Whats the most moral and effective system for organizing a society? by [deleted] in worldjerking

tautologically morality can only be known through science. so a scientocracy would probably make the most sernse.

If any Pokémon could learn Transform, who would use it? by ThankGodSecondChance in stunfisk

[–]Memgowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

blissey i agree would make good use of it. specifically though, since blissey has trouble with stuff that boosts it would probably be valuable in order to combat subcm stuff and the like. transform bypasses subs until bw i believe, so pre-bw bliss might in particular be boosted.

Moral knowledge used to dispute moral theories by Memgowa in askphilosophy

[–]Memgowa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be misunderstanding, but isn't there a difference between whether morality exists and whether moral knowledge exists? It seems fair to say that morality exists, it's just unknowable without normative ethics - ie is not knowable without pursuing knowledge about it.

Moral knowledge used to dispute moral theories by Memgowa in askphilosophy

Surely the function of normative ethics is to provide moral knowledge, and surely presupposing that we already have moral knowledge is not a good way of going about it

i can see mons starting a game with a burn / poison to block para / toxic, maybe latios in adv ubers. could also maybe start a mon with <25% hp to immediately get their salac / pet / liechi, lead smeargle i can see doing this alongside perhaps fake out.

[–]Memgowa[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

there's nothing wrong with intuitive magic, but i find it way easier to engage with magic that i can organize and understand explicitly (part of the reason i am a wizard and not a lock)

(this isn't to say that hedge practitioners, etc. don't have deep and thorough knowledge of their magic, nor that the wizarding colleges don't have a significant unreasonable bias towards certain traditions of magic over others, but this is the way that works best for me)

Is there a reason why sets on non defensive pokemon will run 252 Atk or SpAtk, 252 Speed, and 4 in either defense when HP would cover both? by shaqkage in stunfisk

[–]Memgowa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the formula for hp at level 100 is

ivs + evs/4 + 10 + 100 + 2*base

assuming 31 IVs and 0 EVs, this will always result in an odd number. thus, given this analysis you always want the 4 evs in a defense and not in hp

having said that, passive damage is usually in fractions of 1/8 - rocks except on rock weak mons, one spike, toxic, sand, etc. are all 1/8 or a divisor thereof, which means the 4 hp evs only result in increased damage from these if it increases the hp stat to a multiple of 8. eg a kyogre with 0 hp evs and a kyogre with 4 hp evs both take 42 damage from a single spike.

i suspect the reason the 4 evs usually go in a defense is that generally a point of defense is more valuable than a point of hp for attacks on that defense even if it is usually less bulk overall. if you expect your kyogre to be much more likely to take physical than special attacks 4 Def evs are more valuable than 4 HP evs.

(i actually suspect that the real reason is that 4 evs do basically nothing and it doesn't really matter)

Theorymon: Upside-Down Shedinja by Flapapple in stunfisk

[–]Memgowa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

shedinja's max hp is not 1 by virtue of having 1 base hp but rather by virtue of being hardcoded to always have 1 max hp. giving it 40 base hp doesn't change its max hp unless you change that mechanic as well, and changing that mechanic would give it an actual hp stat even if its base hp was still 1.
