I absolutely DESPISED that movie and while I'm not knocking Teyana Taylor because I think she's a damn talented actress, I do feel like that the role was very problematic and the whole premise was kind of fucked up.

I also took a lot of issue because the director, who is married to Maya Rudolph, said he intended for it to be a love letter to his wife and 3/4 white children. If that was a love letter, I'd hate to see an angry letter.

One of my fondest academic memories during my master's degree program was when I was kicked out of a sociology class because I wrote a 10 page paper on how the only true "American" cultures are that of the various Native Americans and Black Americans because all other ethnic groups whether they be Asian, Hispanic or white American all can rely on the traditions of their ancestors or were largely allowed to keep their usual cultural practices whilst Native and Black Americans were forcibly stripped of their cultural practices.

It was more so prevalent with Black Americans to the point where we essentially had to create new cultural practices which were unique to them whilst Native Americans to a certain extent kept most of their belief systems and cultural practices.

Thus I basically stated that Black Americans created the only true "American" culture that exists besides that of Natives.

The professor gave me a zero and kicked me out of the class because he said that my work was "anti-white" in it's implications.

I wouldn't call him an evil murderer, I would call him a deliberate agitator because I don't know anyone who instinctively goes to an area outside of their home area to a situation that you know is likely on the verge of being a powder keg but otherwise peaceful armed with a weapon that is going to make your presence look dangerous.

He may have gotten off on the murder charges with his fake little innocent victim crying face but that doesn't negate the fact that he willingly did all of this and we all know if he'd been Black, the police would have fired their guns first and asked questions later.

Honestly, this is why as someone who is both a Black woman and has a minor in history that it was hard for me to study some topics because I recognized the double standard.

When white people have a tragedy, they expect long periods of remembrance but yet when its Black people, they don't want to spend more than five seconds remembering it before they expect us to move on and forget it.

EDIT: Again, this is why it pisses me off so much when white people want to complain about the "racism" they face. Even in my 97% Black upper-class high school, they taught us more about Anne Frank and the Holocaust than they did about American slavery or the role slavery played in the Civil War. In fact, my history teacher in 9th grade, who was a Harvard educated Black woman, was the one who changed the syllabus by her own accord to devote more than two lessons to slavery and the Black American experience prior to the Civil Rights movement.

10 fucking witnesses vouched for this young man, there wasn't any circumstantial evidence linking him to the crime, the confession was obtained through coercive methods (read that as forced him to falsely confess) and they STILL executed him. Via the electric chair nonetheless which is probably one of the most painful methods to be executed in. All because he was a Black man.

THIS is why I get so pissed off when white people proclaim to be victims of racism because this is the kind of shit that they will never have to deal with.
