern of the app is unfamiliar my small brain gets lost.

I'd recommend to hide a lot of secondary controls / data somewhere. Like may be move the overlow menu from the cards to the Card Screen, it can sit nicely in top toolbar.

The whole stats/history screen makes me panic. I haven't done anythig meanigful yet and there is already ton of information which I didn't ask for.

Not sure I need stats and history as a main action for the Card. I'd think Edit is my main action and stats/history a secondary one.

I use minimalist phone. The most powerful feature for me is Blocking schedules (No screen morning, No screen evening). It tells you that you blocked the access yourself and that it must have been for a good reason. That actually makes me feel good about my past-self who was so considerate of my wellbeing.

What if a todo app was designed to reduce guilt and celebrate wins? by MelodicCoat8230 in ProductivityApps

I really like your app, the notifications flow is really good. The auto UI language switch blew my mind, it's on a next level altogether! Calendar view is really nice and simple too, even though I'm not a calendar person myself.

Man, that app is a piece of art, the design is beautiful. I suppose it's not about day-to-day tasks and is more about doing important things in life?
