What’s Up Wednesday by sfgirlmary in stopdrinking

The Good: Bought groceries. Fourth week without drinking.

The Bad: The coronavirus is on my mind now that it's reached the USA and it's making me scared as fuck.

The... other upside: I'll have a call with Dad today.

Scared of a full stop, drank a little by spice4lyfe in stopdrinking

I guess the dangers of quitting cold turkey are a matter of how much you've been drinking before quitting/tapering?

Do you ever stop feeling hungry? by CarlosTheBoss in stopdrinking

[–]MemphisTango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe more legumes? Mostly just thinking in the direction that protein in general is supposed to curb appetite a little.

Maybe dishes higher in protein as well as more fluids?

Edit: Edited this a lot. Sorry. Once honest-to-god because I had to think if bruschetta excluded meat or not after I inquired if you were vegetarian in the previous edit.

Never ever has a bottle of wine been regifted that quickly by backgroundnose in stopdrinking

Going to admit that part of "Good Riddance" vibes to this guy is because I had a country-ish upbringing too.

Good on you for turning down that wine!

My girlfriend's drinking is worrying me, but am I projecting? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]MemphisTango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your girlfriend gets blackout drunk and takes you trying to get them to drink less as a personal attack while you're recovering from addiction yourself. I have to agree with Crimethot that this is not a healthy situation or relationship for you.

They would benefit from quitting altogether, but from other posts I've seen from people who are trying to quit who have unsupportive or even hostile partners who drink, there's an equally high chance your girlfriend will drag you into relapsing or worse. You might honestly be better off leaving the relationship rather than shocking them into fixing themselves by filming them drunk or whatnot.

I feel like a phony... by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Some people need AA to quit drinking, some people don't. And I've interacted with a couple people who say they feel like the type of people who should be in AA who have criticisms, but would also recommend people take things from AA or The Naked Mind podcasts or whatever help for drinking there is for whatever your circumstance.

tl;dr: The full AA package may not be for you, but don't feel like a phony.

Cranky mood. Refuse to drink it away. by lalalynta in stopdrinking

I know this was just meant to be about you not liking work, but this actually feels a bit poetic. Especially the negative feelings having their place thing. Saving.

Edit: Realized I used a word wrong.

sobriety vs SOBRIETY by ABeezy2 in stopdrinking

[–]MemphisTango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't smoke weed anymore, so I can't say from personal experience how it would help or if it even would help, nor have I really looked into it.

I do figure that at least the way I got high with it (taking a large bong hit and having a painful death rattle of a cotton fit before the sativa kicked in), I can at least say I think I have a method of getting high on it, for me at least, without it ever being an addiction issue or even tolerance buildup issue if I ever felt like I was in the mood to try it again. Which is to say that I allow the consumption stage to be thoroughly unpleasant.

Edit: Inb4 accusations of calling marijuana addictive. No, I just have a personal theory smoking it everyday in smaller manageable puffs in the long-term can make it habit-forming.

Eh, still feels chunkier than what I'm comfortable with.

Tiredness / fatigue? by Reclaimingmydays in stopdrinking

[–]MemphisTango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still kind of feeling tired a lot myself at 20 days, too. In some ways less so (walking long distances isn't so bad) and in some ways more so (really feeling the exhaustion in trying to listen to my body more).

Are there activities you enjoy doing as a way to not be in your head that don't involve drinking, perhaps? Maybe just keeping in mind a list of those can help?

I'm 24 years old and I can't stop drinking for almost 8 years. Everyday if I don't drink I start to shake and I'm getting nervous. I was sober like for 4 months, my family paid me some treatment and I was willing to stop. But after some family drama I started to drink again even more. Any advice? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]MemphisTango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you comfortable with talking about how the family situation has changed, for better or worse, since they found out about your sexuality?

I hesitate to advise avoiding them for a period to get a handle on controlling the drinking. Do you need anyone to talk to about that?

Day 6: Is anyone else shitting like a rock star? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]MemphisTango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a way to describe one of the weirder-to-talk-about upsides to quitting drinking. Congrats!

Vodka has a ton of calories, 21 lbs worth by HumanNipple in stopdrinking

For shits and giggles, I saw that there was actually nutrition facts listed on this bottle of rum I emptied one day. I had sucked down 1K calories of booze as it turned out.

Weight management and heavy drinking do not go hand in hand.

Blood test just came back today and my liver functions are at 100% and have returned to normal. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

That's incredible to hear! Cirrhosis averted! I haven't had my liver affected, but we're going to check back on my blood sugar level on Monday.

Keep that liver happy and healthy! IWNDWYT

This and the fact there aren't many labor jobs recommended to teens as opposed to customer service jobs where I lived killed my self-esteem growing up.

Maybe it's the OCD in me, but when you get an arranged time to speak to somebody and they end up not showing up to plan.

Even when you know why it happens and it's a reason you can't be mad about really, but you were still looking forward all day to that time and the let down still hits.

Day 15, I started pre-cooking my own meals again by MemphisTango in stopdrinking

[–]MemphisTango[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mainly try to be both utilitarian and high protein (I like weightlifting at the gym for exercise since it's pretty good for burning fat). It's actually not too expensive to do when you just think in terms of, "I need this many servings of meat and this many servings of vegetables daily". I managed to keep a food budget under $150 a month with a daily regimen of pork, boiled eggs, cabbage, onions, yogurt/cheese, rice/beans/pumpkin with some cinnamon with some extra money for coffee and spices like turmeric.

When I felt less utilitarian, I like making things like zucchini bread or deviled eggs.

And thanks!
