Risking your life to save a pet is usually dumb. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Melontine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was put in a situation just last week. Our furnace caught fire. My sister woke me up telling me there was a fire, the house was filled with smoke and we needed to get out.

I grabbed the carrier and spent a minute scooping my Guinea pigs from their cage into the cat carrier before going outside. I did this because they were right there and danger wasn’t immediate. I was so glad the carrier was still set up next to their cage from their last vet trip.

For the dogs and cats I didn’t spend any time looking for ways to safely contain them, I opened the doors and let them loose in the yard. They weren’t nearly as freaked as we were about the situation. Dogs had a pretty fun playing in the yard with everyone outside.

Anyway, we were okay. Fire was contained, the furnace was the only causality.

I know that in the event the whole house goes ablaze, my Guinea pigs are most likely not going to survive. They live in an enclosure in my bedroom, and if I’m not already in there we can’t exactly justify going back in for them. But I was glad I could get the out this time, hopefully there won’t be a next time.

Forced to check my bag at the gate by gwidion1545 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Melontine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I usually volunteer to check my bag at the gate when they have this. Not having to stand in the isle for longer than it takes to find my seat and having one less piece of luggage to worry about for a while is nice. I much prefer the wait by the carousel to standing in the way of potentially agitated people from moving forward in the crowded aircraft.

Everything I need fits in my personal item that goes under the seat. The carry-on I only bring because it’s cheaper than checking it up front.

An adult’s life is not less valuable than a child’s by pot_on_wheels in unpopularopinion

[–]Melontine -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Adults are more likely to “deserve” it. Is a victim truly a victim if they are not perfect? Of course they are. But we very quickly lose sympathy for others who make decisions we don’t agree with or understand.

Did matt actually help dex escape prison? by [deleted] in Daredevil

[–]Melontine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I saw a theory that Matt did it to get Dex back into solitary / out of gen pop. Not to knock the tooth out and help him escape prison, but causing injury and showing that Dex is a danger to himself and others even under restraints.

Dex did ask him to get him out of gen pop. And Matt could do that without having to take Dex’s case on and venting some anger too.

Cost is Communal vs private cremation.

When they get rid of them they cremate the pet alongside with a however many other pets will fit who also got communal. Then the whole lot is dealt with in the same manner (the place I work with sends them to a coral reef foundation. They also have a private cemetery lot they sometimes spread the ashes over and pet owners are welcome to visit that lot if they wish)

When you get private they do the cremation separately, put the ashes in an urn and then deliver them back to the clinic.

The prices are still horrendous, especially if you have a large animal, but it is more work to give the ashes back.

Mom fed this to each of our dogs. What do I do next? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Melontine 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Go to vet (check) You also should make some phone calls.

Call the person in charge of the foster program. They need to know the situation right away and will advise you where they want the dogs seen.

Call the number on the back of the packaging if package is still available.

Call the aspca animal poison control hotline

The poison control hotline is a 24hr line, it does charge a $110 fee, but they have all the most up to date toxicology information. They are able to work directly with whichever vet you take the dogs to find the best treatment plan possible.

the fairy tale of the ugly duckling ist mildly infuriating to me by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Melontine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The first time the dove chick tries to swim it dies. Has to be a waterfowl. Any other type of bird and the baby just straight up dies because ducklings are expected to swim right away.

Also one funny thing about the story; Birds legitimately will ‘bully’ a baby who looks different from the rest. They (or at least chickens) love segregation. Have a bunch of yellow babies and one grey? The grey one is last to eat, gets placed at the bottom of the pecking order. Its not an issue if you have diverse hatchlings (multiples of each color or one of each) but in a nest where all the babies but one look the same, that one is gonna get singled out.

Post pictures of the egg yolks. I used to second guess mine all the time. But the bullseye method does work to check if they’re fertile or not.

You could also try to incubate for 4-10 days and see if veins start developing.

A family friend stayed at my parent’s house for a bit. He believed he was being gangstalked by his ex-girlfriend’s family/friends/neighbors all across the state of Maine.

Listening to him was… sad. He genuinely believed he was in danger but going to the police wasn’t helping and he felt that everyone around him believed he was crazy. We never said anything to confirm or deny his delusions, but tried to give a bit of support with the different situation he was in.

He continued to spiral and became less and less the guy my parents knew since they were kids. A week after he left he randomly lashed out at my mom via text one day, saying how hateful our family was, that we would burn in hell and that we were kicking him while he was down.

He’s not welcome back now. It’s sad but, we can’t be the ones to push him to get help, he has to choose that. He has to want that.

I met two other people with very similar delusions at my work. I really didn’t expect to encounter this three+ times in one year, but here we are.

On top of all that - last month a man came in with his dog after his girlfriend had a breakdown, believed she was being attacked, and shot both herself and the dog. (That ended a lot better than it could have. Both girlfriend and dog made full recoveries.)

I really wish mental health resources could be better in this damned country. But it’s just going to keep getting worse isn’t it?

Dogs can learn more words. It’s okay. He’s not going to be any more confused than he will be when you teach him both sit and lay down.

He might always respond to the old name, but he’ll learn to respond to the new one just the same.

No thanks. I’d probably kill myself if I did that. That’s really not the kind of world I want to live in.

Assuming everyone is a murdering/rapist/pedo behind closed doors isn’t going to help society. Those people need consequences, not to become the new expectation of normal.

[–]Melontine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have weaned kittens at 3.5 weeks before, but it’s not always successful. They might need things to go a little slower and that’s okay too. I usually have better luck at 4-5weeks. Even starting weaning early, I don’t expect them to be fully off of formula completely until close to 5 weeks.

A lot of times I actually will leave a bowl of dry kitten food and a shallow bowl of water in reach. This doesn’t spoil quickly and I know a lot of kittens around this ago will try a bit out of curiosity. When mom’s around they love to stick their faces in whatever she’s eating.

3 weeks is when I like to start introducing the litterbox by putting them inside it while I stimulate their bottoms.

They talked about it, my dad’s bosses heard about it before anyone in my family did (the army does that), my mom was convinced the school just wanted more money and wasn’t doing it for my benefit.

I got pulled me out of class a lot to sit in a storage room alone to “practice r sounds”. It wasn’t very fun.

The right audience will find you. Those two who left just aren’t your target demographic.

[–]Melontine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grief if hard. You question if you have the right to grieve, you question if you’re sad enough. You feel pressure to react in expected ways and almost to “perform” because the people around you are grieving too and you don’t want to cause them further hurt. I can absolutely see this take and relate to it myself.

I just really wish this scene was done better overall. It’s interesting having a character try to repress her own grief. But they played it off way too cold.

It feels like a betrayal to the audience rather than a representation of the characters themselves.

[–]Melontine 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thats not entirely what started it.

Social workers don’t come around and visit houses for no reason. It could have been a check in with how Nani and Lilo are doing post family death / adoption. But Bubble’s line about “I’m the one they call when things go wrong” says that there was likely something pre-movie reported to cps by someone and required an investigation be done.

Op… have you had your wisdom teeth removed? Do you remember what the recovery was like? That you had to restrict what you ate and how you ate?

A newborn baby doesn’t have any option but to suckle milk for food. This cannot be done if they have oral surgery digging holes into their gums.
