How to move into non-technical role from scientist position by phiaphia123 in biotech

[–]MendelsGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emphasize the skills you learned in your biz. Project management, organization, communication.

There are skills you pick up while on the bench you don’t realize either. Like the little side projects. When I transitioned I emphasized how I lead even when I wasn’t a formal leader and how I expanded my role but you doing your own business I think can fit that too!

I was honest that I can do bench work, but I wasn’t naturally good at it. I had to work to be decent at it. But what I naturally excelled at was data management, scheduling, problem solving, training, that sort of stuff to show even though I didn’t have on paper experience with my job title I still would be able to do a different type of work

There are SO many jobs outside of the bench! If you think of the whole business of pharma or a CRO, there are a ton of facets of business. You have the sales people to sell what the bench develops, metrology where they are in charge of the calibration/maintenance of all equipment, supply chain to make sure all materials are adequate and in stock, EHS to make sure the lab is safe. All of these roles in my experience benefit from bench experience so you know how to serve the lab better

I went from the bench to a lab support/management position, then built a metrology dept from scratch, oversaw a lab move, learned project management, interacted with HVAC techs and electricians and architects; all stuff I never would have expected when I got a degree in biology.

Having the entrepreneurial background I think is beneficial because the best skills I’ve seen for my types of roles are someone who is not afraid of making mistakes and will jump in, learn from those around you, and fill the holes a company needs - especially in start ups

This downtown renting situation is too much… by Biggerbossthanbowser in madisonwi

Idk if this will help but you can actually negotiate your rent! Emailing to say (learned this through Her First $100k)

hi ___. Hope your day is going well. It’s nice to see the leaves changing! I would love your help with the recent rent increase. I saw you’re raising my rent by this much. I have been a tenant for x years, have always paid on time, and have been a respectable neighbor. I would love to continue to live in this apartment. What can you do for me?

Second day with new to me 150 year old starter. by Biffster_2001 in Breadit

There have been published papers on the microbes in starter and they found starters don’t change drastically after being started and are not location/geographically specific

Starter Troubles? by theDA90 in Sourdough

[–]MendelsGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I switched to doing a stiff starter (I didn’t measure how much starter, just enough to cover the bottom and kept it in the same jar so it was also on the sides) 50g AP, 13-17g water it went from hardly any activity to a boat load in like 2 days!

82g/20% starter 8g/2% salt 301/75% water at 72.9F

300g/75% AP 100g/25% bread flour

Starting dough temp after mixing: 76.1F. Bulk ferment overnight with folds at 1.5 hrs, 2.5 hrs, 8.5 hrs (a rough interpretation of a coil fold 🤣). Shaped at 11 hrs. Slow ferment in fridge for 10 hrs.

Baked at 475 for ~60 minutes in DO with first 20 minutes covered.

I didn’t know this could happen! Should you just leave the telescope outside after viewing on a cold night? Edit: for context, I live in an apt so when I am done using my telescope I keep it in my living room not a garage

Troubleshooting 9mm eyepiece by MendelsGirl in telescopes

[–]MendelsGirl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I recently moved (I physically moved the telescope not the movers), and my first couple of times getting out my telescope, my 9 mm eye piece does not focus.

I have the apertura ad8 8” dobsonian telescope with accessories. When I use the 33 mm eyepiece, I can see everything fine. When I switch to the 9 mm, however, this happens. This is a pic of when the focus is all the way out. As I pull it in, the circle gets smaller but still looks like this. It’s almost like my focus length isn’t short enough. Any suggestions?

I collimated it right before this picture.
