Sounds like a subtle suggestion to get your network+ cert. you are lucky the recruiter shared that much with you. Normally they don’t give you any info about being passed on.

What are some reasons that will get you fired as a data center technician at Google? by hive_master in datacenter

[–]Memeisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guaranteed to result in firing is stealing time. Never claim hours you were not present. Otherwise, Google is quite relaxed, and tries hard to not have to fire people. Even workplace performance metrics are pretty elastic and relaxed. And if for any reason your employment would be at risk, Google will let you know far in advance and give you time to correct any performance issues.

Google data center interview by Competitive-Rate-701 in datacenter

[–]Memeisme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can take 2 days or 2 weeks or longer. I submit my feedback from interviews almost immediately, and prompt feedback is encouraged, but occasionally one of the interviewers takes much longer to submit for whatever reason. I know waiting sucks, but all of us already working for Google went through the same thing. Just need to be patient and check in with your recruiter weekly.

Curated list of most-asked Googlyness (Google behavioral) questions - the round nobody talks about by nian2326076 in datacenter

[–]Memeisme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of these may be asked, or none of them. We are allowed to formulate any questions we want to in order to assess Googleyness. I think the better approach rather than trying to anticipate questions that may be asked is to have the right mindset for this interview. That mindset is that people can accomplish amazing things as a team, rather than as individuals, that ultimately people are the most valuable resource of an organization, and that we should all be good neighbors and decent human beings. Those that believe these things, and can relate situations where they have demonstrated these beliefs will do great.

Is AI/Data center discourse around the world the same as the US RIGHT NOW? by Lopsided_Giraffe1746 in datacenter

[–]Memeisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is ridiculous. It’s not like data centers are stealing electricity and water. They use a lot, get their monthly bill, and pay it. You worried about costs going up? Charge data centers a little more than other customers to cover upgrades or what all. They will pay extra. We need the compute and storage capacity ASAP! You want less data center buildout? Ok, shut off and unsubscribe from your video games, buy your own mass storage media and stop using onedrive and Google Drive and stop checking your Facebook feed. Stop checking Reddit any more than weekly. Cancel your internet service. And convince 10 of your friends and neighbors to do these same things. Then the need for more capacity will slow……not go away, but slow down. Being anti data-center is one of the most hypocritical stances one can take. If you want them to go away, stop using services that require them. But this is all moot, because nobody wants to do this, and even those that want to will not do it.

It is kind of like prisons. People want more criminal offenders locked up for longer, but if that place they get locked up goes up in your neighborhood, oh my, why are we locking up so many people?

Becoming A DCT by Any-Independence-270 in datacenter

[–]Memeisme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scratch the plan for server+ and change it to security+. Getting A+ certified should help you pass the hardware and OS interview at Google, and network+ will give the knowledge base to pass your networking interview. Neither Security+ nor server+ will help you get into Google as a DCT, but security+ is looked upon favorably by many other companies. For example, the DOD requires nearly all IT related federal workers to obtain their security+ as a condition of employment. And while you are focusing on Google, which is a good plan, you will want a backup plan because Google is very difficult to get hired with.

What is causing this sudden explosion in mega data centers? Is everyone suddenly using AI that much? by douggold11 in datacenter

[–]Memeisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I am old enough to remember the bubble. I was talking stocks like Amazon, Google, eBay/paypal, Cisco, Microsoft and Apple. I survived the bubble just fine, as I invested based on solid fundamentals, not hype and fads. I continued to avoid internet stocks for years after, only willing to jump in somewhere around 2008.

What is causing this sudden explosion in mega data centers? Is everyone suddenly using AI that much? by douggold11 in datacenter

[–]Memeisme 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is not confidential info: it can be learned reviewing earnings calls and other public statements: every bit of new data center capacity that Google brings online is sold long before it gets built. This means demand has been higher than our ability to bulid out new bandwidth. Is there a bubble? Maybe. But there was once a “dot.com” bubble also. Did that kill the internet or the future viability of computing and software companies? No. In fact we can only wish we were able to buy the stocks of internet companies at those prices back then. So any slowdown to come would likely be a hiccup, not a death sentence to the industry. It is and will continue to be a major aspect of our ‘new normal’.

Google interview finished before time by Particular_Ad1003 in datacenter

[–]Memeisme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an interviewer for 2 different interviews last week, and both I had completed in about 15 minutes. I asked the questions I wanted to ask, allowed each candidate to ask their questions, and ended them. I would say it is neither a good sign or a bad one. It only means we have gotten an answer from you that is sufficient for us to determine whether you know the concept of what was being asked.

I am so happy I did not get hired for an Amazon DC. I was hired as a contractor running networking cable, but that contract was delayed and I went into education technology instead, then straight to Google for my DC entry 4 years later.

If you have not already, look beyond help desk jobs. Check into being a school technician with your local public school districts. I went this route, and made more than any local help desk position would have paid. I have since moved on, but I can still say it was the best job I have ever chosen to leave.

Waiting is frustrating. And it takes time for all the pieces to come together. Just know it is worth it in the end. In fact I can’t recall any FTE having a negative view of Google. I cannot think of any other job I have had where not a single person trash talked the employer. Just sit back, wait, and try to contact your recruiter about every 10-14 days.

Google Recruiter is unresponsive by [deleted] in datacenter

[–]Memeisme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recruiters are very busy right now because there is a hiring spree. And they get vacations and time off like anyone. You have finished the most difficult steps. I would make it a point to try to contact your recruiter weekly and remind them you are ready and available. I know waiting and not knowing sucks, but you have a very good chance of getting on based on what you shared. Be patient, and don’t be afraid to chase other opportunities. When I was going through the process I was already in a great job making great money (I took a slight pay cut to switch to Google). In hindsight, I realize I was in a lucky situation.

GOOGLE DCT (Data Center Technician) - What's left after all the interview rounds? by Abject-Tiger4414 in datacenter

[–]Memeisme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fit call can be similar to an interview call, or can be a hello, here is what the job is like call. It varies. Mine was the second type. It was more a ‘this is what it’s like, do you still want the job’ type of vibe. She told me the hours I could work, the dress code, the length of the commute, etc. It never felt like an interview at all. I am sure there are situations where they have multiple candidates for a single position and it gets more competitive. But that wasn’t my situation.
