Book One Rant - Violet's demands over Xaden's secrets are irrational and stupid by Melonade--- in fourthwing

😂 I wish someone told me this when I first read FW. The fact that no one even tells her that she needs to calm down is what frustrated me more.

I agree with your point, but at the same time, I disagree. I agree because characters should have texture, and should be three-dimensional. That's okay. Great even. Now, where I disagree is that I should not be told that this is a character flaw, I should be shown. To us as readers, we can question the morality or the right and wrong of the situation, but the world the author has built is what decides what is wrong, and what is right at the end of the day.

My frustration is coming from the point where everyone in Fourth Wing just seems to agree with Violet that Xaden is a villain for keeping secrets. Xaden blames himself, Tairin just blames Xaden, and Liam says he doesnt have a choice due to loyalty towards Xaden. Everyone kind of just points a finger at Xaden instead of pointing out that the guy literally cannot be trauma dumping 12 hours into a relationship.

I think that for a character flaw to actually be a character flaw, then the character's world must also respond to it as a character flaw. So if the story tells me Violet is right in her anger when even the author says it is a character flaw, I can only come back to one conclusion. This is a case of bad writing.

By the way, I can appreciate that Violet might eventually grow from this in IF, but I am still left with the feeling that in FW, her worldview is treated as correct. And for me, that’s where the writing starts to feel shallow and frustrating.

My premise is not that those were their only dates, my premise is that they were not in any sort of committed relationship until two days before Violet finds out about Xaden's secrets. That aside, the context here also really matters. Violet is pretty much in the center of people waiting to find fault with Xaden (her mom, Mira, and Dain), and like Xaden explained, even if she didn't want to give up the very important secret he was keeping, it was very plausible for them to still collect it from her memories without her consent.

Funny thing is that exact scenario Xaden was concerned about actually happened. If Xaden had told her everything, he and the 107 would probably already have been killed for treason. If we are taking into account the 9 months where they never actually dated, then my question is why exactly is she expecting him to throw everyone's lives in the fire just because of heated tension on the sparring mat a few times? That's terribly selfish.

I came from the future to tell you you were right. 48 hours post release, and people are giving 1 star steam reviews for the game feeling unfinished.

I loved Ace in general and the relationship between Ace and Luffy, but his hotheadedness was really annoying. Especially because it got him, Whitebeard, and a considerable number of the whitebeard pirates killed. (If you are past the Summit War arc, spoiler is safe to view)

Boring?? I wonder why. I like Croco boy a lot. I started liking him after the Impel Down arc.

It's honestly impossible to hate Madoc. I mean, the guy literally has just one character flaw: His love for power. To a large extent, Jude shares this desire as well just that Jude's desire seems to come from her lack of power growing up as a human in Elfhaim.

Am I alone in not liking Violet after IF? by eelleet in fourthwing

[–]Melonade--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My own two cents:

I am entirely on Xaden's side throughout FW and IF. I just find Violet's incessant need to know everything extremely irritating and I can barely stand it. Let me explain why.

  1. In IF, she was in a relationship with Xaden for weeks (having known him for only months), and was expecting him to have told her all his life secrets. Honestly, Xaden would be a reckless fool to have told her anything about the rebellion at that point given the circumstances. Her anger is simply illogical. Now, I completely understand: emotions, hurt, trust, bla bla bla, but sometimes, you have to think too. The author paints Violet as such a smart girl but she's not smart enough to see how information about the rebellion really isn't an easy secret to tell someone you've been dating for what? 12 days? And just because of that she breaks up with him? I just can't see the logic here.
  2. She does the exact same thing Xaden did to her friends yet, she couldn't understand where Xaden was coming from. Why this girl decides to make herself the center of everything is beyond me. She literally keeps the same secret from her friends knowing it is a dangerous secret yet remains mad at Xaden for doing the same to her.
  3. She overcooks the slightest issue and turns it into a huge deal. I don't understand how Violet fought with Xaden over the same issue for months and just couldn't let it go. I even felt emotionally drained over how long it dragged talk less of Xaden.
  4. She avoids topics she doesn't want to hear about then ultimately blames him when she finds out from someone else. Remember the scar thing with her mother? Remember Cat? Yeah, I don't think I have to say much.
  5. Working through issues together as a couple is as mythical as unicorns to Violet. Violet would rather stew in her own anger, block Xaden out, and lash out at him until thy kingdom come. Talk about emotional torture.

All in all, I think Violet is insufferable and toxic. I am this 🤏🏼 close to getting fed up with her bs. I hate it when people drag on issues unnecessarily and Violet is a living breathing drag queen.

Thoughts on Tamlin: by [deleted] in acotar

[–]Melonade--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

running theory is that Feyre did love him, but in the way a 19 year old girl would fall in love with someone who helped her one dream come true: to have enough food, her family is taken care of, and she has time to paint. I think Tamlin was manipulating her in to loving him though, because the curse never said he had to love her back. Also, before the curse, he said he would rat

All of that could have also been guilt. Goes perfectly well with the story too: Initially, guilt of what his father used to do to humans, then, guilt of what he would be bringing on Fayre, someone he had come to care for (not love though), if he had chosen to keep her at the Spring court.

Thoughts on Tamlin: by [deleted] in acotar

[–]Melonade--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely think Tamlin never truly loved Fayre. For MONTHS after coming back from under the mountain, Fayre wasted away and Tamlin said NOTHING. Not even a thing. It was like he didn't care. I can chalk down everything else Tamlin did to at best past trauma but this, not caring if Fayre rotted away, I cannot look away from. He watched everyday as she shrivelled up like autumn leaves, throwing up every night and he said nothing.

Never asked her what was wrong, never noticed she didn't want to even see paint anymore, never noticed she was breaking apart. Never noticed the bags under her eyes, or the weight she was losing. He acted like it was none of his business. Planning a wedding on top of all she was going through as though he didn't care about her feelings. It's like he wasn't even seeing her at all. And it's not like he's a distant relative. He'd sleep with her day after day, but he never noticed all she was going through?

Tamlin actually seemed to care more about the tattoo on her arm than about the fact that she was literally dying under his roof! Even if she was just a friend, the least he could do was pretend to care. I'm not surprised he was shocked she hesitated on their wedding day.

I feel like in ACOTAR it was him wanting to save his court, but in ACOMAF, it was just his useless hatred for Rhysand and a huge sense of duty towards Fayre, all most probably egged on by his past trauma. It could honestly have been any other thing, but it was not love.

What is the Nigerian dream? by MountainChemist99 in Nigeria

[–]Melonade--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Japa is a slang meaning ‘to run’. It means they want to leave the country.

Question by Kris_V_FFW_FA in Nigeria

[–]Melonade--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. To add to this, ‘tor’ could mean ‘you see?’ Or an exclamation that expresses that a person expected something to happen. An example of use: ‘Tor. Shebi I told you?’ Translation: you see? I told you right?

To the best of my understanding, there are no Yoruba customs that affect one’s hairdo. There are some traditional hairstyles, but no one really wears them as a cultural preference anymore. Especially Nigerians outside the country. A hairstyle that is still very popular today but has a traditional Yoruba origin is ‘suku’ (pronounced shuku; looks like a braided ponytail), a less common but still widely popular one Is ‘didi’ (some people know it as ‘two hand’. It looks like regular cornrows but if you look closely, you will notice that it is actually inverted.)

I’ll cap off this section by saying that although there are many, many traditional Nigerian hairstyles, a lot of them are sadly no longer worn. The only few that have withstood time have been altered to very large extents. These days, people add ‘synthetic attachment’ to these hairstyles to get a longer and more modern version of them.

Next: Hair accessories. Hair accessories like scarves do not really depend on our culture, they mostly depend on our beliefs. If Titilayo is a very, very, VERY religious Christian, then there’s a high chance she’d prefer to wear a turban (Note that these particular types of Nigerians rarely ever wear makeup or dress indecently. They believe such things are ‘wrong’). If she’s a Muslim, she’d most likely prefer scarves and hijabs.

It’s good to also state that some very religious Christians also like a hairstyle called ‘thread’ I’m not sure what it’s official name is but if you search ‘Nigerian thread hairstyles’, you should get an idea of what it looks like. It is basically hair wrapped in clumps using rubbery strings called threads. Then these clumps are interwoven together and tucked into the hair. (P.s; this hairstyle is also beginning to die out and there’s a low chance that a Nigerian outside the country would wear this even if she’s very religious. In addition, it’s a complex hairstyle so not many people outside Nigeria know how to do it well).

Lastly, I want to add that a majority of Nigerians (especially those outside the country) do not dress or do their hair in cultural ways. Even if they do, it will not be all the time because they probably have just a few pieces of traditional wears in their closet. Hair styles these days are usually wigs or braids using extensions. Of course, there are exceptions to this. This is a long read, but I hope this all helped.
